ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gledhill, David / Gledhill, D., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This book provides both a handy reference to the scientific names of plants and a clearly written account of the ways in which the naming of plants has changed with time and why these changes were necessary. It deals with the problems of using common names for plants against the historical background of our increasing discrimination of kinds of plants. It then goes on to consider landmarks in the standardization of both common and 'scientific' names and the development of internationally agreed principles governing the format and use of names in botany, sylviculture, agriculture and horticulture. From the alphabetical list the reader may interpret the scientific names of plants from any part of the world. For this second edition a number of changes and corrections in both parts have been made. The author has attempted to keep the first part acceptable to the amateur gardener by resisting a temptation to make it a definite guide to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Others have done this already and with great clarity. Revision has allowed the inclusion of a brief comment on both synonymous and illegitimate botanical names and reference to recent attempts to accommodate the various traits and interests in the naming and names of cultivated plants.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hilton, Frank, PUBLISHER: Peter Owen Publishers, Charles Baudelaire was a pivotal link between Romanticism and Modernism and had a major influence on modern poetry, but few who have examined his life and work have fully understood the effect of opiate addiction on his personality, or the extent to which it damaged him. In this fascinating, comprehensive biography, Frank Hilton, lecturer at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in England, contends that the drug is at the root of all of Baudelaire's problems, and in particular his chronic inability to apply himself to any prolonged creative work, which constantly tormented him. Unquestionably there is significantly more to Baudelaire than his opium addiction. But a proper awareness of what it did to the poet helps to illuminate those puzzling aspects of his life and behavior that were not previously understood. This work will give those who know little or nothing about the great poet a wide-ranging portrait of a suffering artist, and to those who are familiar with Baudelaire's life and work, it will present him in an unexpected light.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Conard, Edward, PUBLISHER: Portfolio, In the aftermath of the Financial Crisis, many commonly held beliefs have emerged to explain its cause. Conventional wisdom blames Wall Street and the mortgage industry for using low down payments, teaser rates, and other predatory tactics to seduce unsuspecting home owners into assuming mortgages they couldn't afford. It blames average Americans for borrowing recklessly and spending too much. And it blames the tax policies and deregulatory environment of the Reagan and Bush administrations for encouraging reckless risk-taking by wealthy individuals and financial institutions. But according to "Unintended Consequences," the conventional wisdom masks the real causes of our economic disruption and puts us at risk of facing a slew of unintended--and potentially dangerous--consequences. "Unintended Consequences" is not a book that takes a couple of insights and expands them into 300 pages; rather, it covers the entire scope of the economy. It's a fascinating and contrarian case for how the economy "really" works, what went wrong over the past decade, and what steps we can take to start growing again. Whether you agree with the book's provocative and counterintuitive conclusions or not, "Unintended Consequences" will reward you with a sophisticated understanding of the contemporary economy, one no other book has yet provided. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hess, G. Alfred, Jr., PUBLISHER: J F Bergin & Garvey, A much-needed examination of the impact on teachers and parents of the effort to improve our schools through restructuring, this book looks at professionalization and parent empowerment programs from the ground level rather than from the large-scale policy level. The editor, active in both policy setting and monitoring implementation, approaches the subject with an overarching view that weaves together a set of diverse case studies that examine some of the most notable efforts in this area of school reform. The first section demonstrates the tremendous difficulties involved in attempting to reshape the culture of public school teaching, noting both institutional resistance to change and the personal resistance of the professionals who are, in theory, being empowered through this approach. The second section details the problems of launching parent empowerment opportunities, in a large urban setting, and a contrasting case examines the choice of enrollment option. Here, too, these studies examine the effectiveness of these programs. The conclusion reflects on the opportunities such innovations provide for researchers and assesses the importance of such research in shaping the innovations themselves through evaluations while they are in process.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cooke, Maeve, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Contemporary critical social theories face the question of how to justify the ideas of the good society that guide their critical analyses. Traditionally, these more or less determinate ideas of the good society were held to be independent of their specific sociocultural context and historical epoch. Today, such a concept of context-transcending validity is not easy to defend; the "linguistic turn" of Western philosophy signals the widespread acceptance of the view that ideas of knowledge and validity are always mediated linguistically and that language is conditioned by history and context. In "Re-Presenting the Good Society," Maeve Cooke addresses the justificatory dilemma facing critical social theories: how to maintain an idea of context-transcending validity without violating anti-authoritarian impulses. In doing so she not only clarifies the issues and positions taken by other theorists--including Richard Rorty, Jurgen Habermas, Axel Honneth, and Judith Butler--but also offers her own original and thought-provoking analysis of context-transcending validity. Because the tension between an anti-authoritarian impulse and a guiding idea of context-transcending validity is today an integral part of critical social theory, Cooke argues that it should be negotiated rather than eliminated. Her proposal for a concept of context-transcending validity has as its central claim that we should conceive of the good society as "re-presented" in particular constitutively inadequate representations of it. These re-presentations are, Cooke argues provocatively, regulative ideas that have an imaginary, fictive character.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Koepke, Hermann / Creeger, Catherine E., PUBLISHER: Steiner Books, This book tells the story of how Suzanne, a young teacher at a Waldorf school, copes with the changes her class is going through at the transition from childhood to adolescence. The problems she and the parents of her students must face are familiar to all parents of teens: drug use, smoking, apathy, rebelliousness, moodiness, to name only a few. We accompany Suzanne in her sincere struggle to help her students as she talks to other faculty members and to help parents and then adapts her teaching to the students' changed needs. Suzanne learns much from an older mentor, whose advice and guidance are based on Rudolf Steiner's spiritual science, and so do we. The anthroposophical perspective gives adolescence a new, more meaningful face. Understanding it as part of our destiny and our development toward individuality will help us guide our young people as they take the first uncertain steps on the road to independence. Hermann Koepke, a Swiss Waldorf teacher of many years experience, is well known in Europe. He is also the author of Encountering the Self: Transformation and Destiny in the Ninth Year.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rutledge, Thom / Oriah Mountain Dreamer, PUBLISHER: HarperOne, Fear takes many forms -- dread, worry, panic, anxiety, self-consciousness, superstition, and negativity -- and manifests itself in many ways -- avoidance, procrastination, judgment, control, agitation, and perfectionism, to name just a few. Fear is our constant companion. It haunts us day and night and prevents us from living to our potential. Whether we are afraid of the dark or of being alone, failure or commitment, public speaking or flying, fear dominates our lives, affecting nearly every decision we make."Embracing Fear" challenges us to confront and move beyond the destructive control of unhealthy fear. Utilizing the acronym F-E-A-R, psychotherapist Thom Rutledge maps out a step-by-step methodology: Face it Explore it Accept it Respond to itInstead of repressing or ignoring the voices of panic and dread, we learn that it is only through facing, exploring, accepting, and responding to fear that we free ourselves from its paralyzing grip. Combining compelling stories from the author's twenty-year practice, examples from his own struggles with addiction and depression, and practical exercises and tools, "Embracing Fear" does not pretend to teach the impossible and eliminate fear, but rather shows us that once we understand it we can live beyond its tyrannical control. This powerful life-transforming guide is for everyone who constantly worries about the "what-ifs," but is ready and willing to triumph over fear's pervasive presence once and for all.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lasch, Pedro / Pedro Lasch / Jennifer a. Gonzalez, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, The provocative three-part project "Black Mirror/Espejo Negro" by the artist Pedro Lasch encompasses a museum installation, photographs of the installation, and this bilingual book, including many of the photos, the artist's statement, and critical commentaries. The project began as an installation commissioned by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University to accompany the exhibition "El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III." In a gallery adjacent to the exhibit of Spanish Golden Age masterpieces, Lasch placed black rectangular mirrors on the walls, each with an image of a Spanish Renaissance painting behind it. Pre-Columbian stone and ceramic figures, chosen by Lasch from the museum's permanent collection of Meso-American art, stood on pedestals facing toward each mirror and away from visitors entering the room. Viewers were drawn into a meditation on colonialism and spectatorship when, on looking into the black mirrors, they saw the pre-Columbian figures, seventeenth and eighteenth-century Spanish priests and conquistadores, themselves, and the contemporary gallery environment. The book "Black Mirror/Espejo Negro" includes full-color reproductions of thirty-nine photographs of the installation, as well as the text that Lasch wrote to accompany it. In short essays, scholars reflect on Lasch's work in relation to current debates in art history and visual studies, race discourse, pre-Columbian studies, postcolonial theory, and de-colonial thought. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Holland, Kathleen / Bloome, David / Solsken, Judith, PUBLISHER: Praeger, One of the realities of educational practice in the late 20th century is the increasing role of assessment, especially of children's oral and written language. While there are many issues and problems surrounding this assessment, one problem that needs to be addressed is the lack of alternative ways of assessing children's language and literacy for K-12 practitioners. There are many ways to approach the assessment of language and literacy. How one approaches the assessment of oral and written language depends, in large part, on how language is defined and on what purposes language is viewed as serving. In this book, alternative ways of assessing language are based on three different perspectives defining language and its uses: anthropological, socio-psycholinguistic, and literary. Although applying these perspectives to language is not new, only recently have educators and others taken seriously the need for assessment of language to be consistent with the perspectives of language underlying classroom instruction. Simply put, as language education (including reading, writing, and oral language) becomes increasingly based upon anthropological, socio-psycholinguistic, and literary principles, the assessment of language and literacy must also be based upon such principles. This book discusses and illustrates how to reconceptualize assessment in terms of the alternative perspectives outlined here.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: House, Paul R. / Thornbury, Greg A., PUBLISHER: Crossway Books, Of the many doctrinal challenges facing the church today, the most critical may be opposition to the traditional, biblical view of God and the doctrine of salvation. For centuries Christians agreed that God is sovereign, that He does not change, that He is both kind and all-powerful. Yet in recent decades process theologians have regularly depicted God as a constantly evolving deity, and postmodernists have defined Him in diverse, even contradictory ways. A number of scholars--some with evangelical roots or affiliations--have even gone so far as to claim that salvation may come through other religions and not exclusively through a conscious personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Given these internal and external challenges, evangelical Christianity must reassert the inerrant, biblical definition of God and the doctrine of salvation, and do so in a way that is convincing in our postmodern setting. That is the goal of Who Will Be Saved? Some of the most significant figures in evangelical theology--including Carl F.H. Henry, D. A. Carson, and R. Albert Mohler--explore the traditional view of salvation through a contemporary lens, beginning with the doctrine of God as the author of salvation. They then move on to the pressing matters confronting Christians today--the exclusivity of Christianity, the work of the church, our evangelism strategies--that are driven by one's conclusions about the doctrine of God. The biblical response to inclusivist perspectives presented here will empower Christians to faithfully and convincingly continue declaring the gospel message in these postmodern times.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ferguson, Kitty, PUBLISHER: Walker & Company, More than years ago, Eratosthenes, in Alexandria, used a stick, a hole in the ground, sunllght at summer solstice, and elementary geometry to measure the circumference of the Earth with surprising accuracy, long before anyone was able to circumnavigate it. Today, scientists are attempting to measure the entire universe and to determine its origin. Although the methods have changed, the quest to chart the horizons of space and time continues to be one of the great adventures of science. "Measuring the Universe" is an eloquent chronicle of the men and women- from Aristarchus to Cassini, Sir Isaac Newton to Henrietta Leavitt and Stephen Hawking-who have gradually unlocked the mysteries of "how far" and in so doing have changed our ideas about the size and nature of the universe and our place in it. Kitty Ferguson reveals their methods to have been as inventive as their results were-and are-eye-opening. Advances such as Copernicus's revolutionary insights about the arrangement of the solar system, William Herschel's meticulous creation of the first three-dimensional map of the universe, and Edwin Hubble's astonishing discovery that the universe is expanding have by turns revolutionized our concept of the universe. Connecting centuries of breakthroughs with the political and cultural events surrounding them, Ferguson makes astronomy part of the sweep of history. To measure the seemingly immeasurable, scientists have always pushed the boundaries of the imagination-today, for example, facing the paradox of an ever-expanding universe that doesn't appear to expand "into" anything. In Kitty Fergeson's skillfill hands, the unimaginable becomes accessible and the splendid quest something we all can share.
