When I was a child, my family rented a cabin in rural upstate New York, and down the road lived a family of local pariahs. Tales of their alleged misdeeds ranged from petit larceny to incest to murder, turning them into a band of provincial monsters. And, as if to cinch the case against them, all the daughters in the family had fingernails that were black and twisted, as though corruption sprouted directly from their fingertips. They kept to themselves, the girls bearing a disturbing shell-shocked look in their pale eyes, until they all simply picked up and left one day without a word, providing the town with yet more fodder for gossip. Only later, when I wrote about thefictional Mayborns, a much fiercer version of this real-life family, did I wonder about their aura of impending doom. Had they simply become trapped within the town's collective fiction of them, or were they truly a monstrous second cousin to the average human? For me, my first novel, The Average Human, will always be associated with schlepping bowls of pad thai, since I wrote the bulk of it while I waitressed in a Thai restaurant. Another waitress at the restaurant was also writing a novel, and together we made a pact to exchange at least two pages of writing every day. We kept the storylines and the characters alive by speculating about them endlessly, in between hauling plates of curried chicken or while we were polishing silverware. I'm sure we annoyed the hell out of the rest of the wait staff, but we finished our novels within months of each other. And we were each other's constant reminder that we were writers, not waitresses, despite the peanut sauce stains on our shirtsleeves. The Average Human is vivid, flawlessly written, and perfectly constructed. It's easy to remember whole passages at a time, because they instantly take root in your imagination. Ellen is the type of writer that readers will clamor for more of as soon as they finish this book.--P.W.

Ghosts awaited him atop Germany's highest peak. He'd avoided this rendezvous for nearly four decades. People like him, who buried their past so determinedly, should not help it from the grave so easily. Yet here he was, doing exactly that. Vibrations slowed as the car entered, then stopped at the summit station. Skiers flooded off toward another lift that would take them down to a high- altitude corrie, where a chalet and slopes waited. He didn't ski, never had, never wanted to. He made his way through the visitor center, identified by a yellow placard as MYncher Haus. A restaurant dominated one half of the building, the rest housed a theater, a snack bar, an observatory, souvenir shops, and a weather station. He pushed through thick glass doors and stepped out onto a railed terrace. Bracing Alpine air stung his lips. According to Stephanie Nelle his contact should be waiting on the observation deck. One thing was obvious. Ten thousand feet in the high Alps certainly added a height-ened measure of privacy to their meeting. The Zugspitze lay on the border. A succession of snowy crags rose south toward Austria. To the north spanned a soup- bowl valley ringed by rock- ribbed peaks. A gauze of frosty mist shielded the German vil-lage of Garmisch and its companion, Partenkirchen. Both were sports meccas, and the region catered not only to skiing but also bobsledding, skating, and curling. More sports he'd avoided. Vendo bellissima bici pieghevole Dahon Cadenza XL Alfine, unica nel suo genere. Ha ruote grandi ammortizzate, le famose big Apple da 26 pollici e una volta aperta ha un telaio perfettamente rigido come una bici non pieghevole. Ha un meccanismo di piega esclusivo dahon veloce ma robustissimo. Pesa come una bici analoga con ruote da 20, in quanto le ruote grandi permettono di avere un telaio di dimensioni minori. Rispetto a una bici da 20 ha lâ€(TM)unico neo che da piegata occupa più posto, ma in sella non è assolutamente paragonabile. Lo stesso telaio è riproposto da dahon anche nel ma non con componenti di pari livello: questa versione dispone di cambio interno Alfine 8v, freni a disco. Il prezzo attuale è di euro! La bici è veramente perfetta, senza graffi, usata pochissimo e completa di tutto. Sul manubrio è possibile montare un attacco clickfix con relativa borsa, senza intralciare la chiusura e la marcia.
