L'idea era stata concepita a Pantelleria e iniziavano a prendere corpo le cosiddette "Missioni", dal al , che rappresentano il cuore di questo libro: la storia di una vita. I primi vent'anni in Africa; poi gli studi universitari e la professione di chirurgo, instancabile e coraggioso. All'interno sono racchiusi i "diari di bordo" che raccontano le tappe della preparazione del progetto lungo le coste e le isole dell'immenso lago Vittoria: vivide immagini di intense giornate di lavoro, briefing mattutini, interventi chirurgici talvolta molto complessi, visite pomeridiane ai pazienti operati, incontri con infermieri e suore, momenti di didattica.
