Saracens and the Making of English Identity

Saracens and the Making of English Identity

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bly, Calkin Siobhain / Bly Calkin, Siobhain / Calkin, Siobhain Bly, PUBLISHER: Routledge, This book explores the ways in which discourses of religious, racial, and national identity blur and engage each other in the medieval West. Specifically, the book studies depictions of Muslims in England during the s and argues that these depictions, although historically inaccurate, served to enhance and advance assertions of English national identity at this time. The book examines Saracen characters in a manuscript renowned for the variety of its texts, and discusses hagiographic legends, elaborations of chronicle entries, and popular romances about Charlemagne, Arthur, and various English knights. In these texts, Saracens engage issues such as the demarcation of communal borders, the place of gender norms and religion in communities' self-definitions, and the roles of violence and history in assertions of group identity. Texts involving Saracens thus serve both to assert an English identity, and to explore the challenges involved in making such an assertion in the early fourteenth century when the English language was regaining its cultural prestige, when the English people were increasingly at odds with their French cousins, and when English, Welsh, and Scottish sovereignty were pressing matters.

Being All Equal: Identity, Difference and Australian

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kapferer, Judith, PUBLISHER: Berg Publishers, - Is there such a thing as an Australian national identity? Or is Australia just a melting pot of different peoples and cultures without a common culture? - What is distinctive and what is universal about everyday life in Australia? In a post-colonial age of globalizing economies, the political quest for national 'identity' is increasingly urgent. This topical book traces the ways in which the Australian state and its people struggle to represent the social and cultural practices of everyday life in an attempt to draw meaning from diverse understandings of pasts, presents and futures. Class, gender and ethnicity are shown to underpin this popular debate, fuelled by shifting interpretations of egalitarianism and individualism. The author -- a prominent Australian sociologist -- investigates how a nation's identity is created through its folk heroes and folk festivals, civic and domestic architecture, education, politics and art. Ned Kelly, Parliament House, the Melbourne Cup and the Adelaide Grand Prix are all interrogated for the light they shed on Australian ideologies and institutions. This book will be fascinating reading for those who seek a deeper understanding of how a national identity can be moulded and redefined.

Reading the Hebrew Bible After the Shoah: Engaging Holocaust

Reading the Hebrew Bible After the Shoah: Engaging Holocaust

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sweeney, Marvin A., PUBLISHER: Fortress Press, Is theology possible after the Shoah? Marvin Sweeney challenges biblical theologians to take that question with utmost seriousness. Sweeney examines often ignored biblical texts where ancient Israel contemplated the problem of apparent divine absence and "divine evil," and finds the perspective of post-Holocaust theology an indispensable interpretive resource. In biblical stories like those of Abraham, Moses, Jeroboam, Manasseh, Josiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Esther, Job, and more, Sweeney finds the recognition "that human beings cannot always depend upon God to act to ensure righteousness in the world." The insistence, common among Holocaust theologians, that human beings must assume their own responsibility for doing justice and righteousness in the world is, Sweeney argues, powerfully present already in the Bible itself. This book is an important contribution to modern biblical theology and to Holocaust theology as well.

The Making of Belize: Globalization in the Margins

The Making of Belize: Globalization in the Margins

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sutherland, Anne, PUBLISHER: Praeger, Globalization theorists predict that the forces of globalization will divide the countries of the world into a few winners and many losers. This book challenges that idea and suggests that the very margins of the global world system--where the construction of local relations and group identities within a deterritorialized, transnational political economy allows for a creative postmodernism--may become the areas of the most creative cultural activity. The difficulties facing those who are globalizing in the margins come from powerful transnational movements such as the environmental movement, the international drug trade, and migrations of people including international tourists. Ironically, instant contact with the rest of the world has created a sense of local identity that transcends the local and is truly multicultural. Belize is a diverse, multicultural society that is both cosmopolitan and deterritorialized, searching for new forms of collective expression, identity, and imagined possibilities, coming into its own as a nation at a time of increasing awareness of global social realities. Perhaps the rreatest challenge faced by Belizeans is the power of the transnational eco-colonialists who have, with missionary zeal, garnered control of land and resources and placed themselves in positions of political power. The present is an end of history for Belize and the beginning of a new era, one that is peculiarly postmodern, globalized, and creative.

Dreams of Bread and Fire

Dreams of Bread and Fire

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kricorian, Nancy / Dricorian, Nancy, PUBLISHER: Grove Press, Kricorian's second novel is a beautifully etched tale of romance, idealism, and the quest for self-identity by a writer praised for her "admirable economy and grace" (The Baltimore Sun). Poetic and assured, it is the story of a young American woman whose half-Jewish, half-American heritage seems a mere footnote to her own identity until the dark shadows of history propel her into a quest for her long dead father, and a search for the clues of a nearly forgotten genocide. While studying in Paris, Ani Silver receives a letter from her New England boyfriend ending their relationship. Thus begins a series of romantic misadventures, culminating in her reconnection with a childhood friend. Their shared preoccupation with their Armenian heritage provides Ani with a new facet to her own identity--even as she begins to suspect that her friend has a secret--and dangerous--identity. Funny and heartbreaking to its bold and exquisite conclusion. Dreams of Bread and Fire is an irresistible novel of passion, ideals, and the temptations of trying to outrun our origins.

Cultural Theory and Cultural Change

Cultural Theory and Cultural Change

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Featherstone, Mike, PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), Recent years have seen a significant reappraisal of the idea of culture within the social sciences, and a growing integration of theoretical concerns between the social sciences and the humanities. Debates over concepts such as postmodernism and cultural globalization have been symptomatic of a broader interdisciplinary interest in the social context of cultural practice. In this book an international cast of eminent theorists examines a series of key questions on the borders of the cultural and the social. Ranging across a broad canvas, the contributors focus on different elements of cultural theory and cultural process: discourse, lifestyle, the emotions, the intelligentsia, social movements, postmodernism. Linking the chapters is a concern with the central role of European social theory in the current reappraisal of culture, and an assessment of its relation to other international traditions. This book, for an interdisciplinary readership, will serve as an outline of key concerns in cultural theory and an insight into the central insights of Theory, Culture and Society. The book is also published as issue 9.1 of Theory, Culture and Society.
