ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Love, Janice, PUBLISHER: Westview Press, These days, politics often seem to be local and global simultaneously, challenging people, politicians, and scholars to sort out what is domestic from what is international and how the two are related. Janice Love demonstrates the complex realities of how local and global politics are intimately interwoven, sometimes inextricably so, specifically in southern Africa. In southern Africa, like many other regions, such linkages have existed for decades, if not centuries. Yet the current era is different from previous times when human communities found themselves closely intertwined. Love examines military, political, and economic changes in recent decades. Students of international relations, comparative politics, and African studies will find the region's experience instructive in understanding larger trends in the world. Students particularly interested in Africa will gain insight not only about this region, but also its significance for the whole continent. Deliberately crosses the boundaries of domestic politics and foreign policy as well as comparative politics and international relations. By taking a globalization approach, connecting the local, regional and global, the book offers fresh insights into the dynamics of war and peace, wealth and poverty as well as local to global governance in southern Africa. Examines globalization in three arenas or domains (military, political, and economic), not only distinguishing them from each other, but also probing what has changed and what has remained the same across time.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Conard, Edward, PUBLISHER: Portfolio, In the aftermath of the Financial Crisis, many commonly held beliefs have emerged to explain its cause. Conventional wisdom blames Wall Street and the mortgage industry for using low down payments, teaser rates, and other predatory tactics to seduce unsuspecting home owners into assuming mortgages they couldn't afford. It blames average Americans for borrowing recklessly and spending too much. And it blames the tax policies and deregulatory environment of the Reagan and Bush administrations for encouraging reckless risk-taking by wealthy individuals and financial institutions. But according to "Unintended Consequences," the conventional wisdom masks the real causes of our economic disruption and puts us at risk of facing a slew of unintended--and potentially dangerous--consequences. "Unintended Consequences" is not a book that takes a couple of insights and expands them into 300 pages; rather, it covers the entire scope of the economy. It's a fascinating and contrarian case for how the economy "really" works, what went wrong over the past decade, and what steps we can take to start growing again. Whether you agree with the book's provocative and counterintuitive conclusions or not, "Unintended Consequences" will reward you with a sophisticated understanding of the contemporary economy, one no other book has yet provided. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ostreicher, David, PUBLISHER: Wheatmark, It has probably been some time since your mom last reminded you to brush your teeth or wash your hands. Yet, that advice was priceless then and even more valuable now These days, we are constantly reminded of threats to our health and the well-being of our children. They include preservatives, artificial additives, air and water pollution and drug resistant viruses, just to name a few. Thanks to advances in technology, more information than ever is available to us, but with so many sources offering advice, it often leads to confusing and contradictory suggestions about maintaining optimum health. As a result, it is easy to lose track of what the real perils are. For example: Which is the best way to prevent colds and flu: "Washing your hands or taking vitamin C?" Which is the best way a pregnant woman can avoid having a low birth weight infant: "Eating all natural foods or brushing her teeth?" Which is more likely to kill you: "A diet high in natural fats or a diet high in additives?" The answers to these questions may really surprise you. Thats because the American public has been misdirected. We have substituted myths, snake oil and false advertising for basic good sense and physical hygiene. This book is a refreshing and easy-to-use guide for being naturally healthy and happy again.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Steele, D. Gentry, PUBLISHER: Texas A&M University Press, The Big Bend region, outlined by the snakelike curve of the Rio Grande, is a land of deserts and mountains. The lowlands of the region, dominated by the desert sun, are the eastern margin of the Chihuahuan Desert, one of the most arid regions of the world. Rising above the desert floor are numerous mountain ranges, part of the Southern Sierras. These mountain islands of cooler and moister terrain above the sere desert give the Big Bend an incredible wealth of diverse biological communities. Together, the deserts and the mountains of the Big Bend are the largest and last wild area remaining in Texas. In Land of the Desert Sun, D. Gentry Steele explores this fascinating region with his camera, leading the reader to enjoy the Big Bend through the eyes of a naturalist and historian. Taken in black and white to emphasize light, shadow, and texture. Steele's photographs present the Big Bend in a way that appeals to the sense of awe at the grandeur of the region's geological scale and at the detail of life that hangs on determinedly in that harsh place. In addition to his fifty photographs, taken over the a course of four years. Steele shares firsthand experiences and provides a brief natural and cultural history of the Chihuahuan Desert and the Big Bend National Park, placing the photographs in context. His descriptions provide an intellectual experience of the Big Bend country, as the photographs provide an emotional experience of the land. Big Bend enthusiasts and photography fans alike will find that Steele's breath-taking portrait provides a richer understanding of this unique region.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Miller, Kerby A., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, The first "translantic" history of the Irish, Emigrants and Exiles promises to become a landmark in our understanding of this important emigration movement. From the early s to the early s, no fewer than seven million people emigrated from Ireland to north America. This vast flow amounted to much more than mere numbers: it at once reflected and compelled enormous social changes on both sides of the Atlantic. Emigrants and Exiles chronicles the momentous causes of the Irish emigration and its far-reaching impact--on the people themselves, on the land they left behind, and on the new one they came to. Drawing on enormous original research, Kerby Miller focuses on the thought and behavior of the "ordinary" Irish emigrants, Catholic and Protestant, as revealed in their personal letters, diaries, journals and memoirs as well as in their songs, poems, and folklore. He finds that while many were eager newcomers to "the land of promise," many more saw themselves as involuntary "exiles" who had been forced to leave Ireland by cruel fate or British oppression. The exile mentality, Miller shows, was deeply rooted in Irish history, culture, and personality, and it profoundly affected the traumatic course of modern Irish history even as it shaped the Irish-American experience in very particular ways. The impressive scope of Miller's work embraces all the successive waves of Irish emigration, and he fills the book with rich human detail. About the Author:Kerby A. Miller is Associate Professor of History at the University of Missouri, Columbia.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Irr, Caren / Caren Irr / Irr, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, In "The Suburb of Dissent "Caren Irr explores the leftist literary subculture of the United States and Canada during the s to reconstruct the ideas of mass culture, class, and nationality that emerged as a result of the Great Depression. Unearthing plots and characters that still surface in contemporary narratives, Irr juxtaposes classic and neglected works of criticism, fiction, poetry, and journalism and demonstrates how leftist writers resisted totalitarianism much more thoroughly than Cold War accounts would suggest. Irr highlights works by Richard Wright, John Dos Passos, Nathanael West, and others to uncover the complex relationship between American anti-communism and communist anti-Americanism. In an unprecedented move, she extends her inquiry to the work of Canadian intellectuals such as Dorothy Livesay and Hugh MacLennan to reveal the important yet overlooked fact that the territory at the border of the United States and Canada provided a vital contact zone and transnational "home" for leftist thinkers. Attending to intersections of race, ethnicity, and gender, Irr illustrates the ways dissenting writers made culture actively respond to the political crises of the Great Depression and questioned the nature of what it means to be "American." Drawing on insights from postcolonial and American studies and taking into account the intellectual and cultural dimensions of leftist politics, "The Suburb of Dissent" is the first study of the s to bring together U.S. and Canadian writings. In doing so, it reveals how the unique culture of the left contributed to North American history at this critical juncture and beyond.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gilroy, Paul, PUBLISHER: Columbia University Press, In an effort to deny the ongoing effect of colonialism and imperialism on contemporary political life, the death knell for a multicultural society has been sounded from all sides. That's the provocative argument Paul Gilroy makes in this unorthodox defense of the multiculture. Gilroy's searing analyses of race, politics, and culture have always remained attentive to the material conditions of black people and the ways in which blacks have defaced the "clean edifice of white supremacy." In "Postcolonial Melancholia," he continues the conversation he began in the landmark study of race and nation "'There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack'" by once again departing from conventional wisdom to examine -- and defend -- multiculturalism within the context of the post-9/11 "politics of security." This book adapts the concept of melancholia from its Freudian origins and applies it not to individual grief but to the social pathology of neoimperialist politics. The melancholic reactions that have obstructed the process of working through the legacy of colonialism are implicated not only in hostility and violence directed at blacks, immigrants, and aliens but in an inability to value the ordinary, unruly multiculture that has evolved organically and unnoticed in urban centers. Drawing on the seminal discussions of race begun by Frantz Fanon, W. E. B. DuBois, and George Orwell, Gilroy crafts a nuanced argument with far-reaching implications. Ultimately, "Postcolonial Melancholia" goes beyond the idea of mere tolerance to propose that it is possible to celebrate the multiculture and live with otherness without becoming anxious, fearful, or violent.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Perry, Claire, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Since the arrival of the Spanish explorers in the sixteenth century, California has been thought of as a land of promise and opportunity. This lavishly illustrated catalog, which is to accompany a major exhibit opening in April at Stanford's Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts and traveling subsequently to two other museums, presents a fascinating cultural history of an idyllic vision of California that still figures prominently in the American imagination. Brought together in one show for the first time, this combination of art is unique in its range from high art to popular representations. Currier and Ives lithographs and the work of early European cartographers are juxtaposed with photographs by Carleton E. Watkins, Arnold Genthe, and Eadweard Muybridge, and paintings by Albert Bierstadt, James Walker, and William Hahn, among others. With one hundred and fifty plates--sixty in full color--Pacific Arcadia illuminates the imagery of the California Dream. Perry investigates how and why this vision of a Pacific paradise was developed and marketed to the public, taking as her subject the images produced by early visitors and residents confronted by the peculiarities of California's landscape, the abundance of its natural resources, and the omnipresence of the vast Pacific. Using paintings, drawings, maps, photographs, newspaper and book illustrations, and printed ephemera dating from the seventeenth century to , Pacific Arcadia examines the ways these images represented California as a place where economic bliss could be attained in a spectacular natural setting.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Winch, Julie, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, In A Gentleman of Color, Julie Winch provides a vividly written, full-length biography of James Forten, one of the most remarkable men in 19th-century America. Forten was born in into a free black family. As a teenager he served in the Revolution and was captured by the British. Rejecting an attractive offer to change sides, he insisted he was a loyal American. By he was the leading sailmaker in Philadelphia, where he became well known as an innovative craftsman, a successful manager of black and white employees, and a shrewd businessman. He emerged as a leader in Philadelphia's black community and was active in a wide range of reform activities. He was especially prominent in national and international antislavery movements, served as vice-president of the American Anti-Slavery Society, and became close friends with William Lloyd Garrison, to whom he lent money to start up the Liberator. Forten was also the founder of a remarkable dynasty. His children and his son-in-law were all active abolitionists and a granddaughter, Charlotte Forten, published a famous diary of her experiences teaching ex-slaves in South Carolina's Sea Islands during the Civil War. When James Forten died in , five thousand mourners, black and white, turned out to honor a man who had earned the respect of society across the racial divide. This is the first serious biography of Forten, who stands beside Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr. in the pantheon of African-Americans who fundamentally shaped American history.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brooks, F. Erik, PUBLISHER: Mercer University Press, In Statesboro, Georgia, two schools coexisted: one white and the other black. Yet, these schools were intertwined by their geographical location and the traditions of the segregated South. There are many glaring similarities between the white students of Georgia Southern University's forerunner, the First District A&M School, and the black students of the Statesboro Industrial and High School. Yet as happened all too often in the South as implementation of the federal court's desegregation orders took shape, "Negro" schools were downgraded or outright closed. Statesboro was no different. While, First District A&M became a regional university, Statesboro Industrial and High School was downgraded to a junior high school. In , integration on the higher-education level at Georgia's flagship university captured national attention. Few works if any have examined desegregation in the context of non-flagship universities. Likewise, there is a misguided mythology that desegregation occurred quietly at Georgia Southern University: it's clear that while there was not the violence and rioting seen elsewhere in Southern universities, blacks were marginalized and did not feel welcome at the college. A passive group after the initial integration, blacks adopted tactics of protest and confrontation to empower themselves. Taking a page from the Civil Rights Movement, black students and faculty established organizations to confront discrimination and gain access to campus leadership positions. This is a story about the defeats, victories, struggles, and developments of blacks at Georgia Southern University.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gibson, John Schuyler / Gibson, John S., PUBLISHER: Praeger Publishers, Since World War II, remarkable progress has been made toward establishing more effective international laws and organizations to reduce opportunities for confrontation and conflict, and to enhance the pursuit of security and well-being. This book offers a detailed record of that progress, as well as its meaning for our times and those ahead. Taking a historical, theoretical, and case-study approach, John Gibson provides the reader with a broad understanding of how international organizations evolved to serve the interests of their member states, how the constitutional charters of organizations provide a coherent statement of goals and means to goals, and how these organizations are assuming increasing authority in the international system. The work traces the progression of international constitutional and human rights law, with an emphasis on the past 45 years. In the first part, Gibson discusses the historic processes of political relations and mutual reliance; the evolution of these patterns through World War II; the subsequent history of the United Nations; the prime goals of international constitutional law; and the organizations' range of authority--from the high state to the supra-organization level. Part two offers a case study of the progression of international human rights law. Separate chapters trace the history of human rights in religion and philosophy and the role of the state in international law, while the concluding chapter on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights demonstrates how organizations actually function. This book will be a valuable resource for courses in international relations and international law, as well as an important addition to academic andprofessional libraries.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mate, Mavis, PUBLISHER: Boydell Press, It has long been thought that the post Black Death period offered unparallelled opportunities for women. However, through a careful consideration of economic and legal changes affecting women of all social classes and conditions, the author shows that this was not the case, taking issue with orthodox opinion. She argues that marriage at a late age was not customary for women, and that the ability of wives to supplement their income with intermittent paid labour (at harvest time, for example) was not so great as has been supposed: rather, most married women spent more time on unpaid agricultural labour on their own land than their peers had done in the pre-plague economy. Professor Mate also demonstrates that there is little evidence to support the current belief that widowhood was the period in a woman's life when she enjoyed most power, freedom, and independence; moreover, legal changes were a mixed blessing for women, leaving some widows with a larger portion and a more secure title to land, but totally depriving others. Throughout, the book pays much attention to class as well as gender, showing how many things were determined by it, from what a woman wore or ate to the age at which she married, her power within the household, and even her vulnerability to rape.Professor MAVIS E. MATEteaches in the Department of History at the University of Oregon.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Coben, Harlan, PUBLISHER: Large Print Press, A New York Times Bestseller A Main Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club, Doubleday Book Club, Literary Guild, and Mystery Guild Harlan Coben, author of the coast-to-coast bestseller "No Second Chance," delivers an emotionally powerful thrill-ride of a novel that asks the question: How far would you go to protect your family? An ordinary snapshot causes a suburban mother's world to unravel in an instant. When Grace Lawson picks up a newly developed set of family photographs, there is a picture that doesn't belong - a photo from at least twenty years ago. In the photo are five people: four Grace can't recognize and one that looks strikingly like her husband, Jack. When Jack sees the photo, he denies he's the man in it. But later that night, while Grace lies in bed, he drives away without explanation, taking the photograph with him. In the days that follow, Grace struggles with doubts and unanswered questions, along with the realization that others are looking for Jack - including one fierce, silent killer who will not be stopped. About the author: Winner of the Edgar Award, the Shamus Award, and the Anthony Award, Harlan Coben is the author of ten previous novels, including the New York Times bestsellers "No Second Chance, Gone for Good," and "Tell No One," and his highly popular Myron Bolitar series. Harlan Coben lives in Ridgewood, New Jersey, with his wife and their four children.
