The Favored Circle: The Social Foundations of Architectural

The Favored Circle: The Social Foundations of Architectural

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Stevens, Garry, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The popular view of architecture focuses on individual creative geniuses, those who have designed the most "significant" works. According to Garry Stevens, however, successful architects owe their success not so much to genius as to social background and a host of other factors that have very little to do with native talent. To concentrate only on the profession of architecture is to ignore the much larger field of architecture, which structures the entire social universe of the architect and of which architects are only one part. This book critically surveys that field, exposing many myths and debunking a number of heroes in the process. Using the conceptual apparatus of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, Stevens describes the field of architecture on two levels. First, he provides a detailed account of the field as it is at any given point in time, describing the different components and their relationships. Second, he analyzes the dynamics of the field through time, from the Renaissance to the present. He discusses the system of architectural education, as well as everyday aspects such as the competition for reputation. He concludes that throughout history, the most eminent architects have been connected to each other by master-pupil and collegiate relations. These networks, which still exist, provide a mechanism for architectural influence that runs parallel to that of the university-based schools.

Monte Carlo Methods, Basics

Monte Carlo Methods, Basics

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kalos, Malvin H. / Whitlock, Paula A., PUBLISHER: Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH, This introduction to Monte Carlo Methods seeks to identify and study the unifying elements that underlie their effective application. It focuses on two basic themes. The first is the importance of random walks as they occur both in natural stochastic systems and in their relationship to integral and differential equations. The second theme is that of variance reduction in general and importance sampling in particular as a technique for efficient use of the methods. Random walks are introduced with an elementary example in which the modelling of radiation transport arises directly from a schematic probabilistic description of the interaction of radiation with matter. Building on that example, the relationship between random walks and integral equations is outlined. The applicability of these ideas to other problems is shown by a clear and elementary introduction to the solution of the Schrodinger equation by random walks. The detailed discussion of variance reduction includes Monte Carlo evaluation of finite-dimensional integrals. Special attention is given to importance sampling, partly because of its intrinsic interest in quadrature, partly because of its general usefulness in the solution of integral equations. One significant feature is that Monte Carlo Methods treats the "Metropolis algorithm" in the context of sampling methods, clearly distinguishing it from importance sampling. Physicists, chemists, statisticians, mathematicians, and computer scientists will find Monte Carlo Methods a complete and stimulating introduction.

Its publication is a major literary event". -- The Los Angeles Times Book Review The original edition of Life Supports, published in , was greeted as one of the most significant literary works to appear in this country. Cited by The New York Times Book Review, as "one of our finest... poets", Bronk went on to win the American Book Award and a reputation, in the words of Kirkus Reviews, as "one of the most solid and unfrivolous poets". Since then, there have been nine additional books, including a volume of collected essays Vectors and Smoothable Curves, which the Los Angeles Times called "the products of a unified sensibility in the tradition of our most original prose stylists". Among writers of his generation, few are as esteemed by those who require the highest standards for the books they read. Bronk's "rare gift" as an essay in the Voice Literary Supplement recently argued, "is the ability to float difficult truths on fleeting snatches of spoken breath". Bronk, according to Compound Eye, "is one of America's greatest living poets". According to poet and critic Michael Heller, he is "one of our modern masters". The new edition of Life Supports makes available once again one of the principal literary works of our time.

Political Thought and International Relations: Variations on

Political Thought and International Relations: Variations on

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bell, Duncan, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Political realism dominated the study of international relations during the Cold War. Since then, however, its fortunes have been mixed: pushed onto the backfoot during s, it has in recent years retuned to the centre of scholarly debate in international relations. Yet despite its significance in international relations theory, realism plays little role in contemporary international political theory. It is often associated with a form of crude realpolitik that ignores the role of ethical considerations in political life. This book explores an alternative understanding of realism. The contributors view realism chiefly as a diverse and complex mode of political and ethical theorising rather than either a value-neutral branch of social science or the unreflective defence of the national interest. They analyse a variety of historical and philosophical themes, probing the potential and the pathologies of realist thought. A number of the chapters offer critical interpretations of key figures in the canon of twentieth century realism, including Hans Morgenthau, E. H. Carr, and Reinhold Niebuhr. Others seek to widen the lens through which realism is usually viewed, exploring the writings of Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, and Leo Strauss. Finally, a number of the contributors engage with general issues in political theory, including the meaning and value of pessimism, the relationship between power and ethics, the role of normative political theory, and what might constitute political 'reality.' Straddling international relations and political theory, this book makes a significant contribution to both fields.

Mods, Minis, and Madmen: A True Tale of Swinging London

Mods, Minis, and Madmen: A True Tale of Swinging London

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Truman, D. Richard, PUBLISHER: iUniverse.com, A nostalgic romp through the sixties that changed everyone's lives forever, "Mods, Minis, and Madmen"(c) presents a story of remarkable achievement during the twentieth century's most significant cultural reboot. It celebrates a wondrous age drugged by the can-do attitude of youth. Revolutionary London was the birthplace of the boutique, and Mary Quant introduced the mini-skirt-named after a car. John Stephen introduced heart-racing male boutiques on Kings Road that soon carved out a global niche. Lesley Hornby- also known as Twiggy, the Cockney dolly bird-strutted her popsicle legs while touting mini-fashions. East Londoner Vidal Sassoon gave new life to tousled hair with a look that is still with us today. And of course, British sounds, led by the Beatles, hammered the charts in every country able to tune in. The lyrics spoke to us and seemed to sympathize with our turmoil, revealing an honest understanding of life as it would be, up to the age of sixty-four. It was a booster shot that pumped up everyone living in the sixties, and their tales would be told decades later. "Mods, Minis, and Madmen"(c) is the tale of a writer and his disciples from the New World arriving in the old, just as the explosion was about to take place.

Catolicos: Resistance and Affirmation in Chicano Catholic

Catolicos: Resistance and Affirmation in Chicano Catholic

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Garcia, Mario T., PUBLISHER: University of Texas Press, Chicano Catholicism--both as a popular religion and a foundation for community organizing--has, over the past century, inspired Chicano resistance to external forces of oppression and discrimination including from other non-Mexican Catholics and even the institutionalized church. Chicano Catholics have also used their faith to assert their particular identity and establish a kind of cultural citizenship.Based exclusively on original research and sources, Mario T. Garcia here offers the first major historical study to explore the various dimensions of the role of Catholicism in Chicano history in the twentieth century. This is also one of the first significant studies in the still limited field of Chicano religious history.Topics range from how early Chicano Catholic intellectuals and civil rights leaders were influenced by Catholic Social Doctrine, to the role that popular religion has played in the lives of ordinary men and women in both rural and urban areas. Garcia also examines faith-based Chicano community movements like Catolicos Por La Raza in the s and the Sanctuary movement in Los Angeles in the s.While Latino/a history and culture has been, for the most part, inextricably linked with the tenets and practices of Catholicism, there has been very little written, until recently, about Chicano Catholic history. Garcia helps to fill that void and explore the impact--both positive and negative--that the Catholic experience has had on the Chicano community.

Corporate Advocacy: Rhetoric in the Information Age

Corporate Advocacy: Rhetoric in the Information Age

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hoover, Judith D., PUBLISHER: Praeger, Internal and external advocacy is a complex communication process, with many interwoven purposes, methods, and expected (or unexpected) outcomes. Judith Hoover and her contributors show what the advocacy processes are, using a fascinating set of case histories, and then analyze and evaluate them by means of rhetorical, cultural, critical, and argumentation theories. In doing so they blend organizational communication and classical rhetorical theory, and thus extend the concept of corporate advocacy into new areas of study. An important resource for teachers and students of communication theory and practice, and an unusual insight for corporate communication specialists. In fourteen case studies analyzed through three significant communication theory perspectives, Hoover and her contributors examine the concept of advocacy by looking at corporate rhetoric, corporate cultures, and the hidden sources of power inherent in both. We listen to the messages of corporate spokespersons such as Lee Iacocca. We observe the internal cultures of business and industry. We investigate the meanings of such terms as "Wall Street" and "consumerism." We broaden our view to include not only union advocacy, but also the role of language in the organizational distribution of power. By synthesizing these cases through yet a fourth perspective, the book not only extends the concept to recognize internal advocacy processes but also reveals the complexity of advocacy strategies that must be designed to accomplish multiple purposes and that must respond to multilayered and interconnected contexts.

Understanding State Constitutions

Understanding State Constitutions

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Tarr, G. Alan, PUBLISHER: Princeton University Press, For many Americans, the word "constitution" means just one thing: the national Constitution. According to a recent survey, almost half do not know that individual states also have constitutions. Scholars have also paid little attention to state constitutions, favoring the apparently more dynamic and significant federal scene. G. Alan Tarr seeks to change that in this landmark book. A leading authority on state legal issues, he combines history, law, and political science to present a thorough and long-needed account of the distinct and important role of state constitutions in American life. Tarr shows that state constitutional politics are dominated by three crucial issues with little salience at the national level: the distribution of power among groups and regions within states, the scope of state and local governmental authority, and the relation of the state to economic activity. He explains how state constitutions differ from the national Constitution in treating not only matters of high principle but also such mundane subjects as ski trails and motor vehicle revenues. He also explores why state constitutions, unlike their federal counterpart, have been so frequently amended and replaced. Tarr concludes that the United States not only has a system of dual constitutionalism but also has dual constitutional cultures. Powerfully argued and meticulously researched, the book fills an important gap in political and legal studies and finally gives state constitutions the scholarly attention they richly deserve.

Crowded Airwaves: Campaign Advertising in Elections

Crowded Airwaves: Campaign Advertising in Elections

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nelson, Candace J. / Dulio, David A. / Thurber, James A., PUBLISHER: Brookings Institution Press, Political advertising plays a key role in modern electioneering and has formed part of political campaigns since the earliest federal elections were held in the United States. As modes of mass communication have evolved, so have the venues for campaign advertisingfrom newspapers to radio and television, and today, the Internet. Not only have the outlets for political advertising expanded over the past twenty years, so have the number of groups using it to convey information and advance their points of view. Because political advertising has become such a pervasive medium for candidates, political parties, and special interest groups, understanding its role in election campaigns becomes all the more important. Crowded Airwaves gathers some of the most significant new work in American political advertising and communication. The contributors provide an objective and balanced analysis of political advertising: its causes, its growth, and its consequences on elections in the United States. The chapters in this volume tackle three of the most interesting and most complicated issues in political advertising today: the characterization of ads and the need to measure their impact; the agenda-setting and priming effects of ads; and the role and implications of issue advertising for the electorate. The contributors focus in particular on the effects and consequences of negative advertising. Crowded Airwaves will appeal to readers who are interested in political campaigns and communication. It will be of special importance to those concerned with the tone and content of electoral campaigns and political discourse.

de Kooning's Bicycle: Artists and Writers in the Hamptons

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Long, Robert, PUBLISHER: Farrar Straus Giroux, Some of the twentieth century's most important artists and writers--from Jackson Pollock to Saul Steinberg, Frank O'Hara to Jean Stafford--lived and worked on the East End of Long Island years before it assumed an alternate identity as the Hamptons. The home they made there, and its effect on their work, is the subject of these searching, lyrical vignettes by the critic and poet Robert Long. Pollock moved to Springs because he thought he wanted to stop drinking, but he found a connection to nature there that inspired some of the most significant paintings of our time. Others followed him. When Fairfield Porter bought a house in Southampton, the New York School suddenly had a new headquarters, and James Schuyler and Frank O'Hara found companionship and raw material for their poems on South Main Street and on the three-hour train ride between the city and the East End. Willem de Kooning rode his bike every day between his studio in the East Hampton woods and the bay, where the light informed every brushstroke he put to canvas from the early s on. In "De Kooning's Bicycle, " Long mixes storytelling with history to re-create the lives and events that shaped American art and literature as we know it today, in a landscape where town met country and the modern met America's rural past.

Advances in Mixed-Method Evaluation: The Challenges and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Greene, Jennifer C. / Caracelli, Valerie J. / Ev, PUBLISHER: Jossey-Bass, Evaluation theory and practice today are characteristically pluralistic, embracing diverse perspectives, methods, data, and values within and across studies that aim to generate more insightful and meaningful evaluative claims. This volume seeks to strengthen the promise of pluralistic evaluation by advancing an enhanced conceptual framework for planning and implementing mixed-method evaluation studies. Previous mixed-method work has concentrated on the technical level of method, focusing on combining qualitative and quantitative methods within one evaluation study. The present mixed-method volume addresses the philosophical level of paradigm, analyzing the challenges of combining in one study different, even conflicting, assumptions about the nature of social phenomena and our claims to know them. The volume argues for a shift in the mixed-method conversation. The shift would be away from a preoccupation with explicit assumptive differences among paradigms, such as objectivity-subjectivity and realism-relativism, and toward other characteristics of social inquiry traditions. Such characteristics define these traditions in important ways but are not logically irreconcilable. The significant advance here is to redirect the bases for mixing methods away from what may well be incommensurable philosophical assumptions and toward other inquiry characteristics that can more productively share a common analytic space. Through analysis of illustrative cases, this volume presents an array of conceptual and practical ideas for promising mixed-method inquiry directions. This is the 74th issue of the quarterly journal" New Directions for Evaluation."

The Bishop's Palace: Architecture and Authority in Medieval

The Bishop's Palace: Architecture and Authority in Medieval

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Miller, Maureen, PUBLISHER: Cornell University Press, This lavishly illustrated book looks at the art and architecture of episcopal palaces as expressions of power and ideology. Tracing the history of the bishop's residence in the urban centers of northern Italy over the Middle Ages, Maureen C. Miller asks why this once rudimentary and highly fortified structure called a domus became a complex and elegant "palace" (palatium) by the late twelfth century. Miller argues that the change reflects both the emergence of a distinct clerical culture and the attempts of bishops to maintain authority in public life. She relates both to the Gregorian reform movement, which set new standards for clerical deportment and at the same time undercut episcopal claims to secular power. As bishops lost temporal authority in their cities to emerging communal governments, they compensated architecturally and competed with the communes for visual and spatial dominance in the urban center. This rivalry left indelible marks on the layout and character of Italian cities. Moreover, Miller contends, this struggle for power had highly significant, but mixed, results for western Christianity. On the one hand, as bishops lost direct governing authority in their cities, they devised ways to retain status, influence, and power through cultural practices. This response to loss was highly creative. On the other hand, their loss of secular control led bishops to emphasize their spiritual powers and to use them to obtain temporal ends. The coercive use of spiritual authority contributed to the emergence of a "persecuting society" in the central Middle Ages.

Protein Conformation - No. 161

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ciba Foundation / Caba Foundation, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Protein Conformation Chairman: F.M. Richards One of the major unsolved problems in biology and chemistry is how the amino acid sequence of a protein determines its three-dimensional structure, yet this structure is fundamental to the functioning and mechanism of action of enzymes, channels and receptors. Since the pioneering modelling work of Pauling in the s and the X-ray structure determinations by Kendrew and Perutz in the s, much structural information on proteins has been amassed. Several hundred protein structures have now been solved by X-ray crystallography and, more recently, NMR spectroscopy has had a significant impact on the study of structures of small proteins in solution. In this book, contributions from experts in the fields of X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, molecular modelling and protein engineering provide insight into current views on the protein folding problem and point to avenues for future progress. The use of molecular dynamics simulations to provide information about protein structure, dynamics and stability, and about protein-- protein interactions, is discussed. Who Will Be Saved?: Defending the Biblical Understanding of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: House, Paul R. / Thornbury, Greg A., PUBLISHER: Crossway Books, Of the many doctrinal challenges facing the church today, the most critical may be opposition to the traditional, biblical view of God and the doctrine of salvation. For centuries Christians agreed that God is sovereign, that He does not change, that He is both kind and all-powerful. Yet in recent decades process theologians have regularly depicted God as a constantly evolving deity, and postmodernists have defined Him in diverse, even contradictory ways. A number of scholars--some with evangelical roots or affiliations--have even gone so far as to claim that salvation may come through other religions and not exclusively through a conscious personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Given these internal and external challenges, evangelical Christianity must reassert the inerrant, biblical definition of God and the doctrine of salvation, and do so in a way that is convincing in our postmodern setting. That is the goal of Who Will Be Saved? Some of the most significant figures in evangelical theology--including Carl F.H. Henry, D. A. Carson, and R. Albert Mohler--explore the traditional view of salvation through a contemporary lens, beginning with the doctrine of God as the author of salvation. They then move on to the pressing matters confronting Christians today--the exclusivity of Christianity, the work of the church, our evangelism strategies--that are driven by one's conclusions about the doctrine of God. The biblical response to inclusivist perspectives presented here will empower Christians to faithfully and convincingly continue declaring the gospel message in these postmodern times.

Tearing through the tales] one after the other, as I did, allows instant gratification; it also lets you appreciate how masterfully they' re constructed. No matter what Maupin writes next, he can look back on the rare achievement of having built a little world and made it run." --Walter Kendrick, "Village Voice Literary Supplement" By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Armistead Maupin' s bestselling "Tales of the City" series stands as an incomparable blend of great storytelling and incisive social commentary. These six classic comedies, some of which originally appeared as serials in San Francisco newspapers, have won Maupin critical acclaim around the world and enthralled legions of devoted fans. "Back to Barbary Lane" comprises the second trilogy of the series--"Babycakes" (), "Significant Others" (), and "Sure of You" () -- concluding the saga of the tenants, past and present, of Mrs. Madrigal' s beloved apartment house on Russian Hill. While the first trilogy celebrated the carefree excesses of the seventies, this volume tracks its hapless, all-to-human cast across a decade troubled by plague, deceit and overweening ambition. Like its companion volume, "28 Barbary Lane, Back to Barbary Lane" is distinguished by what "The Guardian" of London has called "some of the sharpest and most speakable dialogue you are ever likely to read." The Other American: The Life of Michael Harrington

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Isserman, Maurice, PUBLISHER: PublicAffairs, As Isserman notes, along with Silent Spring and The Feminine Mystique, Michael Harrington's The Other America stood out in the early s as a beacon illuminating a vital, neglected part of America's political landscape. Ironically, although his vocation was as a movement-builder, his book alone sparked no movement; it did swiftly result in policy -- President Johnson's War on Poverty -- though without the focus or level of funding found in European welfare states that Harrington, a former Catholic Worker turned socialist, argued was necessary. Decades later, several European socialist leaders reputedly believed that had he been European, he would have been a prime minister. But since he wasn't, his life was lived in surroundings too small for his gifts. Sectarian politics swallowed much of his energy in the s, leaving organizational commitments and battle scars that crippled his potential to play a leading role in shaping the political movements of the s. Remarkably, Harrington bounced back to achieve great success in the s, with the Democratic Agenda movement, which crafted significant progressive planks in the Democratic Party platform. Isserman (If I Had a Hammer), a noted historian of the American Left, does an excellent job of drawing the reader in with Harrington's family background and early life, but there's too little exploration of his writing and of the conservative forces arrayed against him in the '70s and '80s for readers to fully appreciate the sweep and sophistication of his intellectual vision or his capacity to adapt. Still, this is a valuable and intriguing look at a major figure of the American left of enduring influence.
