How Well Does Your Child Read?: A Step-By-Step Assessment of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cook, Ann, PUBLISHER: American Accent Training, Wouldn't every parent like an accurate assessment of their child's reading ability? How Well Does Your Child Read? not only provides an accurate assessment, but the assessment itself takes only twenty minutes Author and English teacher Ann Cook's own second-grade son couldn't read. To solve the problem, she came up with an easy way for any parent to know what grade level their child reads. "School report cards give an indication of some of the broader categories of a child's reading ability", writes Cook, "However, they neither specify which areas need strengthening, nor do they guide a parent in making up any deficiencies or in maximizing a good reader's assets". There are two sections in this book: a simple method to assess a child's reading level, and an easy guide to direct you through each step of helping your child become a better reader. -- Parents will learn how to: Identify Weak Areas, Develop New Skills, Chart Progress -- Reading level assessment in only 20 minutes -- Appropriate for kindergarten - fifth grade -- One of every two Americans have a serious reading problem and one in four cannot read at all -- First book of The 20-Minute Series

Everyday Thoughts about Nature: A Worldview Investigation of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cobern, William W. / Cobern, W. W., PUBLISHER: Springer, The primary goal of Everday Thoughts about Nature is to understand how typical ninth-grade students and their science teachers think about Nature or the natural world, and how their thoughts are related to science. In pursuing this goal, the book raises a basic question about the purpose of science education for the public. Should science education seek to educate scientific thinkers' in the pattern of science teachers? Or, should science education seek to foster sound science learning within the matrices of various cultural perspectives? By carefully examining the ideas about Nature held by a group of students and their science teachers, Cobern argues that the purpose of science education for the public is to foster sound science learning within the matrices of various cultural perspectives'. Cobern's two books, World View Theory and Science Education Research and now Everyday Thoughts about Nature, provide complementary accounts of theoretical and empirical foundations for worldview theory in science education. While many graduate students and researchers have benefited from his earlier work, many more will continue to benefit from this book.

Alternative Perspectives in Assessing Children's Language

Alternative Perspectives in Assessing Children's Language

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Holland, Kathleen / Bloome, David / Solsken, Judith, PUBLISHER: Praeger, One of the realities of educational practice in the late 20th century is the increasing role of assessment, especially of children's oral and written language. While there are many issues and problems surrounding this assessment, one problem that needs to be addressed is the lack of alternative ways of assessing children's language and literacy for K-12 practitioners. There are many ways to approach the assessment of language and literacy. How one approaches the assessment of oral and written language depends, in large part, on how language is defined and on what purposes language is viewed as serving. In this book, alternative ways of assessing language are based on three different perspectives defining language and its uses: anthropological, socio-psycholinguistic, and literary. Although applying these perspectives to language is not new, only recently have educators and others taken seriously the need for assessment of language to be consistent with the perspectives of language underlying classroom instruction. Simply put, as language education (including reading, writing, and oral language) becomes increasingly based upon anthropological, socio-psycholinguistic, and literary principles, the assessment of language and literacy must also be based upon such principles. This book discusses and illustrates how to reconceptualize assessment in terms of the alternative perspectives outlined here.

A Vision for Science Education: Responding to Peter

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cross, Roger / Cross, Roger, PUBLISHER: Routledge, One of the most important and consistent voices in the reform of science education over the last thirty years has been that of Peter Fensham. His vision of a democratic and socially responsible science education for all has inspired change in schools and colleges throughout the world. Often moving against the tide, Fensham travelled the world to promote his radical ideology. He was appointed Australia's first Professor of Science Education, and was later made a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his work in this new and emerging field of study. In this unique book, leading science educators from around the world examine and discuss Fensham's key ideas. Each describes how his arguments, proposals and recommendations have affected their own practice, and extend and modify his message in light of current issues and trends in science education. The result is a vision for the future of science teaching internationally. Academics, researchers and practitioners in science education around the world will find this book a fascinating insight into the life and work of one of the foremost pioneers in science education.
