Silent Covenants: Brown V. Board of Education and the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bell, Derrick, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, When the landmark Supreme Court case of Brown vs. Board of Education was handed down in , many civil rights advocates believed that the decision, which declared public school segregation unconstitutional, would become the Holy Grail of racial justice. Fifty years later, despite its legal irrelevance and the racially separate and educationally ineffective state of public schooling for most black children, Brown is still viewed by many as the perfect precedent. Here, Derrick Bell shatters the shining image of this celebrated ruling. He notes that, despite the onerous burdens of segregation, many black schools functioned well and racial bigotry had not rendered blacks a damaged race. He maintains that, given what we now know about the pervasive nature of racism, the Court should have determined instead to rigorously enforce the "equal" component of the "separate but equal" standard. Racial policy, Bell maintains, is made through silent covenants--unspoken convergences of interest and involuntary sacrifices of rights--that ensure that policies conform to priorities set by policy-makers. Blacks and whites are the fortuitous winners or losers in these unspoken agreements. The experience with Brown, Bell urges, should teach us that meaningful progress in the quest for racial justice requires more than the assertion of harms. Strategies must recognize and utilize the interest-convergence factors that strongly influence racial policy decisions. In Silent Covenants, Bell condenses more than four decades of thought and action into a powerful and eye-opening book.

Peerless Educator: The Life and Work of Isaac Leon Kandel

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Null, J. Wesley / Ravitch, Diane, PUBLISHER: Lang, Peter, Publishing Inc., Isaac Leon Kandel () was a major figure in educational philosophy and comparative education in the twentieth century. As a professor of education at Columbia University's Teachers College, Kandel almost single-handedly developed the field of comparative education, and was an early critic of Progressive educational philosophy. As the definitive biography of one of the twentieth century's most brilliant writers on education, this book presents Kandel as a democratic traditionalist who tirelessly advocated the ideal of liberal education for all. This book tells the story of Kandel's life and the many obstacles that he faced because of his faith and political views. The philosophy of democratic schooling that Kandel embodies is crucial to the reconstruction of American education today. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Meyer, Kirsten, PUBLISHER: Walter de Gruyter, Education, knowledge, equal opportunity, autonomy and a good life. These are the keywords shaping current social debate. What does the decree of equal opportunity mean? In ancient philosophy, an interest in education grew out of the core question of human happiness and a good life. By reviving that connection this book returns education to the philosophical agenda.

Climate Change Education: Goals, Audiences, and Strategies:

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Forrest, Sherrie / Feder, Michael A., PUBLISHER: National Academies Press, The global scientific and policy community now unequivocally accepts that human activities cause global climate change. Although information on climate change is readily available, the nation still seems unprepared or unwilling to respond effectively to climate change, due partly to a general lack of public understanding of climate change issues and opportunities for effective responses. The reality of global climate change lends increasing urgency to the need for effective education on earth system science, as well as on the human and behavioral dimensions of climate change, from broad societal action to smart energy choices at the household level. The public's limited understanding of climate change is partly the result of four critical challenges that have slowed development and delivery of effective climate change education. As one response to these challenges, Congress, in its and appropriation process, requested that the National Science Foundation (NSF) create a program in climate change education to provide funding to external grantees to improve climate change education in the United States. To support and strengthen these education initiatives, the Board on Science Education of the National Research Council (NRC) created the Climate Change Education Roundtable. The Roundtable convened two workshops. Climate Change Education Goals, Audiences, and Strategies is a summary of the discussions and presentations from the first workshop, held October 21 and . This report focuses on two primary topics: public understanding and decision maker support. It should be viewed as an initial step in examining the research on climate change and applying it in specific policy circumstances.
