Bart Giamatti: A Profile

Bart Giamatti: A Profile

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Moncreiff, Robert P., PUBLISHER: Yale University Press, This vivid portrait of Bart Giamatti encompasses his entire eventful life but focuses especially on his years at Yale University () and his brief career as a major league baseball executive (). As scholar, teacher, and then university president, Giamatti was an admired and respected figure on campus. He forged his academic career during turbulent decades, and his tenure in baseball was no less contentious, for as commissioner of baseball he oversaw the banishment of Cincinnati's Pete Rose from the game for gambling. The book draws on Giamatti's numerous writings and speeches to illuminate the character and complexities of the man and to understand the values that motivated his leadership. Bart Giamatti was a cultural conservative and institutional moderate at a time when such values were out of favor and under attack. At Yale, as a baseball executive, and indeed in all things, Giamatti championed the related values of freedom and order. Robert P. Moncreiff places Giamatti in the context of major events at Yale, recounts in detail the legal context in which the Pete Rose affair unfolded, and arrives at a nuanced understanding of this memorable man's life.

The Hellhound of Wall Street: How Ferdinand Pecora's

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Perino, Michael, PUBLISHER: Penguin Press, A gripping account of the underdog Senate lawyer who unmasked the financial wrongdoing that led to the Crash of and forever changed the relationship between Washington and Wall Street. In "The Hellhound of Wall Street," Michael Perino recounts in riveting detail the hearings that put Wall Street on trial for the Great Crash. Never before in American history had so many financial titans been called to account before the public, and they had come within a few weeks of emerging unscathed. By the time Ferdinand Pecora, a Sicilian immigrant and former New York prosecutor, took over as chief counsel, the investigation had dragged on ineffectively for nearly a year and was universally written off as dead. "The Hellhound of Wall Street" provides a minute-by-minute account of the ten dramatic days when Pecora turned the hearings around, cross- examining the officers of National City Bank (today's Citigroup), particularly its chairman, Charles Mitchell, one of the best known bankers of his day. Mitchell strode into the hearing room in obvious disdain for the proceedings, but he left utterly disgraced. Pecora's rigorous questioning revealed that City Bank was guilty of shocking financial abuses, from selling worthless bonds to manipulating its stock price. Most offensive of all was the excessive compensation and bonuses awarded to its executives for peddling shoddy securities to the American public. Pecora became an unlikely hero to a beleaguered nation. The man whom the press called "the hellhound of Wall Street" was the son of a struggling factory worker. Precocious and determined, he became one of New York's few Italian American lawyers at a time when Italians were frequently stereotyped as anarchic criminals. The image of an immigrant lawyer challenging a blue-blooded Wall Street tycoon was just one more sign that a fundamental shift was taking place in America. By creating the sensational headlines needed to galvanize public opinion for reform, the Pecora hearings spurred Congress to take unprecedented steps to rein in the freewheeling banking industry and led directly to the New Deal's landmark economic reforms. A gripping courtroom drama with remarkable contemporary relevance, "The Hellhound of Wall Street" brings to life a crucial turning point in American financial history.

Re-Presenting the Good Society

Re-Presenting the Good Society

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cooke, Maeve, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Contemporary critical social theories face the question of how to justify the ideas of the good society that guide their critical analyses. Traditionally, these more or less determinate ideas of the good society were held to be independent of their specific sociocultural context and historical epoch. Today, such a concept of context-transcending validity is not easy to defend; the "linguistic turn" of Western philosophy signals the widespread acceptance of the view that ideas of knowledge and validity are always mediated linguistically and that language is conditioned by history and context. In "Re-Presenting the Good Society," Maeve Cooke addresses the justificatory dilemma facing critical social theories: how to maintain an idea of context-transcending validity without violating anti-authoritarian impulses. In doing so she not only clarifies the issues and positions taken by other theorists--including Richard Rorty, Jurgen Habermas, Axel Honneth, and Judith Butler--but also offers her own original and thought-provoking analysis of context-transcending validity. Because the tension between an anti-authoritarian impulse and a guiding idea of context-transcending validity is today an integral part of critical social theory, Cooke argues that it should be negotiated rather than eliminated. Her proposal for a concept of context-transcending validity has as its central claim that we should conceive of the good society as "re-presented" in particular constitutively inadequate representations of it. These re-presentations are, Cooke argues provocatively, regulative ideas that have an imaginary, fictive character.

Garden Spells

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Allen, Sarah Addison, PUBLISHER: Bantam Books, In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.... The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures. A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants--from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys--except for Claire's rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before. When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire's quiet life is turned upside down--along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy--if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom--or with each other. Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own.... "From the Hardcover edition." Acquista Ora

Thomas Lawrence

Thomas Lawrence

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ashton, Geoffrey, PUBLISHER: Chaucer Press, Sir Thomas Lawrence painted some of the best known and loved images of the Regency period, Cherry Ripe, Pinkie and Master William Lambton (The Red Boy) which became some of the most famous images of Victorian and early twentieth century times. However, Lawrence's real genius was to bring to life a huge cross-section of late Georgian and Regency society. These range from the elderly and kindly Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, to the swashbuckling grandees of parliament and church. Lawrence had an uncanny ability to bring society to life, even when he was painting the Archbishop of Canterbury. Today, he is also regarded as the leading portrait painter of the whole of Europe of his time, and is best seen in the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle, where the Pope presides over the allied monarchs of Europe who defeated Napoleon. This beautifully illustrated book contains some of his finest work.
