Furs and Frontiers in the Far North: The Contest Among

Furs and Frontiers in the Far North: The Contest Among

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bockstoce, John R. / Fernandez-Armesto, Felipe, PUBLISHER: Yale University Press, This comprehensive history of the native and maritime fur trade in Alaska during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is without precedent. The Bering Strait formed the nexus of the circumpolar fur trade in which Russians, British, Americans, and members of fifty native nations competed and cooperated. The desire to dominate the fur trade fed the European expansion into the most remote regions of Asia and America and was an agent of massive change in these regions. Award-winning author John R. Bockstoce fills a major gap in the historiography of the area in covering the scientific, commercial, and foreign-relations implications of the northern fur trade. In addition, the book provides rare insight into the relationship between the Western powers and the Native Americans who provided them with fur, ivory, and whalebone in exchange for manufactured goods, tobacco, tea, alcohol, and hundreds of other things. But this is also the story of the enterprising individuals who energized the Alaskan fur trade and, in doing so, forever altered the region's history.

Southern Emancipator: Moncure Conway: The American Years,

Southern Emancipator: Moncure Conway: The American Years,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: D'Entremont, John, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, By his thirty-third birthday, Moncure Conway was a Virginian who had abandoned the South, a minister who had rejected Christianity, an aristocrat who had embraced radical abolitionism and feminism, and one of the first American expatriates. He would live another forty-two years as an important transatlantic writer, reformer, and freethought minister, but in his American years he had already lived a lifetime and made his mark. This study of the antebellum South's most radical upper-class white male, whose life--until now--has eluded capture by historians, illuminates the demands of the antebellum Southern gentry, the nature of the abolitionist movement, the boundaries of 19th-century organized Christianity, and the tragic personal impact of the American Civil War. D'Entremont recounts Conway's dramatic career as social reformer, religious radical, and associate of such luminaries as Emerson, Wendell Phillips, Theodore Parker, Walt Whitman, and William Dean Howells. The book climaxes with the Civil War, which saw Conway, an abolitionist with two brothers in the Confederate army, agonized by his conflicting commitments to emancipation and peace. A brilliant portrayal of one of the most intriguing public figures in American history, Southern Emancipator combines important contributions to Southern history, women's history, and the history of antebellum reform and the American Civil War. A Natural History of Nature Writing

A Natural History of Nature Writing

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Stewart, Frank, PUBLISHER: Island Press, "A Natural History of Nature Writing" is a penetrating overview of the origins and development of a uniquely American literature. Essayist and poet Frank Stewart describes in rich and compelling prose the lives and works of the most prominent American nature writers of the19th and 20th centuries, including: Henry D. Thoreau, the father of American nature writing. John Burroughs, a schoolteacher and failed businessman who found his calling as a writer and elevated the nature essay to a loved and respected literary form. John Muir, founder of Sierra Club, who celebrated the wilderness of the Far West as few before him had. Aldo Leopold, a Forest Service employee and scholar who extended our moral responsibility to include all animals and plants. Rachel Carson, a scientist who raised the consciousness of the nation by revealing the catastrophic effects of human intervention on the Earth's living systems. Edward Abbey, an outspoken activist who charted the boundaries of ecological responsibility and pushed these boundaries to political extremes. Stewart highlights the controversies ignited by the powerful and eloquent prose of these and other writers with their expansive - and often strongly political - points of view. Combining a deeply-felt sense of wonder at the beauty surrounding us with a rare ability to capture and explain the meaning of that beauty, nature writers have had a profound effect on American culture and politics. "A Natural History of Nature Writing" is an insightful examination of an important body of American literature.

Ten Little Indians

Ten Little Indians

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Alexie, Sherman, PUBLISHER: Grove Press, Sherman Alexie is one of our most acclaimed and popular writers today. With Ten Little Indians, he offers nine poignant and emotionally resonant new stories about Native Americans who, like all Americans, find themselves at personal and cultural crossroads, faced with heartrending, tragic, sometimes wondrous moments of being that test their loyalties, their capacities, and their notions of who they are and who they love. In Alexie's first story, "The Search Engine," Corliss is a rugged and resourceful student who finds in books the magic she was denied while growing up poor. In "The Life and Times of Estelle Walks Above," an intellectual feminist Spokane Indian woman saves the lives of dozens of white women all around her to the bewilderment of her only child. "What You Pawn I Will Redeem" starts off with a homeless man recognizing in a pawnshop window the fancy-dance regalia that were stolen fifty years earlier from his late grandmother. Even as they often make us laugh, Alexie's stories are driven by a haunting lyricism and naked candor that cut to the heart of the human experience, shedding brilliant light on what happens when we grow into and out of each other.

The book is structured chronologically, allowing connections to be made between religious and secular history.

A Gentleman of Color: The Life of James Forten

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Winch, Julie, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, In A Gentleman of Color, Julie Winch provides a vividly written, full-length biography of James Forten, one of the most remarkable men in 19th-century America. Forten was born in into a free black family. As a teenager he served in the Revolution and was captured by the British. Rejecting an attractive offer to change sides, he insisted he was a loyal American. By he was the leading sailmaker in Philadelphia, where he became well known as an innovative craftsman, a successful manager of black and white employees, and a shrewd businessman. He emerged as a leader in Philadelphia's black community and was active in a wide range of reform activities. He was especially prominent in national and international antislavery movements, served as vice-president of the American Anti-Slavery Society, and became close friends with William Lloyd Garrison, to whom he lent money to start up the Liberator. Forten was also the founder of a remarkable dynasty. His children and his son-in-law were all active abolitionists and a granddaughter, Charlotte Forten, published a famous diary of her experiences teaching ex-slaves in South Carolina's Sea Islands during the Civil War. When James Forten died in , five thousand mourners, black and white, turned out to honor a man who had earned the respect of society across the racial divide. This is the first serious biography of Forten, who stands beside Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr. in the pantheon of African-Americans who fundamentally shaped American history.
