American Indian Languages: The Historical Linguistics of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Campbell, Lyle, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Native American languages are spoken from Siberia to Greenland, and from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego; they include the southernmost language of the world (Yaghan) and some of the northernmost (Eskimoan). Campbell's project is to take stock of what is currently known about the history of Native American languages and in the process examine the state of American Indian historical linguistics, and the success and failure of its various methodologies. There is remarkably little consensus in the field, largely due to the publication of Language in the Americas by Joseph Greenberg. He claimed to trace a historical relation between all American Indian languages of North and South America, implying that most of the Western Hemisphere was settled by a single wave of immigration from Asia. This has caused intense controversy and Campbell, as a leading scholar in the field, intends this volume to be, in part, a response to Greenberg. Finally, Campbell demonstrates that the historical study of Native American languages has always relied on up-to-date methodology and theoretical assumptions and did not, as is often believed, lag behind the European historical linguistic tradition.

Hispanic Influence on American English

Hispanic Influence on American English

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Panger, Eva, PUBLISHER: VDM Verlag, Over several years the United States of America have been facing a continuous inflow of Spanish-speaking - Hispanic - immigrants coming first of all from the countries of Latin America. They represent the second largest minority group of the country, furthermore, their language has a significant impact on American English. Even nowadays it seems that this process is still going on. The development of Spanglish, the mixture of English and Spanish languages originate in such historical factors. Therefore, in the first part of the book I tried to approach this phenomenon from historical point of view. On the second hand, I analized the Hispanic influence on the American English dialect taking into consideration the linguistic and literary aspects. Finally, in the last part of the work the reader can investigate how English and Spanish languages interact in cases of language learning process. The analysis should be especially useful for those who intend to be deeply involved in the study and research of the history of American English.

The Last Cannibals: A South American Oral History

The Last Cannibals: A South American Oral History

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Basso, Ellen B., PUBLISHER: University of Texas Press, The Kalapalo are a Carib-speaking group of Brazilian Indians who live in the Alto (Upper) Xingu region around the headwaters of the Xingu River, a tributary of the Amazon. In this major discourse-centered study of their culture, Ellen Basso transcribes and analyzes nine traditional Kalapalo stories to offer important insights into Kalapalo historical knowledge and the performance of historical narratives within their nonliterate society. The stories focus on the biographies of exceptionally powerful warrior bowmen. Basso uses these stories to explore how the Kalapalo remember and understand their history and what specific linguistic, psychological, and ideological materials they employ to construct their narratives. This inquiry represents the first comprehensive study of Amazonian Indian ethnohistory using indigenous oral documents and the first attempt to understand, though indigenous discourse, the emergence of Upper Xingu society. It will be important reading in anthropology, linguistics, and South American studies.

Imagining the Urban: Sanskrit and the City in Early India

Imagining the Urban: Sanskrit and the City in Early India

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kaul, Shonaleeka, PUBLISHER: Seagull Books, In "Imagining the Urban," Shonaleeka Kaul turns to Sanskrit literature to discover the characteristics—both physical and social—of ancient Indian cities. Kaul examines nearly a thousand years of Sanskrit "kāvyas "to see what India’s early historic cities were like as living, lived-in, entities—and discovers that the cities were vibrant and teeming with variety and life.   As much about Sanskrit literature as about urban spaces—insofar as that literature reveals significant aspects of the Indian urban past—" Imagining the Urban" shows that Sanskrit literature is a rich source for historical understanding. Advocating the  kāvyas as an important historical source, Kaul provides a fresh view of the early city, showing distinctive ways of thought and behavior that relate to tradition, morality, and authority.   With its provocative new questions about early Indian cities and ancient Indian texts, this book will be an essential read for scholars of urban history, Sanskrit writings, and South Asian antiquity.

Stressing the Past: Papers on Baltic and Slavic Accentology.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Olander, Thomas / Larsson, Jenny Helena, PUBLISHER: Rodopi, From a synchronic point of view, the various accentuation systems found in the Baltic and Slavic languages differ considerably from each other. We find languages with free accent and languages with fixed accent, languages with and without syllabic tones, and languages with and without a distinction between short and long vowels. Yet despite the apparent diversity in the attested Baltic and Slavic languages, the sources from which these languages have developed - the reconstructed languages referred to as Proto-Baltic and Proto-Slavic respectively - seem to have had very similar accentuation systems. The prehistory and development of the Baltic and Slavic accentuation systems is the main topic of this book, which contains sixteen articles on Baltic and Slavic accentology written by some of the world's leading specialists in this field.

" Themes in Language, Education & Development in Kenya " is a collection of fourteen scholarly articles on aspects of language and its relationship with, society, education and development in Kenya.. The authors follow Morgan Dalphinis remarks that:.".". to speak a language means more than an exercise in the use of a given syntax and morphology, it implies the support of a whole culture and civilization. Moreover, it is in language that people learn, relate to each other as social animals in a material world of production, reproduction, distribution and exchange." " It is not only important to understand specific languages but to also appreciate associated structural linguistics as a means of appreciating the underlying, rich cultural aspects of those languages. In this book, authors capture the richness of language and linguistics aspects of some of Kenyan languages, namely Kiswahili, EkeGusii, Dholuo and Ateso as well as appropriated languages used in Kenya such as English and French. Themes in Language, Education & Development in Kenya discusses aspects of language and its relationship with society, education and development in Kenya. I See a Voice: Deafness, Language and the Senses--A

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ree, Jonathan, PUBLISHER: Metropolitan Books, A groundbreaking study of deafness, by a philosopher who combines the scientific erudition of Oliver Sacks with the historical flair of Simon Schama. There is nothing more personal than the human voice, traditionally considered the expression of the innermost self. But what of those who have no voice of their own and cannot hear the voices of others? In this tour de force of historical narrative, Jonathan Ree tells the astonishing story of the deaf, from the sixteenth century to the present. Ree explores the great debates about deafness between those who believed the deaf should be made to speak and those who advocated non-oral communication. He traces the botched attempts to make language visible, through such exotic methods as picture writing, manual spellings, and vocal photography. And he charts the tortuous progress and final recognition of sign systems as natural languages in their own right.

Here we meet Muniyakka, called "walkie-talkie" because she mutters to herself; Shakun, the dollmaker, an exploited artist who needs to feel that others depend on her; and Jashoda, professional mother to children of the rich, from Mahasveta Devi's acknowledged masterpiece "The Wet Nurse." These stories "are dense with thsoe customs, manners, and objects that usually remain locked within regional languages," wrote Anita Desai in the New York Review of Books. Meena Alexander's thoughtful introduction places the stories and the writers in the context of modern India.
