Sense and Sensitivity: How Focus Determines Meaning

Sense and Sensitivity: How Focus Determines Meaning

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Beaver, David / Clark, Brady, PUBLISHER: Wiley-Blackwell, "Sense and Sensitivity" advances a novel research proposal in the nascent field of formal pragmatics, exploring in detail the semantics and pragmatics of focus in natural language discourse. The authors develop a new account of focus sensitivity, and show that what has hitherto been regarded as a uniform phenomenon in fact results from three different mechanisms. The book Makes a major contribution to ongoing research in the area of focus sensitivity - a field exploring interactions between sound and meaning, specifically the dependency some words have on the effects of focus, such as "she only LIKES me" (i.e. nothing deeper) compared to "she only likes ME" (i.e. nobody else) Discusses the features of the QFC theory (Quasi association, Free association, and Conventional association), a new account of focus implying a tripartite typology of focus-sensitive expressions Presents novel cross-linguistic data on focus and focus sensitivity that will be relevant across a range of linguistic sub-fields: semantics and pragmatics, syntax, and intonational phonology Concludes with a case study of exclusives (like "only"), arguing that the entire existing literature has missed crucial generalizations, and for the first time explaining the focus sensitivity of these expressions in terms of their meaning and discourse function

Cataclysms and Earth History: The Development of Diluvialism

Cataclysms and Earth History: The Development of Diluvialism

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Huggett, Richard John, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, This book explores the development of ideas about enormous floods, both gradual and catastrophic, and the role of floods in fashioning the Earth's surface. Floods of immense size are recorded in ancient myths and classical writings. Renaissance scholars believed that sea shells found on mountains were relics of Noah's Flood, and natural philosophers during the Restoration and Enlightenment proposed elaborate theories of the Earth which accounted for a universal Deluge. During the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, field evidence suggested that there had been several grand cataclysms during the course of Earth's history, the most recent of which was identified with the Noachian Cataclysm. In the nineteenth century too, a gradual inundation of continents was proposed, an idea which was taken up by proponents of marine regression and transgression cycles. During the present century the notion of marine transgression has been refined. Recently, the possibility of catastrophic flooding has again been raised. The author traces the developments of each of these theories and provides a comprehensive bibliography of the exploration of these ideas through the centuries.

Black Light: Myth and Meaning in Modern Painting

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gooding, Francis, PUBLISHER: Wiley-Blackwell, Painters have always drawn on the classics to find myths and symbols which will answer to contemporary problems. In "Black Light," Francis Gooding examines four modern paintings in the light of ancient themes, and illuminates the permanence and power of the mythic imagination. Opening a new dialogue between modern and ancient, "Black Light" explores living myth in modern paintings Examines four paintings from the Modern tradition in the light of episodes from antique mythology As the myths illuminate the paintings, and paintings throw light on the myths, Gooding shows that themes from ancient sources can be seen to resonate in modern representations Traces unexpected thematic correspondences across two millennia of literature and art, and finds that wherever meaning is sought through interpretation, myth becomes an indispensable tool of analysis In the work of classical authors such as Sophocles and Ovid, Gooding finds mythic elements which are also present in paintings by Manet, Matisse, Richards and Warhol
