ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Maclure, Margaret / Maclure, Maggie / Maclure Maggie, PUBLISHER: Open University Press, WINNER: AESA Critics' Choice Award ""With wonderful clarity Maggie MacLure shows how deconstructionism opens new avenues of critical inquiry and understanding for educational researchers. In exposing the hidden, ideological side of terms like clarity, certainty, mastery, and relevance she allows us to see schooling and educational policy in new ways. In so doing she allows us to imagine classrooms as liberating, pedagogical places, as places where new forms of desire, knowledge, and learning take place" Norman K. Denzin, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign" This book is both practical and provocative. It demonstrates the insights and the challenges of a discourse-based orientation to educational and social research. Drawing on a variety of educational and social science 'texts' - including press articles, life history interviews, parent-teacher consultations, policy debates and ethnographies - the author shows how knowledge, power, identities and realities are constructed and problematised in discourse. The book also deals with research itself as discursive practice, examining the texts that qualitative researchers produce and consume: reports, monographs, journal articles. Practical examples are included for researchers and graduate students wishing to 'interrogate' their own data from a discourse perspective. The author develops a critical awareness of the researcher's role as writer/reader of texts. The book makes the case for 'discursive literacy' in research. While its primary allegiances are to poststructuralism and deconstruction, it draws from a wide range of disciplines, including interaction sociology, feminist ethnography, literary theory, critical discourse analysis and art history. What holds the book together is the persistent question: how to do educational research and social research within a 'crisis of representation' that has unsettled the relationship between words and worlds?
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fleishman, Joel L. / Kohler, J. Scott / Schindler, Steven, PUBLISHER: PublicAffairs, Unique in all the world, the American foundation sector has been an engine of social change for more than a century. In this companion volume to "The Foundation: A Great American Secret," Joel Fleishman, Scott Kohler, and Steven Schindler explore 100 of the highest-achieving foundation initiatives of all time. Based on a rich array of sources--from interviews with the principals themselves to contemporaneous news accounts to internal evaluation reports--this volume presents brief case studies of foundation success stories across virtually every field of human endeavor. The influence of the foundations on American, and indeed global society, has only occasionally come into the public view. For every well-known foundation achievement--Andrew Carnegie's massive library building program or the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's public efforts to curb tobacco use--there are a great many lesser-known, but often equally important stories to be told. The cases in this volume provide a wealth of evidentiary support for Joel Fleishman's description of, and recommendations for, the foundation sector. With lessons for grant-makers, grant-seekers, public officials, and public-spirited individuals alike, this casebook pieces together 100 stories, some well known, others never before told, and offers hard proof of the foundation sector's immense and enduring impact on scientific research, education, public policy, and many other fields. The work that foundations have supported over the past century has achieved profound results. Yet foundations are capable of more and better. This volume, a window onto great successes of the past and present, is at once a look back, a look around, and a point of reference as we turn to the future.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Griffith, Dotty, PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster, Like jazz, barbecue is a uniquely American original, and few subjects ignite more passion, excitement, controversy, and competition. In "Celebrating Barbecue, " Dotty Griffith, restaurant critic for "The Dallas Morning News, " gives readers the lowdown on real barbecue, identifying the four great regional styles of American 'cue (Carolina, Memphis, Texas, and Kansas City), as well as what Griffith calls "micro-styles" like Santa Maria Beef Barbecue or St. Louis Barbecued Snouts. Though reducing barbecue to a set of rules and specifications is, as Griffith says, "like teaching a cat to bark," "Celebrating Barbecue" attempts (and succeeds) in doing just that, beginning with the history of barbecue, defining each region's preferences for meat, fuel, and seasonings. There are classic authentic recipes for slow-cooked meats such as Texas Brisket and North Carolina-Style Pulled Pork, with cooking temperatures, seasonings, woods, and techniques (including fail-safe techniques for bad weather or uncooperative equipment or fuels) explained in detail. Griffith includes recipes for mops, rubs, sauces, and marinades, as well as sources for ready-made flavor enhancers. A full complement of appetizers, sides, and desserts rounds out the more than 85 recipes. Menus are provided for each regional style so you can create your own barbecue feast. Travelers will find lists of barbecue restaurants, cook-offs, and festivals, and stay-at-homes will find the best places to mail-order 'cue, as well as a directory of pit masters and a section on cookers. Opinionated and informed, "Celebrating Barbecue" is written with wit, passion, and verve. A pleasure to read and to cook from, it's the only book you'll need to enjoy this most American of foods.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fulbrook, Mary, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, In A Small Town Near Auschwitz, historian Mary Fulbrook tells the story of Udo Klausa, a civilian administrator in the small town of Bedzin, an ordinary functionary who helped implement the Nazi's inhumane policies towards the Jews. Using a wealth of personal letters, memoirs, testimonies, interviews, and other sources, Fulbrook pieces together Klausa's role in the unfolding destruction of the Jews under his authority, as well as the heroic attempts at resistance on the part of some of his victims. She also offers fascinating insight into the inner conflicts of a Nazi bureaucrat who, throughout, considered himself "a decent man." Udo Klausa's case is so important because it is in many ways so typical. Behind Klausa's story is the larger story of how countless local functionaries across the Third Reich facilitated the murderous plans of a relatively small number among the Nazi elite--plans that could never have been realized, on the same scale, without the diligent cooperation of these very ordinary men. As Fulbrook shows, men like Klausa "knew" and yet mostly suppressed this knowledge, performing their day jobs without apparent recognition of their own role in the carnage, or any sense of personal wrongdoing or remorse--either before or after . For Fulbrook, an eminent historian, the story of Udo Klausa hits very close to home, because Fulbrook's mother was both a refugee from Nazi Germany and a close friend of Klausa's wife. Fulbrook has known the Klausa family all her life, but had no inkling of Udo's true role in the Third Reich until a few years ago, a stunning discovery that led directly to this deeply personal history of life in Nazi Germany.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Aaronovitch, David, PUBLISHER: Riverhead Books, An absorbing, probing look at the conspiracy theories that operate on the sidelines of history and the reasons they continue to play such a seditious role, from an award-winning journalist. Our age is obsessed by the idea of conspiracy. We see it everywhere- from Pearl Harbor to 9/11, from the assassination of Kennedy to the death of Diana. In this age of terrorism we live in, the role of conspiracy is a serious one, one that can fuel radical or fringe elements to violence. For David Aaronovitch, there came a time when he started to see a pattern among these inflammatory theories. these theories used similarly murky methods with which to insinu?ate their claims: they linked themselves to the supposed conspiracies of the past (it happened then so it can happen now); they carefully manipulated their evidence to hide its holes; they relied on the authority of dubious aca?demic sources. Most important, they elevated their believers to membership of an elite- a group of people able to see beyond lies to a higher reality. But why believe something that entails stretching the bounds of probabil?ity so far? Surely it is more likely that men did actually land on the moon in than that thousands of people were enlisted to fabricate an elaborate hoax. In this entertaining and enlightening book -aimed at providing ammunition for those who have found themselves at the wrong end of a conversation about moon landings or the twin towers-Aaronovitch carefully probes and explodes a dozen of the major conspiracy theories. In doing so, he examines why people believe them, and makes an argument for a true skepticism: one based on a thorough knowledge of history and a strong dose of common sense.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Partrick, John / Elianson, Grafton / Patrick, John, PUBLISHER: Information Age Publishing, The primary purpose of Issues in Career Development is to provide a broad look at the field of career development including career counseling, career guidance, career education, and general career development programming, and to examine some of the field's major themes, approaches, and assumptions. We will examine both knowledge from the past as well as what the future might bring. We will bring together a variety of experts/authors from the area of interest and try to provide readers with a framework for action based on the best available research information. The concept of career development is in a period of dramatic transition resulting from equally dramatic changes in the labor market and the socio-cultural environment. Work has a different meaning today than it had one hundred, fifty, or even ten years ago. Career is now much more tightly interwoven with life, and lifestyle. In that context, career development can only be understood when viewed as a part of the broader concept of human development. Past research clearly indicates that interventions can and do have a significant impact on a variety of career development areas (e.g. job satisfaction, worker productivity), however, there are significant questions that are yet to be answered, and given the changing career/work landscape, significant questions that are not yet known. Particular areas of interest for the future relate to the changing nature of the labor market, gender and minority group issues, socio-economic trends, etc. Historically, much of the research on career development has assumed that psychological factors play the major role in a person's career choices. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the environment plays a much bigger role than previously assumed. This monograph series will examine these and other relevant issues in the years to come.
Preamplificatore Technics SU-A40, Oggetto dalle grandi caratteristiche Soniche, Cablato con cavi di segnale OCC / OFC, Determinando prestazioni eccellenti. Description preamp features Class AA phono EQ and output circuitry, high speed EX capacitors, and an Active Servo Power Supply. It connects directly to the fixed input facilities of the SE-M100. LPs benefit from amplification by the SU-A40. Its phono EQ amp features Class AA construction for voltage amplification, reducing influence from RIAA network impedance fluctuations. Low-noise FETs and high slew rate circuitry provide a signal-to-noise ratio of 79dB for MM and 74dB for MC cartridges, while dropping distortion to % (MM, 20Hz to 20kHz). The Class AA output amp helps avoid distortion caused by the input impedance of the connected power amp and the connection cord. The result is a step up in excellence for all sources, digital and analogue. An electrolytic capacitor has two electrodes separated by an electrolyte. In a conventional capacitor additives are needed to prevent the electrolyte from corroding the oxide coating that protects the positive electrode (anode). But these additives also cause distortion. Now, biotechnology creates an electrolyte that is purer; allowing a more uniform oxide layer without sound muddying additives. These capacitors help bring out the full potential of Class AA amplification. Noise and voltage stability are particularly important considerations in a preamp's power supply because of the low-level signals being handled. The SU-A40 uses a feedback circuit comprised of a special stabilized voltage IC with excellent thermal characteristics and a wide band IC with outstanding high frequency characteristics. The SU-A40 is designed for high signal purity. The OCC/OFC wires contribute to outstanding performance in every section of the circuitry - from parts leads to i

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ahmed Talat / Ahmed, Talat, PUBLISHER: Routledge India, This book aims to provide a historical account of the All-India Progressive Writers' Association (AIPWA). In a structured narrative, it focuses on the political processes inside India, events and circumstances in South Asia and the debates and literary movements in Europe and the United States to demonstrate how the literary project was specifically informed by literary-political movements. It explores the theorisation of literature and politics that informed progressive writing and argues that the progressive conception of literature, art and politics was closer to the theorisation of two thinkers of whom the writers themselves knew very little - Leon Trotsky and Antonio Gramsci. The book charts the progressive movement's extension into the cultural arena through the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) and the deepening of its nation-wide character through a progressive nationalism instilled with left-wing ideology. One of the important aims of the AIPWA project was to advance the development of a popular vernacular based on the demotic language of north India - Hindustani. The book locates this issue within the broader nationalist discussion on the national language. Contrary to what is implied by much of the previous scholarship, the book argues that the progressive movement did survive the ravages of partition and that the progressives maintained organisations in both India and Pakistan. It looks at the short-lived but very colourful history of the PWA in Pakistan, using PWA documents, government records and personal testimonies. Arguing that literary output and cultural production cannot be understood, let alone interpreted, outside the context of the nationalist movement, war, independence and partition, the book presents a narrative that necessarily transcends disciplinary boundaries between literature, politics and history. Supplemented with literary and archival sources and oral testimonies from the members of the movement, it provides the readers with a balanced and considered assessment of one of the twentieth century's most influential and most interesting literary-political movements.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Huffstetler, Joel W., PUBLISHER: Authorhouse, This book grew out of a Bible Conference at Kanuga Conference Center in October, , led by Dr. George L. Carey, the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury. Archbishop Carey's theme was the life and ministry of St. Paul, with a focus on the Letter to the Ephesians. I was privileged to serve as a workshop leader and preacher during the conference, and I chose as the theme of my workshop to study St. Paul and reconciliation, using Ephesians as our primary text. The main thrust of the workshop was to study selected passages from Ephesians in detail, and to look to St. Paul's writings for guidance regarding reconciliation in the Body of Christ. We live in a time when there is such a pressing need in the Church for reconciliation, a rekindling of a spirit of love and mutual respect rather than the judgment and suspicion which all too often characterize relations among Christians who find themselves in disagreement with one another regarding the divisive issues of our time. This book advocates a renewed realization that in Jesus Christ what unites us as Christians is far greater than what divides us. These essays on selected passages from Ephesians and the concluding essay, The Way Forward, are offered in the cause of reconciliation. They are suitable for study by individuals as well as parish and diocesan study groups seeking reconciliation in the Church. Study questions are presented at the end of each chapter to foster reflection and discussion. "I welcome this book as an offering to us all. It presents one means for discovering a receptive stance to God's will for us, even in the midst of the harsh rhetoric and self-justifying proclamations of our day. I am grateful to Joel Huffstetler for hiscontribution to the forming of an attitude of the heart committed to reconciliation." From the Afterword by The Rt. Rev. Charles G. vonRosenberg, Bishop of East Tennessee.

Samyang 85mm T1.5 AS IF UMC VDSLR LensThe Samyang 85mm T1.5 is a manual focusprime lens, this VDSLR (Video DSLR) version has been developed primarilyfor professional cine / movie making purposes. The VDSLR versionfeature follow focus gearing and decoupled aperture, which allow theuser to smoothly and quietly change focus and aperture / depth of fieldwhist filming, and link to professional follow focus cam systems.TheSamyang 85mm T1.5 is a manual focus prime lens, designed to giveexceptional results at wide apertures. At T1.5 great images can beobtained, which is perfect for portraiture and low light shooting, particularly when mounted on a full frame DSLRs.The SamyangVDSLR Cine lenses are rated in T-Stops rather than F-stops which is thestandard for professional movie camera lenses. F-stop number expressesthe speed of the lens on the assumption that lens transmits 100% of theincident light, and therefore is theoretical rather than a real worldmeasurement. The T-number expresses the actual light transmission, andthus is accurate for exposure purposes. It is also worth noting that theSamyang lenses achieve excellent transmissions properties.Thebokeh (the character of the out-of-focus blur) is a primary concern forprofessionals choosing an ultra large aperture lens for shallowdepth-of-field photography. The Samyang 85mm T1.5 lens design offersexcellent bokeh quality of out-of-focus highlights when used near wideopen, perfect for film and cine applications. Independent tests andusers confirm the Samyang',s beautiful bokeh character, surpassing lenses4 times the price. The lens optical construction is the same asthe 85mm f1.4 lens comprising of 9 lenses divided into 7 optical groupswith one aspheric lens element. The Samyang 85mm is designed withinternal focusing (IF) meaning the lens does not increase in size whenfocusing. A further positive aspect to internal focusing is that thelens is much less likely to get dust inside, as opposed to externalfocusing (or zooming) lenses which can suck in dirt during use. The 8bladed aperture design aids a great bokeh character at near wide openapertures. The Samyang 85mm T1.5 IF MC features Multi-coatedlenses which aid the very high level of light transmission, and addedresistance to flare and ghosting. It features a good sized manual focusring and is perfectly adapted to most photographic applications(exclusive of sports or fast moving subjects) where manual focus is notan issue. Accurate for focus critical situations can be achieved throughuse of focusing in live view mode, available to most newer cameramodels. In practice users including professional photographers havefound manual focus of the Samyang 85mm not to be an issue, even shootingat f1.4 with a very shallow depth of field in low light scenarios withstatic and slow moving subjects accurate focus can be achieved givingexcellent results thought the image on full frame cameras.Thereare also increasing numbers of users using DSLRs for filming and HighDefinition (HD) video and manual focus lenses allows the user to alterfocus during filming, and hence why the VDSLR versions were developed.Thefocus ring features toothed rings compatible with professional gearedfollow focus systems available in the film industry and likewise atoothed, decoupled (de-clicked) aperture ring. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Strandberg, Victor H., PUBLISHER: University of Wisconsin Press, Since the s, Cynthia Ozick's stories, novels, and essays have gradually earned high critical acclaim. Victor Strandberg's "Greek Mind/Jewish Soul" is a comprehensive study of this exceptionally gifted author, correlating her creative art and her intellectual development. Strandberg devotes considerable attention to Ozick's struggle to maintain her Jewish religion and culture within a society saturated with Christian and secular values. By examining the influence of Western philosophical and literary traditions on Ozick and her particular social circumstances, Strandberg is able to ask larger questions about the merit of Ozick's work and its place within American literature. Strandberg begins by chronicling the cultural dilemmas of Ozick's early life. The daughter of struggling immigrant parents, Ozick sometimes endured anti-Semitic ostracism from classmates in the New York public schools. But even as she deeply immersed herself in her Judaic heritage, avidly learning Hebrew and studying Jewish history, she found the Gentile heritage irresistible, beginning with fairy tales in childhood and graduating to George Eliot, Edith Wharton, and Henry James. Her studies in Latin likewise awakened a love for classical literature that impinged powerfully upon her books, particularly "Trust" and "The Pagan Rabbi." By drawing on a range of sources, including his own ten-year correspondence with Ozick, Strandberg illuminates Ozick's thinking on volatile issues that troubled her during her formative years, including feminism, the Holocaust, and Jewish cultural survival. Strandberg then offers a close reading of her books and poems in chapters on "Trust, The Pagan Rabbi, Bloodshed," and "Levitation" and presents an astute analysis of her later novels, "The Cannibal Galaxy, The Messiah of Stockholm," and "The Shawl." After reviewing all the critical material written to date on Ozick, Strandberg concludes by rendering his own assessment of Ozick's literary achievement. He considers how "Jewish" her work is, how "American" it is, and finally, how major her seat is at the table of the canonized.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Wang, Dora Calott, PUBLISHER: Riverhead Books, The personal story of how a psychiatrist confronts the profound changes sweeping the medical establishment as they reshape her life and career. In the past two decades, a seismic shift has occurred within the walls of our nation's hospitals and doctor's offices. The medical profession- once considered a sacred, cherished vocation-has devolved into a business motivated by a desire for profits. Even psychiatry, once the mainstay of the human interaction between doctor and patient, has fallen victim to rising costs and dictates by insurance sources. How has medicine strayed so far from its roots? In "The Kitchen Shrink," psychiatrist and lecturer Dora Calott Wang delves into what happened. Through the prism of her own story, Wang elucidates key events in her professional life-the declining state of hospitals and clinics, the advent of managed care, and the rise of profits at the ex?pense of patient care-that highlight the medical profession's decline. Along the way we meet some of her patients, whose plights reflect the profession's growing indifference to the human lives at risk. There's Selena, whose grief over her mother's death and lack of family support make it difficult for her to take the medicine that keeps her body from rejecting her new liver, and Leonard, a schizophrenic with no health insurance who develops peritonitis and falls into a coma for three months. Each new story brings additional compromises as the medical landscape shifts under Wang's feet. She struggles with depression and exhaustion, witnesses the loss of top doctors who leave in frustration, and attempts to find a balance between work and home as it becomes ever clearer that she cannot untangle the uncertain future of her patients from her own. Part personal story and part rallying cry, "The Kitchen Shrink" is an unflinchingly honest, passionate, and humane inside look at the unsettling realities of free-market medicine in today's America.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Temes, Peter S., PUBLISHER: Three Rivers Press (CA), "The Power of Purpose" begins with a simple but remarkable statement: "The more you focus on helping others, the more you will succeed in reaching your own goals." Peter S. Temes builds on this fundamental insight to share a simple plan for living with the truest and most enduring kind of happiness. At the heart of "The Power of Purpose" are the "three levels of thinking." At the first level, we ask, Who am I? and What do I want? At the second level, we ask, Who do other people think I am? How do I look to them? But the real magic happens when we hit the third level, forgetting about ourselves and asking the questions that lend a powerful sense of purpose to our lives: How do others look to themselves? How can I help others become the people they want to be? To help us along the way, Temes, who teaches humanities at Columbia University, draws on the wisdom of great thinkers including Aristotle, Soren Kierkegaard, and Abraham Lincoln; the life lessons of great achievers ranging from Mother Teresa to Michael Jordan; and home truths he's gathered from his parents, his grandparents, and his three children. From all these sources and from his own life of great personal accomplishment, Temes identifies the essential knowledge that brings people happiness and success. He cites Aristotle's notion that happiness is not a psychological state but a moral one, resulting from doing good in the world. Temes also believes in the pivotal importance of trust and team-building in every area of life, from the family to the workplace to the street corner. "The Power of Purpose" is a map for finding the confidence and power, the opportunities and occasions, and--most important--the techniques and strategies for centering your relationships and work on helping others. It is a book with a point of view: the clearest path to your own success and happiness lies in helping others get to where they want to go. "From the Hardcover edition."
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: The World Bank / World Bank, Policy / World Bank Group, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Firms and entrepreneurs of all types--from microenterprises to multinationals--play a central role in growth and poverty reduction. Their investment decisions drive job creation, the availability and affordability of goods and services for consumers, and the tax revenues governments can draw on to fund health, education, and other services. The contribution they make to society depends largely on the way governments shape the investment climate in each location-through the protection of property rights, regulation and taxation, strategies for providing infrastructure, interventions in finance and labor markets, and broader governance features such as corruption. New sources of data from the World Bank highlight how investment climates vary dramatically across as well as within countries-and hence the potential for improvement. The World Development Report : A Better Investment Climate for Everyone argues that improving the investment climates of their societies should be a top priority for governments. Drawing on surveys of nearly firms in 53 developing countries, country case studies, and other new research, the Report explores questions such as: What are the key features of a good investment climate, and how do they influence growth and poverty? What can governments do to improve their investment climates, and how can they go about tackling such a broad agenda? What has been learned about good practice in each of the main areas of the investment climate? What role might selective interventions and international arrangements play in improving the investment climate? What can the international community do to help developing countries improve the investment climates of their societies? In addition to detailed chapters exploring these and related issues, the Report contains selected data from the World Bank's new program of Investment Climate Surveys, the Bank's Doing Business Project, and World Development Indicators --an appendix of economic and social data for over 200 countries. Now in its twenty-seventh edition, the World Development Report offers practical insights for policymakers, business developers, economic advisers, researchers, and professionals in the media and in non-governmental organizations. It is also an essential supplement to economic and development courses in both academic and professional settings.
