ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Oxford University Press / Freund, David M., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, To fully appreciate our country's history and the problems and possibilities we face as a nation on the eve of a new century, Americans--young and old--need to know that the fascinating heritage of African Americans begins not with the slave ships of Portugal and Spain, but with the richly diverse tribes, cultures, and ancient civilizations of the African continent. We need to understand that the long journey for freedom and equality for all Americans began well before the Civil War, or even the Revolutionary War, and that the journey continues to this day. Now history's missing pages at last come to life with the publication of The Young Oxford History of African Americans. Spanning five centuries, this extraordinary 11-volume series paints a vibrant and compelling portrait of the lives of African Americans. Written by distinguished American historians, the series sets a new standard for accuracy, balance, and breadth of scholarship in a reference aimed at the general reader. The lively narrative is rich in gripping first person accounts and short character sketches that invite readers to relive history as African Americans experienced it. From the first black Africans brought as slaves into the Caribbean islands and the colonies of Central and South America to today's black filmmakers and politicians, the stories of remarkable individuals of great courage and ability are told, but also those of ordinary men and women whose struggles and accomplishments continue to shape history. Whatever their race or background, readers come away with a deeper appreciation of African Americans as a people who have long shared in the aspiration and expectations of their fellow citizens, but who have done so with a unique history and a unique set of barriers to overcome. Unrivaled in breadth or depth, The Young Oxford History of African Americans is an unforgettable portrait of a people. It is an essential reference not only for students of African-American history, but also for libraries, teachers, parents, and all of us who strive to understand the struggles and sacrifices of the American past, the formidable challenges of our present, and our brightest hopes for the future.

A Struggle Worthy of Note: The Engineering and Technological

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Wharton, David E., PUBLISHER: Greenwood Press, Not surprisingly, African Americans have faced considerable obstacles in pursuing careers in engineering in the United States. Wharton has constructed the first history of black efforts to advance in this field from Emancipation to the present. Utilizing contemporary correspondence and documents, Wharton shows the range of responses from educators and politicians on both sides of the controversy and examines in detail institutions and individuals responsible for the racial and educational climate surrounding this issue. The struggle for the opportunity and acceptance of African-American participants in the technological arena is a struggle worthy of note. The struggle and the examination of this topic is important because, despite the significance of the topic, it has been minimally explored. A pioneering effort, the book will be of concern to all students of American race relations, higher education, and the history of engineering education.

Slavery's Ghost: The Problem of Freedom in the Age of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Follett, Richard / Foner, Eric / Johnson, Walter, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, President Abraham Lincoln freed millions of slaves in the South in , rescuing them, as history tells us, from a brutal and inhuman existence with the promise of freedom and equal rights. This is a moment to celebrate and honor, to be sure, but what of the darker, more troubling side of this story? "Slavery's Ghost" explores the dire, debilitating, sometimes crushing effects of slavery on race relations in American history. In three conceptually wide-ranging and provocative essays, the authors assess the meaning of freedom for enslaved and free Americans in the decades before and after the Civil War. "Slavery's Ghost" asks important and challenging questions: How did slaves and freedpeople respond to the promise and reality of emancipation? How committed were white southerners to the principle of racial subjugation? And in what ways can we best interpret the actions of enslaved and free Americans during slavery and Reconstruction? Collectively, these essays offer fresh approaches to questions of local political power, the determinants of individual choices, and the discourse that shaped and defined the history of black freedom. Written by three prominent historians of the period, "Slavery's Ghost" forces readers to think critically about the way we study the past, the depth of racial prejudice, and how African Americans won and lost their freedom in nineteenth-century America. "American Revolution" features the work of 14 accomplished social historians, whose findings are adding new dimensions to our understanding of the Revolutionary era. But some of the most fascinating contributions to this volume come from the people themselves-the anecdotes, letters, diaries, journalism, and other documents that convey the experiences of the full spectrum of American society in the mid- to late-18th century (including women, African Americans, Native Americans, immigrants, soldiers, children, laborers, Quakers, sailors, and farmers).

Pursuing a Promise: A History of African Americans at

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brooks, F. Erik, PUBLISHER: Mercer University Press, In Statesboro, Georgia, two schools coexisted: one white and the other black. Yet, these schools were intertwined by their geographical location and the traditions of the segregated South. There are many glaring similarities between the white students of Georgia Southern University's forerunner, the First District A&M School, and the black students of the Statesboro Industrial and High School. Yet as happened all too often in the South as implementation of the federal court's desegregation orders took shape, "Negro" schools were downgraded or outright closed. Statesboro was no different. While, First District A&M became a regional university, Statesboro Industrial and High School was downgraded to a junior high school. In , integration on the higher-education level at Georgia's flagship university captured national attention. Few works if any have examined desegregation in the context of non-flagship universities. Likewise, there is a misguided mythology that desegregation occurred quietly at Georgia Southern University: it's clear that while there was not the violence and rioting seen elsewhere in Southern universities, blacks were marginalized and did not feel welcome at the college. A passive group after the initial integration, blacks adopted tactics of protest and confrontation to empower themselves. Taking a page from the Civil Rights Movement, black students and faculty established organizations to confront discrimination and gain access to campus leadership positions. This is a story about the defeats, victories, struggles, and developments of blacks at Georgia Southern University.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Campbell, James T., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Songs of Zion focuses on the African Methodist Episcopal Church, black America's oldest and largest independent church. Campbell charts the origins and evolution of African American independent churches, arguing that the very act of becoming Christian forced black Americans to reflect on their relationship to their ancestral continent. The book then turns to South Africa, examining the AME Church's entrance and evolution in a series of specific African contexts. The final third of the book is devoted to what Campbell calls "middle passages," to the careers of men and women who moved between South Africa and the United States in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Throughout the book, Campbell focuses on the comparisons that Africans and African Americans themselves drew between their situations, arguing that the transatlantic encounter enabled both groups to understand and act upon their worlds in new ways.
