Nichols wrote dozens of books on topics ranging from politics to gardens, and here muses on his feline companions' charms, proper care, and appreciation. We are choosing to publish these out-of-Timber-niche books because they are pure fun, and because of the enthusiastic reception our reprints of Nichols' gardening books have received. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hilton, Frank, PUBLISHER: Peter Owen Publishers, Charles Baudelaire was a pivotal link between Romanticism and Modernism and had a major influence on modern poetry, but few who have examined his life and work have fully understood the effect of opiate addiction on his personality, or the extent to which it damaged him. In this fascinating, comprehensive biography, Frank Hilton, lecturer at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in England, contends that the drug is at the root of all of Baudelaire's problems, and in particular his chronic inability to apply himself to any prolonged creative work, which constantly tormented him. Unquestionably there is significantly more to Baudelaire than his opium addiction. But a proper awareness of what it did to the poet helps to illuminate those puzzling aspects of his life and behavior that were not previously understood. This work will give those who know little or nothing about the great poet a wide-ranging portrait of a suffering artist, and to those who are familiar with Baudelaire's life and work, it will present him in an unexpected light.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rychlak, Joseph F., PUBLISHER: University of Nebraska Press, In , B. F. Skinner told Joseph Rychlak that the greatest disappointment resulting from the "cognitive revolution" was the turning of the human organism into a machine. Intrigued by this statement, Rychlak decided that after many years of formulation it was time to present his fundamentally teleological view of the human being, which he calls the "logical learning theory" (LLT). In this new theoretical perspective the author re-presents such concepts as intention, purpose, and free will. Significant aspects of the "mind-body" issue are explored here. Rychlak addresses teleological issues and provides a language for proper conceptualization. He uses experimental findings to support the notion of behavior as self-directed rather than mechanistic. In the process, Rychlak places LLT on the side of teleological explanation, in which concepts like free will, self-choice, purpose and intention are no longer dismissed. Rychlak compares LLT and existing formulations of behavior, including classical and operant conditioning, social learning theory, social constructionism, cognitive science, gestalt theories, and personality theories. Extensive research data and thorough discussions support Rychlak's theory. A glossary is also included.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Warry, John, PUBLISHER: Praeger Publishers, Alexander of Macedonia was undoubtedly one of the greatest generals of all time. His over-riding passion for war and conquest led him not only to confront the might of the Persian Empire but also to lead his armies as far afield as India. He managed to successfully portray himself as liberator of the Greek cities in Asia, and sought to fuse the culture of his own lands with those of the east by choosing to make Babylon the capital of his empire and encouraging his officers to take oriental wives. This book, by John Warry, an expert on the warfare of the Classical world looks at Alexander's campaigns, examining his principle battles in detail. The battles of the Granicus, Issus, Gaugamela and of the Hydaspes are all treated at length, as is the difficult siege of Tyre. These careful studies shed light on Macedonian tactics, in particular the combination of armoured infantry phalanx with fast-moving cavalry. The men and equipment of both Alexander and his Persian enemies are looked at, and this greatly helps to shed light on the later battle accounts. This title thus gives a comprehensive insight into Alexander's life and military actions, as well as placing them in their proper historical context and explaining their consequences.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Jacobs, Walter R., PUBLISHER: iUniverse, Two years after Walter R. Jacobs was forced to call his new stepmother "Mom," she cancelled what would have been his 13th Christmas. In the memoir Ghostbox" Jacobs explores a life where family problems are blamed on "disrespectful" children who refused to accept "Mom's" authority. His stepmother is a "sociological ghost," a force that limited his thoughts and decisions until he filled a special shoebox with objects that evoke significant memories: good, bad, and ugly. This "ghostbox" has rendered his stepmother's seething presence benign. Jacobs investigates how just a relatively short stay in his stepmother's house (seven years with his stepmother, father, and younger brother) led to almost twenty years of questions about multiple facets of his identity, such as the proper rules and rhythms of life as an African-American college professor. In the end, he finds the key to finally and completely breaking away from the dysfunctions that threatened his self-esteem and ability to interact normally with others. Jacobs includes an appendix of guidelines readers may use to create their own ghostboxes. He invites readers into a world where they can reflect on troubling aspects of their lives, and create strategies for making empowering changes.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Roldanus, Johannes, PUBLISHER: Routledge, In the Age of Constantine Christians experienced for the first time official recognition and support. The Roman Empire used religion not only as cement to unite its different populations, but as a means to win divine favor as well. When this mechanism was threatened by doctrinal dissensions or regional rivalries, the Emperor would intervene contributing to the supremacy of one persuasion. In the 20th century European Christianity lost its dominant position. Critics, seeing dominance as foreign to the Gospel's nature, blame the Constantinian Age as a time of error and fall. However, African and Asian Christians are fascinated by its successful inculturation. Such discussions demand examination and Roldanus provides a refined theological screening of the doctrinal and ethical thinking during the fourth century. Roldanus uses the concept of "contextualization" to appreciate this process. He makes clear that, however much the winning positions were dependent on the interfering of the State, the theological reflection went nevertheless its proper way, conditioned as it was by various understandings of salvation-in-Christ. There was a natural concern to relate salvation to the most important elements of the existing culture. This study aims to help students and interested lay-people to focus on the essentials and to form and unprejudiced opinion on this crucial period of history.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Price, Charles F., PUBLISHER: John F. Blair Publisher, The Civil War has left the Curtis family with a dead daughter, two dead sons, vengeful neighbors, and a once-grand home now broken down. Just as debilitating is Judge Madison Curtis's guilt over his actions in wartime, when he sacrificed another family to save his own. The most immediate reminder of the judge's past sins is a man he once held in bondage, who has returned to the mountains of western North Carolina after serving the Union army. In slavery, the Curtises knew him as Black Gamaliel, but he now insists on being known by his proper name -- Daniel McFee. They achieve an uneasy peace as Daniel proposes a sharecropping arrangement and begins a new life in freedom. But the judge perceives that the opportunity for true racial reconciliation after the war is being squandered. Militating against it is an antihero who would elevate the blacks by crushing the landed whites -- a demagogue by day and a killer by night. This novel examines those sacrificed on freedom's altar, from former Confederate soldiers to former slaves, all of whom struggle against bitterness to discover their better selves at an hour of need.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rowe, Peter G. / Kuan, Seng, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Built around snatches of discussion overheard in a Beijing design studio, this book explores attitudes toward architecture in China since the opening of the Treaty Ports in the s. Central to the discussion are the concepts of ti and yong, or "essence" and "form," Chinese characters that are used to define the proper arrangement of what should be considered modern and essentially Chinese. Ti and yong have gone through various transformations--for example, from "Chinese learning for essential principles and Western learning for practical application" to "socialist essence and cultural form" and an almost complete reversal to "modern essence and Chinese form." The book opens with a discussion of cultural developments in China in response to the forced opening to the West in the mid-nineteenth century, efforts to reform the Qing dynasty, and the Nationalist and Communist regimes. It then considers the return of overseas-educated Chinese architects and foreign influences on Chinese architecture, four architectural orientations toward tradition and modernity in the s and s, and the controversy over the use of "big roofs" and other sinicizing aspects of Chinese architecture in the s. The book then moves to the hard economic conditions of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, when architecture was almost abandoned, and the beginning of reform and opening up to the outside world in the late s and s. Finally, it looks at the present socialist market economy and Chinese architecture during the still incomplete process of modernization. It closes with a prognosis for the future.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Grapentine, Terry, PUBLISHER: Business Expert Press, Marketing decisions often misfire when driven more by beliefs than knowledge. Make Better Marketing Decisions: Lessons from the Philosophy of Science, guides readers on how to think more clearly and correctly when making these decisions, thereby increasing organizational success. The book is based on the field of epistemology--the study of how knowledge is created--within the philosophy of science. Epistemology is a difficult subject with its own vocabulary and concepts that are often esoteric and considered too academic for marketing decision makers and researchers to apply. Consequently, the first sections of the book disabuse this notion by explaining why incorporating a scientific way of viewing the world and the scientific method is actually a practical way to make better decisions. These introductory chapters transition into a more formal discussion of philosophy of science, epistemology, and why marketing is a social science as opposed to merely an art or a practice, like medicine or engineering. The main body of the book then guides the reader through selected lessons from the philosophy of science to improve decision making. Example topics are (1) applying scientific reasoning to decision making, (2) differentiating between symptoms vs. causes of consumer behavior, and (3) understanding the importance of theory development in translating information into understanding. The book concludes by identifying the necessary conditions for applying philosophy of science's lessons to decision making and how to strike the proper balance between (1) allocating resources for knowledge creation, and (2) managing the day-to-day realities of running a business.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gliboff, Sander, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The German translation of Darwin's "The Origin of Species" appeared in , just months after the original, thanks to Heinrich Georg Bronn, a distinguished German paleontologist whose work in some ways paralleled Darwin's. Bronn's version of the book (with his own notes and commentary appended) did much to determine how Darwin's theory was understood and applied by German biologists, for the translation process involved more than the mere substitution of German words for English. In this book, Sander Gliboff tells the story of how "The Origin of Species" came to be translated into German, how it served Bronn's purposes as well as Darwin's, and how it challenged German scholars to think in new ways about morphology, systematics, paleontology, and other biological disciplines. Gliboff traces Bronn's influence on German Darwinism through the early career of Ernst Haeckel, Darwin's most famous nineteenth-century proponent and popularizer in Germany, who learned his Darwinism from the Bronn translation. Gliboff argues, contrary to most interpretations, that the German authors were not attempting to "tame" Darwin or assimilate him to outmoded systems of romantic "Naturphilosophie." Rather, Bronn and Haeckel were participants in Darwin's project of revolutionizing biology. We should not, Gliboff cautions, read pre-Darwinian meanings into Bronn's and Haeckel's Darwinian words. Gliboff describes interpretive problems faced by Bronn and Haeckel that range from the verbal (how to express Darwin's ideas in the existing German technical vocabulary) to the conceptual. One of these conceptual problems, the origins of novel variation and the proper balance between creativity and constraint in evolution, emerges as crucial. Specialists in evolutionary biology today, Gliboff points out, continue to grapple with comparable questions--continuing a larger process of translation and interpretation of Darwin's work.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Moore, Patrick, PUBLISHER: Xlibris Corporation, "Robert Hayden has not been heard from for 5 years, ever since he disappeared during a politically-charged trial. His son, still angry over his father“ s actions, receives notice of his father“ s death and is told to come to a remote corner of northern New England. It is the first time any word as to his father“ s fate has been received. When he arrives, he learns where his father had been but not why and how he got there. The remote place has been a kind of exile from everyday life. The letters he discovers demonstrate a descent into despair over the years, but also an abiding love for his wife and son. These and other facts cause him to search more deeply into exactly what happened, and why - and whether powerful people are behind it all. He meets with ten of the jurors from the trial. Each has their own view of the case, the guilt or innocence of his father and why his father disappeared. As he proceeds, he learns that all was not proper in the handling of the jury and the case by the state. From an angry, "obey the rule" conformist who cannot understand his father“ s activism, he begins to appreciate more and more that vigilance is important to preserving democracy. Using the letters written during his father“ s years at the Ugala as instruction, he probes each juror to uncover unusual actions by the government during the trial. He also is ashamed that he has not made more effort in all these years to learn what happened to his father. Only after he returns to Ugala does he learn the truth about the cover-up and how to unravel the conflicting stories told by jurors and in the letters. He also learns what happened to the father who loved him more than he knew.
