Social Linguistics and Literacies: Ideology in Discourses

Social Linguistics and Literacies: Ideology in Discourses

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gee, James Paul, PUBLISHER: Taylor & Francis Group, This fully-updated new edition engages with topics such as orality and literacy, the history of literacy, the uses and abuses of literacy in that history, the analysis of language as cultural communication, and social theories of mind and meaning, among many other topics. It represents the most current statement of a widely discussed and used theory about how language functions in society, a theory initially developed in the first edition of the book, and developed in this new edition in tandem with analytic techniques for the study of language and literacy in context, with special reference to cross-cultural issues in communities and schools. Built around a large number of specific examples, this new edition reflects current debates across the world about education and educational reform, the nature of language and communication, and the role of sociocultural diversity in schools and society. One of the core goals of this book, from its first edition on, has been to develop a new and more widely applicable vision of applied linguistics. It will be of interest to researchers, lecturers and students in education, linguistics, or any field that deals with language, especially in social or cultural terms.

Papyrus

Papyrus

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Parkinson, Richard / Quirke, Stephen / Parkinson, R. B., PUBLISHER: University of Texas Press, One of the most outstanding inventions of ancient Egypt was the making of "paper" from the papyrus plant. As early as B.C., sheets and rolls of papyrus provided an ideal surface for writing with reed pen and cakes of carbon black and red ochre pigment. Egyptian scribes were able to record on papyri everyday details such as administrative records, legal documents, and letters of business and personal life. Equally important for our understanding of ancient Egypt, pen and papyrus were used to record literary texts, tales, and moral instructions, as well as compendia of Egyptian knowledge exemplified by the famous Rhind Mathematical Papyrus and the books of treatment, prescriptions, and recitations for healing. Religious hymns and litanies are recorded, as are the great formulae to secure life after death--the Coffin Texts and the Book of the Dead. In this book, Richard Parkinson and Stephen Quirke freshly examine the methods of papyrus-making and its different uses, not only under the Pharaohs, but also other Egyptian civilizations such as the Hellenistic kingdom of the Ptolemies and the colonial rule of the Roman Empire. Papyrus remained the writing material of the Mediterranean world until it was eclipsed by the cloth paper of the Orient in the ninth century A.D., bringing four thousand years of writing tradition to an end. Politics and the Theory of Language in the USSR :

Politics and the Theory of Language in the USSR :

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brandist, Craig / Chown, Katya, PUBLISHER: Anthem Press, 'Politics and the Theory of Language in the USSR ' provides ground-breaking research into the complex interrelations of linguistic theory and politics during the first two decades of the USSR. The work examines how the new Revolutionary regime promoted linguistic research that scrutinised the relationship between language, social structure, national identity and ideological factors as part of an attempt to democratize the public sphere. It also looks at the demise of the sociological paradigm, as the isolation and bureaucratization of the state gradually shifted the focus of research. Through this account, the collection formally acknowledges the achievements of the Soviet linguists of the time, whose innovative approaches to the relationship between language and society predates the emergence of western sociolinguistics by several decades. These articles are the first articles written in English about these linguists, and will introduce an Anglophone audience to a range of materials hitherto unavailable. In addition to providing new articles, the volume also presents the first annotated translation of Ivan Meshchaninov's 'Theses on Japhetidology', thereby providing insight into one of the most controversial strands within Soviet linguistic thought.

Los Angeles Review No. 12

Los Angeles Review No. 12

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: GALE, KATE, Davio, Kelly, PUBLISHER: Red Hen Press, "The Los Angeles Review" started off with a small group of editors in Los Angeles and work mostly by L.A. writers. We've expanded through the years and now the editors are spread throughout California and the Northwest (plus one in Michigan). What unifies the journal is a focus on the writing of the Left Coast, on the way that the writing of the West works outside the framework of the traditional and the academic, pushes back against writing that fits into small spaces, writing that was written for a small group of elite intellectuals. Many of these stories look forward and backward at the same time, at what was and what could have been, at what will be and what could change. Writing in the West continues to evolve and move forward over the edge. It is the writing of desire. My definition of the writing of the West comes from my play, "The Moon Landing is a Hoax." We write about: Sky, clouds, water, hiking, boats, machines, wide open spaces, grasses, mountains, caves, racks of antlers, mustard seed growing, wild orchids, waterfalls, fat people, hairy people, ugly people, dipshits, trailer trash people, truck drivers, soldiers, gypsies, Mexicans, nuclear bombs, test sites, Las Vegas, military bases, guys that work on cars, half wits from Kansas, women with no teeth and curlers in their hair in case they go out later and all of us eating the dark that is America. Flynn Berry's "Surfing," the story of a man, as told by his brother, growing to adulthood, becoming addicted to drugs, going through one rehab stint after another, ends like this: "Here is what I want, out of the many, many things I want. I want to go to Berkeley to our old house in . I want to hang out with my brother when he is four, when he is bright and goofy. His hair is blond and he is three feet tall.... Below us is the wide shining bay, with no trace of the fog he loves to watch come in... I will tell him to be brave. That he will be fine. If I think about it closely enough, maybe it is true. Maybe it is happening right now, in one of the universes, in one of the dimensions that I can't see. He tilts his head, voice excited, telling me about a supernova. There, smell the eucalyptus. Try to imagine it better. Nothing--is unattainable." And that is what the work in LAR wants to believe. That we can push ourselves to the edge of the world and reinvent story, language, what is possible.

Men of Letters, Writing Lives

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Broughton, Trev Lynn, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Trev Lynn Broughton takes an in-depth look at the developments within Victorian auto/biography, and asks what we can learn about the conditions and limits of male literary authority. Providing a feminist analysis of the effects of this literary production on culture, Broughton looks at the increase in professions with a vested interest in the written Life; the speeding up of the Life-and-Letters industry during this period; the institutionalization of Life-writing; and the consequent spread of a network of mainly male practitioners and commentators. This study focuses on two case studies from the period : the theories and achievements of Sir Leslie Stephen and the debate surrounding James Anthony Froude's account of the marriage of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.
