The Transfer of Cognitive Skill

Does skill in geometry make it easier to learn music? The issue of the transfer of learning from one domain to another is a classic problem in psychology as well as an educational question of great importance, which this ingenious new book sets out to solve through a theory of transfer based on a comprehensive theory of skill acquisition. The question was first studies systematically at the turn of the century by the noted psychologist Edward L. Thorndike, who proposed a theory of transfer based on common elements in two different tasks. Since then, psychologists of different theoretical orientations--verbal learning, gestalt, and information processing--have addressed the transfer question with differing and inconclusive results. Singley and Anderson resurrect Thorndike's theory of identical elements, but in a broader context and from the perspective of cognitive psychology. Making use o a powerful knowledge-representation language, they recast his elements into units of procedural and declarative knowledge in the ACT* theory of skill acquisition. One skill will transfer to another, they argue, to the extent that it involves the same productions or the same declarative precursors. They show that with production rules, ransfer can be localized to specific components--in keeping with Thorndike's theory--and yet still be abstract and mentalistic. The findings of this book have important implications for psychology and the improvement of teaching. They will interest cognitive scientists and educational psychologists, as well as computer scientists interested in artificial intelligence and cognitive modeling.

La produzione è ancora in corso e quando verrà fermata, quali saranno le David Gilmour più ricercate e di maggior valore? In risposta mi sorge spontaneo il parallelismo con le prime Les Paul o le prime Strato, anche se siamo ovviamente in un contesto differente. Il valore di questa chitarra è anche legato alla sua storia e alle peripezie che ha vissuto dal punto di vista delle modifiche strutturali da parte di David o dei suoi tecnici su sua richiesta (se ne parla nel libro). Il ponte mobile, i pick up, il manico, i tasti del manico, la leva, l'ingresso jack, il micro-switch, i colori del body, le corde stesse, sono tutti stati modificati e perfezionati secondo le richieste di David. Le corde hanno per esempio una scalatura particolare. Il micro-switch ai più non è noto in quanto poco visibile a primo impatto, in realtà se si presta attenzione lo si nota! Si trova tra il potenziometro del volume e il selettore a 5 vie e permette interessanti combinazioni del suono! The Other American: The Life of Michael Harrington

Ironically, although his vocation was as a movement-builder, his book alone sparked no movement; it did swiftly result in policy -- President Johnson's War on Poverty -- though without the focus or level of funding found in European welfare states that Harrington, a former Catholic Worker turned socialist, argued was necessary. Decades later, several European socialist leaders reputedly believed that had he been European, he would have been a prime minister. But since he wasn't, his life was lived in surroundings too small for his gifts. Sectarian politics swallowed much of his energy in the s, leaving organizational commitments and battle scars that crippled his potential to play a leading role in shaping the political movements of the s. Remarkably, Harrington bounced back to achieve great success in the s, with the Democratic Agenda movement, which crafted significant progressive planks in the Democratic Party platform. Isserman (If I Had a Hammer), a noted historian of the American Left, does an excellent job of drawing the reader in with Harrington's family background and early life, but there's too little exploration of his writing and of the conservative forces arrayed against him in the '70s and '80s for readers to fully appreciate the sweep and sophistication of his intellectual vision or his capacity to adapt. Still, this is a valuable and intriguing look at a major figure of the American left of enduring influence.
