"...era il , stava maturando in Gentilini un nuovo e più ambizioso progetto che avrebbe interessato il cuore dell'Africa, quel tratto della Rift Valley nel territorio dei grandi laghi che ha visto l'origine dell'Homo Sapiens. L'idea era stata concepita a Pantelleria e iniziavano a prendere corpo le cosiddette "Missioni", dal al , che rappresentano il cuore di questo libro: la storia di una vita. I primi vent'anni in Africa; poi gli studi universitari e la professione di chirurgo, instancabile e coraggioso. All'interno sono racchiusi i "diari di bordo" che raccontano le tappe della preparazione del progetto lungo le coste e le isole dell'immenso lago Vittoria: vivide immagini di intense giornate di lavoro, briefing mattutini, interventi chirurgici talvolta molto complessi, visite pomeridiane ai pazienti operati, incontri con infermieri e suore, momenti di didattica. Ma anche semplici episodi di vita quotidiana tra la gente. Sono i racconti di uno spirito libero, "Hur", che non rinuncia alla curiosità del viaggiatore. Suggestiva è la descrizione di un'escursione sul lago Tanganica, non priva di rischi. Sull'immenso lago navigherà il catamarano raggiungendo i "popoli dell'acqua", lontani da strutture ospedaliere spesso rese inaccessibili da alluvioni che trasformano le vie di transito in sentieri fangosi e impraticabili. Un ospedale galleggiante che andrà "incontro ai pazienti". Un progetto semplice e ardito che porterà il nome di una "giovane donna meravigliosa": Sister Levina. Nel libro si avvicendano tanti personaggi femminili. Alima, Ester, Lucia. Ma l'immagine di Levina, segnata dalla sua improvvisa scomparsa, risalta tra tutte. E' la donna che ha indicato il percorso che unisce il cuore dell'Africa al Mediterraneo. Un pomeriggio, mentre respiravamo a pieni polmoni il profumo del piccolo bosco sul lago, Levina mi aveva fatto notare come le piante del caffè e delle banane crescono più sane, più saporite e profumate, se piantate vicine: Kukua pamoja.
