ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bartiromo, Maria / Whitney, Catherine, PUBLISHER: Portfolio, A first-person account of the white-knuckle weekend that brought the financial world to its knees and changed Wall Street forever, from America's most famous business reporter. During a single historic weekend (September ) the fate of Lehman Brothers was sealed, Merrill Lynch barely survived, AIG became a ward of the federal government, and the roots of our seemingly strong economy teetered on the edge of collapse. As bankers and government officials scrambled to keep the economy from total collapse, and Americans tried to make sense of it all, top CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo spent the entire weekend taking frantic phone calls from the most powerful players on Wall Street and in Washington. Those CEOs, politicians, and dozens of other sources gave Bartiromo behind-the- scenes details on the crisis and its aftermath, the personalities involved, and the emotions at work during one of the most stressful periods in American economic history. Now she draws on her high-level network to provide an eyewitness account of the biggest events of the financial crisis, including exclusive interviews with former treasury secretary Henry Paulson, former AIG chairman Hank Greenberg, former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain, and former Bear Stearns chairman Ace Greenberg, among many others. Her sources candidly divulged personal and unreported information. For example, during a commercial break on her show, Paulson, who had been explaining the government bailout package, told her, "In six months, you will understand why we did what we did." It wasn't apparent then, but months later it was revealed that the government's secrecy regarding who got the bailout money was intended to hide the shocking financial condition of Citigroup-the largest bank in the world. Writing with both authority and dramatic flair, Bartiromo not only weaves a thrilling and fresh account of the events of that fateful weekend but provides a unique analysis of the crisis and its aftermath She shows how decades of unbridled risk taking led to one of the biggest and most dramatic economic meltdowns in history and tackles the big questions: is any company too big to fail-and if so should it be? Should the government spend taxpayer dollars to bail out companies whose plights are largely the result of their own mismanagement? And finally, what have we learned from this crisis? Will we return to business as usual or has Wall Street really changed?
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Singer, Scott R. / Levine, Mark, PUBLISHER: Portfolio, "None of us knows what the future holds. But once you've learned how to confront and overcome the unexpected, this lack of knowledge will cease to make you anxious. Tomorrow will no longer be something to fear. And believe me, that's a great feeling" As a professional, you want to be ready for anything. You'll spend hours, dars, even years, perfecting your technique, studying the competition and stepping up to challenges in order to make yourself an all-star. But at some point in your life, regardless of what you do or how far up the ladder you've climbed, you will be thrown a curveball-an unexpected challenge that comes at you quickly and without warning. The kind that forces you to rethink, well, everything. Whether it's the loss of a job, a newly assigned responsibility at work, or a global recession that threatens your entire company or industry, an unanticipated charge can knock even the most experienced among us off guard. So if you want to succeed in business-and in life-it's not enough to be the smartest in the room or even the hardest working; you have to be a great curveball hitter. Investment banker Scott R. Singer learned this lesson the hard way. But after a series of career challenges and personal setbacks, he started to develop a new approach to dealing with unforeseen problems by adopting a new attitude toward life. He realized that curveballs are a part of the game and the greatest players know how to knock them out of the park. Singer shares his personal story and insights as well as those of some prominent curveball hitters he interviewed, such as Leslie Moonves of CBS, Alan Schwartz of Bear Stearns, and actor Michael J. Fox. Singer's rules for surviving and thriving when faced with uncertainty include: Step up to the plate: Accept what's happened; don't fight it. Tell others right away, and let them help. Be the batter, not the ball: Don't let your imagination get the best of you. Be a realist, not a pessimist. Keep your eye on the ball: Focus on what you can do instead of worrying about what might happen or what's beyond your control. This fun yet practical book is full of valuable advice and anecdotes that can help anyone avoid striking out at work (or at home) and maybe even turn those surprising challenges into tremendous opportunities. Lord canât you see, Iâm losing all of my courage, Iâm weak, my legs are shaking, and I can barely stand. I know that you see this door in front of me, my precious daughter is resting in peace on the other side. I am just so afraid of seeing what I most want to see, "Lord, Do you think, this time, you could carry me inside?" Then Jesus said, "My child you must have forgotten, for this surely isnât the very first time. Youâve had other troubling times in your life, as I did then, Iâll carry you now, and you will be just fine." I canât tell you this wonât be painful, for it will, there will be things that you wonât want to see. But someday even painful memories become cherished, and theyâll remain "deep, in the heart of you and me." "Did you tell them you would go another time, but that you just couldnât go that day?" Danni, "Did you tell them you were on your way home, and that I was counting the minutes to see you?" "Did you tell them your new life had barely begun, and that you still had so many things to do?" Danni, "Did you tell them, that you really loved "The Lord," and you would gladly go to Heaven someday?" "Did you tell them that we hadnât said our good-byes, and that you just couldnât leave me that way?" Danni, "Did you tell them that your mama wasnât that strong," and that I just couldnât bear losing my child?" The pain that you had suffered, was still on your face, and I wanted so badly to take it away. I needed to wrap my arms around you, and to give you lots of baby kisses. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fletcher, George P., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, At a time when age-old political structures are crumbling, civil strife abounds, and economic uncertainty permeates the air, loyalty offers us security in our relationships with associates, friends, and family. Yet loyalty is a suspect virtue. It is not impartial. It is not blind. It violates the principles of morality that have dominated Western thought for the last two hundred years. Loyalties are also thought to be irrational and contrary to the spirit of Capitalism. In a free market society, we are encouraged to move to the competition when we are not happy. This way of thinking has invaded our personal relationships and undermined our capacities for friendship and loyalty to those who do not serve our immediate interests. As George P. Fletcher writes, it is time for loyal bonds, born of history and experience, to prevail both over impartial morality and the self-interested thinking of the market trader. In this extended essay, George P. Fletcher offers an account of loyalty that illuminates its role in our relationships with family and friends, our ties to country, and the commitment of the religious to God and their community. Fletcher opposes the traditional view of the moral self as detached from context and history. He argues instead that loyalty, not impartial detachment, should be the central feature of our moral and political lives. Writing as a political "liberal," he claims that a commitment to country is necessary to improve the lot of the poor and disadvantaged. This commitment to country may well require greater reliance on patriotic rituals in education and a reconsideration of the Supreme Court's extending the First Amendment to protect flag burning. Given the worldwide currents of parochialism and political decentralization, the task for us, Fletcher argues, is to renew our commitment to a single nation united in its diversity. Bringing to bear his expertise as a law professor, Fletcher reasons that the legal systems should defer to existing relationships of loyalty. Familial, professional, and religious loyalties should be respected as relationships beyond the limits of the law. Thus surrogate mothers should not be forced to surrender and betray their children, spouses should not be required to testify against each other in court, parents should not be prevented from willing their property to their children, and the religiously committed should not be forced to act contrary to conscience. Yet the question remains: Aren't loyalty, and particularly patriotism, dangerously one-sided? Indeed, they are, but no more than are love and friendship. The challenge, Fletcher maintains, is to overcome the distorting effects of impartial morality and to develop a morality of loyalty properly suited to our emotional and spiritual lives. Justice has its sphere, as do loyalties. In this book, Fletcher provides the first step toward a new way of thinking that recognizes the complexity of our moral and political lives.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Divakaruni, Chitra Banerjee, PUBLISHER: Hyperion Books, "Divakaruni is a brilliant storyteller; she illuminates the world with her artistry; and shakes the reader with her love." --Junot Diaz Late afternoon sun sneaks through the windows of a passport and visa office in an unnamed American city. Most customers and even most office workers have come and gone, but nine people remain. A punky teenager with an unexpected gift. An upper-class Caucasian couple whose relationship is disintegrating. A young Muslim-American man struggling with the fallout of 9/11. A graduate student haunted by a question about love. An African-American ex-soldier searching for redemption. A Chinese grandmother with a secret past. And two visa office workers on the verge of an adulterous affair. When an earthquake rips through the afternoon lull, trapping these nine characters together, their focus first jolts to their collective struggle to survive. There's little food. The office begins to flood. Then, at a moment when the psychological and emotional stress seems nearly too much for them to bear, the young graduate student suggests that each tell a personal tale, "one amazing thing" from their lives, which they have never told anyone before. And as their surprising stories of romance, marriage, family, political upheaval, and self-discovery unfold against the urgency of their life-or-death circumstances, the novel proves the transcendent power of stories and the meaningfulness of human expression itself. From Chitra Divakaruni, author of such finely wrought, bestselling novels as Sister of My Heart, The Palace of Illusions, and The Mistress of Spices, comes her most compelling and transporting story to date. One Amazing Thing is a passionate creation about survival--and about the reasons to survive. Praise for One Amazing Thing "The plot of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's new novel could be ripped from the horrifying headlines about Haiti in a strange case of art imitating life....One Amazing Thing, which was written well before the Haiti earthquake, is receiving high praise." --USA Today "The appeal of these life stories, like that of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, is that they throw the spotlight onto varied lives, each with its own joys and miseries. Together, the stories show how easy it is to divert young lives into unforeseen and restrictive channels, and how hard it is for people to realize their early dreams. Their shared experiences and fears form the frame that holds together this compendium of short stories into an absorbing novel....At the end of her novel, her readers are fully engaged in what will happen to those nine people." --Washington Post "Hauntingly beautiful....One Amazing Thing is a page-turner with high drama, elegant writing, and lots of helpful tips for teamwork in a crisis." --Houston Chronicle "Her fiction is so intimate that it often seems as if cultural context is irrelevant. Her character's dreams and disappointment
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Porter, W. Thomas, PUBLISHER: Trafford Publishing, Almost fifty years ago, a group of student-athletes entered the University of Washington. As freshmen, they were not eligible to play varsity football so they began their collegiate football on a frosh team that went unbeaten against Northwest opponents. Most members of the team played both offense and defense. Some had to work part-time to finance their education. The single ones lived with other students in dormitories and fraternity houses. Some were married and had children. In , Washington had been rocked by a player revolt which led to the firing of the head football coach. Disgruntled, he exposed a slush fund used by zealous boosters to directly pay players more than the Pacific Coast Conference allowed. The Husky athletic program was put on probation for two years along with Cal, UCLA and USC. It was a difficult period for a once proud and successful program. Thirty-one year old George Briggs was hired as Athletic Director to clean up the mess and hire a new coach. Darrell Royal, a former All-America quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners and the head coach at Mississippi State, accepted a four-year contract in and started the Husky football program on the road to recovery. Royal's tenure was brief. After the season ended, Royal resigned to take his dream job at the University of Texas where he had a very successful career which included three national championships. Briggs then hired 29-year old Jim Owens, a teammate of Royal and an All-America end. He had been a top assistant under Bear Bryant at Kentucky and Texas A&M. He was one of the architects of the "Junction Boys" ten days in hell that forged the Aggies' conference championship threeyears later. Owens and his staff brought a philosophy that included an emphasis on team unity, defense, tough physical and mental conditioning, the use of the helmet to tackle and block and punish opponents, and a willingness to pay the price for success. In , the Huskies were mostly a bunch of sophomores - supposedly the youngest college team in America - and went 3-7. Over the next two years, the Huskies forged the second best record of a collegiate football team in America - 20 wins and two losses. With 20 victories, one tie, and one loss, only Mississippi had a better resume. In , they won the conference title, the first for Washington since , and upset heavily favored Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, 44-8. It was Washington's first Rose Bowl victory and brought respectability back to West Coast football. Shortly after that game, Bud Wilkinson, Jim Owens' former coach, called to congratulate his former pupil on the stunning victory. He said, "It would be hard to find a club anywhere, anytime, that played a 60-miniute period any better than that team that day." In the season, despite injuries to many key players including All-America quarterback and Hesiman hopeful, Bob Schloredt, the then senior-laden tea
