ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fuller, Steve, PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, Thomas Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" is one of the best known and most influential books of the twentieth century. Whether they adore or revile him, critics and fans alike have tended to agree on one thing: Kuhn's ideas were revolutionary. But were they? Steve Fuller argues that Kuhn actually held a profoundly conservative view of science and how one ought to study its history. Early on, Kuhn came under the influence of Harvard President James Bryant Conant (to whom "Structure" is dedicated), who had developed an educational program intended to help deflect Cold War unease over science's uncertain future by focusing on its illustrious past. Fuller argues that this rhetoric made its way into "Structure," which Fuller sees as preserving and reinforcing the old view that science really is just a steady accumulation of truths about the world (once "paradigm shifts" are resolved). Fuller suggests that Kuhn, deliberately or not, shared the tendency in Western culture to conceal possible negative effects of new knowledge from the general public. Because it insists on a difference between a history of science for scientists and one suited to historians, Fuller charges that "Structure" created the awkward divide that has led directly to the "Science Wars" and has stifled much innovative research. In conclusion, Fuller offers a way forward that rejects Kuhn's fixation on paradigms in favor of a conception of science as a social movement designed to empower society's traditionally disenfranchised elements. Certain to be controversial, "Thomas Kuhn" must be read by anyone who has adopted, challenged, or otherwise engaged with "The Structure of ScientificRevolutions." "Structure will never look quite the same again after Fuller. In that sense, he has achieved one of the main aims of his ambitious and impressively executed project."--Jon Turney, "Times Higher Education Supplement" "Philosophies like Kuhn's narrow the possible futures of inquiry by politically methodizing and taming them. More republican philosophies will leave the future open. Mr. Fuller has amply succeeded in his program of distinguishing the one from the other."--William R. Everdell, "Washington Times" Acquista Ora

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Meszaros, Istvan, PUBLISHER: Monthly Review Press, IstvAn MeszAros's bold new study analyzes the historical choices facing us at the outset of the new millennium. Drawing on the theoretical arguments of his monumental and widely-acclaimed work, Beyond Capital, MA(c)szAros shows that the economic boom of the s was built not only on the foundation of new, digital technologies but also on a new social and ethical basis. In the global quest for profit, capitalism has abandoned its claims to serve a larger historical cause. Even in the wealthiest capitalist economies, unemployment has become structural and conditions of life have become more onerous for most of the population. The failure of capitalism's historical mission is most evident in the end of the project of "Third World modernization" so essential to the claims of U.S. global power to represent an advance on old-style imperialism. MA(c)szaros develops an illuminating analysis of the roots and tensions of the politics of U.S. global power from the time of Roosevelt's "Open Door" policy to the present. Against this historical background, he examines the dilemmas which will be faced in the making of U.S. foreign policy towards Chinathe largest and most rapidly-expanding national market in the global economy and the newly-emerging rival to U.S. global dominance. MA(c)szAros shows how this process is rooted in the historical logic of contemporary capitalism, and is neither accidental nor temporary. In the process, he gives new meaning and urgency to the alternatives posed by Rosa Luxemburg at the beginning of the 20th century: socialism or barbarism. MA(c)szAros also explores the conditions for the emergence of a radical alternative to capitalism, arguing that a critical re-examination of earlier movements and struggles is an essential task for the emergence of such an alternative. As a sequel to his essay, an extended interview deals with more reflectively with the main categories underlying his analysis and relates it to developments within the broader analysis of modern society.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Pagliarini, Robert, PUBLISHER: St. Martin's Press, This isn't your father's personal finance book. The way we currently save and invest is confusing, frustrating, and quite simply doesn't work. Get ready for a personal finance book that is actually unique. Get ready for financial strategies that you've never seen or heard before. Get ready to transform your financial life in less than a week Robert Pagliarini has taken budgeting, investing, insurance, and retirement planning--subjects that most of us find stressful and overwhelmingly complex--and made it approachable and even manageable through his unsinkable optimism and relentless simplification process. He says, "We're going to take the pie-in-the-sky theories and turn them into bite-size pieces that you can and will be able to implement in your life immediately." THE SIX DAY FINANCIAL MAKEOVER does a lot of things really well, but I'll just tell you about three. First and foremost it actually provides advice--yes, real advice. Not wishy-washy "maybe you should do this" or "it all depends on your situation" nonsense (what Robert calls "financial fog"). Second, it has an action bias. No, not really a bias, more like a mantra. Implement, implement, implement is the theme in every chapter and on every page (there's even a patent-pending free web site at www.sixdayfinancialmakeover.com readers can use to help them take the advice they read and incorporate it into their lives). Three, it is full of brand-new, never seen before financial shortcuts and strategies such as: " " Why your seven year old is a better investor than you are. Kids intuitively understand how to save and invest better than most adults. The trick is focus and creating separate physical accounts for themyriad goals we have. There is no "right" way to invest. What's crucial is that people determine their investment personality - particularly how involved they want to be with investing - and let that be their guide. Disregarding one's investment personality and pursuing an approach that's not compatible with it is a recipe for disaster. Why you shouldn't work for a paycheck. Most of us work to earn a paycheck, right? Well that's the wrong way to think about work. Once we can align our life's vision and deepest goals to our income, we start to see our purpose for waking up each morning entirely differently. Simply put, Anthem Room Correction quickly "corrects" the effects that reflective surfaces such as walls, floors and ceilings have on the sound radiating from a loudspeaker. Removing the effects of these obstacles allows your audio equipment to achieve a more natural sound in any room, as close to the lab standard as possible. On a more complex level, ARC is a proprietary digital signal processing software that works with a specially-engineered calibration microphone and your PC to quickly and easily optimize audio for your unique listening space. Anthem engineers developed the ARC system while researching how to replicate the audio-lab standard of performance in non-lab environments. This groundbreaking research was conducted in conjunction with the National Research Council of Canada, the Canadian government's research and technology organization. Anthem engineers realized that real world listening experiences had little in common with the controlled environment of the audio lab. That's because even the best loudspeakers are affected by room anomalies like furniture. These obstacles cause standing waves, resonances, and reflections that can color the sound you hear. Imagine the sound waves coming from your speakers as ripples on a water surface. That makes it easy for you to understand how the ripples of sound bounce off any obstruction they encounter. You can immediately see the benefit of removing the obstacles. ARC digitally compares a room's acoustic signature to that of the lab standard. It measures the response of each speaker relative to the listening area. Then it uses advanced algorithms to eliminate the negative effects of the obstacles in the room, adjusting response and correcting phase effects. When ARC removes the obstacles, what's left is the lab standard performance. Limitless music. App-controlled convenience. Wireless connectivity.
