Town Creek Indian Mound: A Native American Legacy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Coe, Joffre Lanning / Ferguson, Leland G., PUBLISHER: University of North Carolina Press, The temple mound and mortuary at Town Creek, in Montgomery County, is one of the few surviving earthen mounds built by prehistoric Native Americans in North Carolina. It has been recognized as an important archaeological site for almost sixty years and, as a state historic site, has become a popular destination for the public. This book is Joffre Coe's illustrated chronicle of the archaeological research conducted at Town Creek, a project with which Coe has been intimately involved for more than fifty years, since its inception as a WPA program in . Written for visitors as well as for scholars, "Town Creek Indian Mound" provides an overview of the site and the archaeological techniques pioneered there, surveys the history of the excavations, and features more than 200 photographs and maps. The book carefully reconstructs the archaeological record, including plant and animal remains, pottery sherds, stone tools, and clay ornaments. In a concluding interpretive section, Coe reflects on what Town Creek and its artifacts tell us about this prehistoric Native American society. American Indian Languages: The Historical Linguistics of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Campbell, Lyle, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Native American languages are spoken from Siberia to Greenland, and from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego; they include the southernmost language of the world (Yaghan) and some of the northernmost (Eskimoan). Campbell's project is to take stock of what is currently known about the history of Native American languages and in the process examine the state of American Indian historical linguistics, and the success and failure of its various methodologies. There is remarkably little consensus in the field, largely due to the publication of Language in the Americas by Joseph Greenberg. He claimed to trace a historical relation between all American Indian languages of North and South America, implying that most of the Western Hemisphere was settled by a single wave of immigration from Asia. This has caused intense controversy and Campbell, as a leading scholar in the field, intends this volume to be, in part, a response to Greenberg. Finally, Campbell demonstrates that the historical study of Native American languages has always relied on up-to-date methodology and theoretical assumptions and did not, as is often believed, lag behind the European historical linguistic tradition.

Now the Wolf Has Come: The Creek Nation in the Civil War

Now the Wolf Has Come: The Creek Nation in the Civil War

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: White, Christine Schultz / White, Benton R., PUBLISHER: Texas A&M University Press, In the winter of , nine thousand Native Americans in Indian Territory took a chance. Drawing on little else but wits, raw courage, and unshakable faith in the old gods, and their aging leader, Opothleyahola, they made a desperate escape from Confederate troops that were closing in. Seeking to reach the protection of federal forces in Kansas, their dramatic journey, recounted here from a unique Creek/Muskogee perspective, was filled with hazards; their destination, with disillusion and despair. The fleeing tribes suffered on the trek from blizzards, disease, and starvation. Constant harassment and desperate pitched battles with rival bands of the Creek Nation led by the Confederate-allied McIntosh family, adjoining Cherokees under Colonel Stand Waitie, and Texan Confederate sympathizers whittled away the number of survivors. When they finally straggled into Kansas, two thousand were dead or missing. Even then, their trials were not over: Federal "protection" proved to be hollow and harsh. Along with many others, Old Opothleyahola himself died in one of the bleak Federal camps. The complexity of the relationship between Opothleyahola and McIntosh--and the Native American strategies they represented--the passion of the Civil War, and the drama of battles and pursuits fill the pages of this story of an earlier day's refugee plight. Told from the Native American view of the events, never before written, this narrative account relies heavily on Creek oral tradition. Personal interviews with members of the Muskogee Nation have been supplemented with academic research in state, federal, and university archives and in the records of the Museum of the Muskogee Nation in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Not only students of Native American history but also those interested in the Civil War will find this volume invaluable reading.

Quest for Harmony: Native American Spiritual Traditions

Quest for Harmony: Native American Spiritual Traditions

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Young, William A., PUBLISHER: Seven Bridges Press, If there were an "endangered religions list" the spiritual traditions of Native American nations would be on it. Fortunately, as "Quest for Harmony" makes very clear, not only are Native American spiritual traditions still very much alive, they are in the midst of a dramatic revival. The four nations on which this richly descriptive and fascinating book focuses---the Lenape (Delaware), Anm-yunm-wiya (Cherokee), Lakota (Sioux), and Dini (Navajo)---bear witness to the reality of Native American culture and its spiritual renewal and continuity amidst change. Each nation's traditional location and present population, the language, and social organization are described. At least one of the stories of origins of the people is presented. A historical survey of the nation, from the earliest documented times until recent decades is also included. The heart of each presentation is an introduction to the nation's spiritual worldview and rituals, including cosmology, and gods and spirits. Quest for Harmony is intended for anyone seeking a basic understanding of the cultures and spiritual teachings of Native American nations. It is sympathetic and respectful, presenting the views of Native Americans in their own voice wherever possible. Critical issues common to Native Americas such as the Pannational spiritual movements and the environment are also covered.
