ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Deswarte, Yves / Cuppens, Fridiric / Jajodia, Sushil, PUBLISHER: Springer, This volume contains the papers presented at three workshops embedded in the 19th IFIP International Conference on Information Security (SEC), which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in August as a co-located conference of the 18th IFIP World Computer Congress in Toulouse, France. The first workshop was organized by IFIP Working Group 11.1, which is itself dedicated to Information Security Management, i.e., not only to the practical implementation of new security technology issued from recent research and development, but also and mostly to the improvement of security practice in all organizations, from multinational corporations to small enterprises. Methods and techniques are developed to increase personal awareness and education in security, analyze and manage risks, identify security policies, evaluate and certify products, processes and systems. The second workshop was organized by IFIP Working Group 11.8, dedicated to Information Security Education. This year, the workshop was aimed at developing a first draft of an international doctorate program allowing a specialization in IT Security. The draft is based upon selected papers from individuals or groups (from academic, military and government organizations), and discussions at the workshop. This draft will be further refined and eventually published as an IFIP Report. Finally, the last workshop was organized by IFIP Working Group 11.4 on Network Security. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together privacy and anonymity experts from around the world to discuss recent advances and new perspectives on these topics that are increasingly important aspectsin electronic services, especially in advanced distributed applications, such as m-commerce, agent-based systems, P2P, etc. The carefully selected papers gathered in this volume show the richness of the information security domain, as well as the liveliness of the working groups cooperating in the IFIP Technical Committee 11 on Security and Protection in Information Processing Systems. Information Security Management, Education and Privacy is essential reading for scholars, researchers, and practitioners interested in keeping pace with the ever-growing field of information security.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rossini, Jon D., PUBLISHER: Southern Illinois University Press, In "Contemporary Latina/o Theater," Jon D. Rossini explores the complex relationship between theater and the creation of ethnicity in an unprecedented examination of six Latina/o playwrights and their works: Miguel Pinero, Luis Valdez, Guillermo Reyes, Octavio Solis, Jose Rivera, and Cherrie Moraga. Rossini exposes how these writers use the genre as a tool to reveal and transform existing preconceptions about their culture. Through "wrighting"--the triplicate process of writing plays, righting misconceptions about ethnic identity, and creating an entirely new way of understanding Latina/o culture--these playwrights directly intervene in current conversations regarding ethnic identity, providing the tools for audiences to reexplore their previously held perspectives outside the theater.Examining these writers and their works in both cultural and historical contexts, Rossini reveals how playwrights use the liminal space of the stage--an area on the thresholds of both theory and reality--to "wright" new insights into Latina/o identity. They use the limits of the theater itself to offer practical explorations of issues that could otherwise be discussed only in highly theoretical terms.Rossini traces playwrights' methods as they address some of the most challenging issues facing contemporary Latinas/os in America: from the struggles for ethnic solidarity and the dangers of a community based in fear, to stereotypes of Latino masculinity and the problematic fusion of ethnicity and politics. Rossini discusses the looming specter of the border in theater, both as a conceptual device and as a literal reality--a crucial subject for modern Latinas/os, given recent legislation and other actions.Throughout, the author draws intriguing comparisons to the cultural limbo in which many Latinas/os find themselves today. An indispensable volume for anyone interested in drama and ethnic studies, "Contemporary Latina/o Theater" underscores the power of theatricality in exploring and rethinking ethnicity. Rossini provides the most in-depth analysis of these plays to date, offering a groundbreaking look at the ability of playwrights to correct misconceptions and create fresh perspectives on diversity, culture, and identity in Latina/o America.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Williams, Roger L., PUBLISHER: Penn State University Press, The Origins of Federal Support for Higher Education revises the traditional interpretation of the land-grant college movement, whose institutions were brought into being b the Morrill Act to provide for "the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes." Rather than being the inevitable consequence of the unfolding dynamic of institutional and socioeconomic forces, Williams argues, it was the active intervention and initiate of a handful of educational leaders that secured the colleges' future---above all, the activities of George W. Atherton. For nearly three decades, Atherton, who was the seventh president of the Pennsylvania State University, worked to secure consistent federal financial support for the colleges, which in their early years received little assistance from the states they were designed to benefit. He also helped to develop the institutions as comprehensive "national" universities grounded in the liberal arts and sciences---a conception that countered the prevailing view of the colleges as mainly agricultural schools.Atherton became the prime mover in the campaign to enact the Hatch Act, which encouraged the establishment of agricultural experiment stations at land-grant colleges. The act marked the federal government's first effort to provide continuous funding to research units associated with higher education institutions. At the same times, Atherton played a key role in the formation of the first association of such institutions: The Associations of American Agricultural Colleges and Experiment Stations. It was the Association that provided the critical mass needed to lobby Congress successively and to approach the many opportunities andthreats the land-grant colleges faced during the period. Atherton was also deeply involved in the campaign for the Morrill Act of , which provided long-sought annual appropriations to land-grant colleges for a broad range of academic programs and encouraged steady growth in state support during the s. Roger Williams traces the motives and tactics behind a series of laws that made the federal government irreversibly committed to funding higher education and scientific research and provides rich new insights into the complexities, polarities, and inherent contradictions of the history of the American land-grant movement.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: The World Bank / World Bank, Policy / World Bank Group, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Firms and entrepreneurs of all types--from microenterprises to multinationals--play a central role in growth and poverty reduction. Their investment decisions drive job creation, the availability and affordability of goods and services for consumers, and the tax revenues governments can draw on to fund health, education, and other services. The contribution they make to society depends largely on the way governments shape the investment climate in each location-through the protection of property rights, regulation and taxation, strategies for providing infrastructure, interventions in finance and labor markets, and broader governance features such as corruption. New sources of data from the World Bank highlight how investment climates vary dramatically across as well as within countries-and hence the potential for improvement. The World Development Report : A Better Investment Climate for Everyone argues that improving the investment climates of their societies should be a top priority for governments. Drawing on surveys of nearly firms in 53 developing countries, country case studies, and other new research, the Report explores questions such as: What are the key features of a good investment climate, and how do they influence growth and poverty? What can governments do to improve their investment climates, and how can they go about tackling such a broad agenda? What has been learned about good practice in each of the main areas of the investment climate? What role might selective interventions and international arrangements play in improving the investment climate? What can the international community do to help developing countries improve the investment climates of their societies? In addition to detailed chapters exploring these and related issues, the Report contains selected data from the World Bank's new program of Investment Climate Surveys, the Bank's Doing Business Project, and World Development Indicators --an appendix of economic and social data for over 200 countries. Now in its twenty-seventh edition, the World Development Report offers practical insights for policymakers, business developers, economic advisers, researchers, and professionals in the media and in non-governmental organizations. It is also an essential supplement to economic and development courses in both academic and professional settings.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Katagiri, Yasuhiro, PUBLISHER: University Press of Mississippi, In , two years after the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously outlawed legally imposed racial segregation in public schools, Mississippi created the State Sovereignty Commission. This was the executive agency established "to protect the sovereignty of the State of Mississippi... from encroachment thereon by the Federal Government." The code word encroachment implied the state's strong resolve to preserve and protect the racial status quo. In the nomenclature the formality of the word sovereignty supposedly lent dignity to the actions of the Commission. For all practical purposes the Sovereignty Commission intended to wage this Deep South state's monolithic resistance to desegregation and to the ever-intensifying crusade for civil rights in Mississippi. In the papers of the Commission were made available for examination. No other state has such extensive and detailed documentary records from a similar agency. Exposed to public light, they unmasked the Commission as a counterrevolutionary department for political and social intrigue that infringed on individual constitutional rights and worked toward discrediting the civil rights movement by tarnishing the reputations of activists. As the eyes of the citizenry studied the records, the Commission slid from sovereign and segregated to unsavory and abominable. This book, the first to give a comprehensive history of this watchdog agency, shows how, to this day, the Sovereignty Commission remains obscure, debated, and for many citizens a star chamber of the most sinister sort. Why was the Commission created? What were some of the political and social climates that initiated its creation? What were its activities during its seventeen years? What was its impact on the course of Mississippi and southern history? Drawing on the newly opened materials at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, this examination gives answers to such questions and traces the vicissitudes that took the Commission from governmental limelight to public opprobrium. This book also looks at the attitudes of the state's white citizenry, who, upon realizing the Commission's failure, saw the importance of a nonviolent accommodation of civil rights. Yasuhiro Katagiri, an associate professor of American history and government at Tokai University in Kanagawa, Japan, has been published in such periodicals as "American Review" and "49th Parallel: An Interdisciplinary Journal of North American Studies."

These uniquely Australian perspectives provide practical and spiritual lessons that can be applied in any part of the world.Voices in Disability and Spirituality from the Land Down Under presents an unflinching look at the shortcomings of many established church ministries when it comes to serving people with disabilities. In addition, you'll find a revealing case study focusing on the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA), which looks at the gap between its official theology and its actual policy and practice, and outlines a project designed to move the Church forward to more inclusive practices.Additionally, Voices in Disability and Spirituality from the Land Down Under: Outback to Outfront examines: why platitudes that are intended to give comfort, like "God has chosen this for you," "It's a test of your faith," or "We all have our crosses to carry" are at best problematic, and at worst damaging--with suggestions for pastoral responses that offer alternatives to "God-is-on-your-side" cliches the spiritual meaning and importance of community for people with disabilities, and the impact of community on their vitality and resiliency the Buddhist teaching called "sunyata, " or emptiness, and its potential to positively impact the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and those who know them wisdom contained in the ancient Jewish system of laws called "Halacha"--and its potential for empowering people with disabilities today how a pastoral care program that is flexible, accommodating, and relevant for disabled people was created at a small metropolitan school in New South Wales--and the effect of the program on the community the work of the Personal Advocacy Service, which recruits volunteers to be companions to people with intellectual disabilities the role of religion and philanthropy in the creation of educational programs for blind or vision-impaired students" and more"
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kidder, Rushworth M., PUBLISHER: William Morrow & Company, Why did a group of teenagers watch a friend die instead of putting their own reputations at risk? Why did a top White House official decide to come clean and accept a prison sentence during Watergate? Why did a finance executive turn down millions out of respect for her employer? Why are some willing to risk their futures to uphold principles? What gives us the strength to stand up for what we believe? As these questions suggest, the topic of moral courage is front and center in today's culture. Enron, Arthur Andersen, the U.S. Olympic Committee, abusive priests, cheating students, domestic violence -- all these remind us that taking ethical stands should be a higher priority in our culture. Why, when people discern wrongdoing, are they sometimes unready, unable, or unwilling to act? In a book rich with examples, Rushworth Kidder reveals that moral courage is the bridge between talking ethics and doing ethics. Defining it as a readiness to endure danger for the sake of principle, he explains that the courage to act is found at the intersection of three elements: action based on core values, awareness of the risks, and a willingness to endure necessary hardship. By exploring how moral courage spurs us to strive for core values, he demonstrates the benefits of ethical action to the individual and to society -- and the severe consequences that can result from remaining morally dormant. Moral Courage puts indispensable concepts and tools into our hands, equipping us to respond to the increasingly complicated moral challenges we face at work, at home, and in our communities. It enables us to make clear, confident decisions by exploring some litmus-test questions: Is the benefitworth the risk? Am I motivated by my desire to uphold my beliefs or just to impose them on others? Will my actions create collateral damage among those with no stake in the outcome? While physical courage may no longer be a necessary survival skill or an essential rite of passage out of childhood, few would dispute the growing need for moral courage as the true gauge of maturity. Treating this subject not as an esoteric branch of philosophy but as a practical necessity for modern life, Kidder deftly leads us to a clear understanding of what moral courage is, what it does, and how to get it.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Levin, Henry M., PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), Published in cooperation with the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory "Cost-Effectiveness will occupy a unique and important niche in the literature on normative economic analysis.... What Henry M. Levin does far better than other economic observer is to address the practical considerations in implementing cost analyses, with attention to the particular challenges of educational program evaluation. The educational evaluator with interest in costs will prize this book." --Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis "A very useful text for educational administrators as well as administrators in other public sectors. It would make an excellent textbook for students enrolled in educational or public administration courses. The concise text and numerous examples make the primer an interesting and useful guide and a valuable addition to the library of all those in public administration." --Resources in Review "Well organized, examining cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit, cost-utility, and cost-feasibility studies. It also highlights the benefits and pitfalls of these tools for decision making. The examples and applications used throughout the book are directed at educators but can be readily generalized to other professions and services... It is an excellent start... for the uninitiated who is interested in making or influencing decisions when dividing our society's resources." --American Journal of Occupational Therapy "A clear and concise guide to understanding-and using-cost- effectiveness techniques, this primer will be an essential resource for policymakers, evaluators, social researchers and students." --Institute for Research on Educational Finance and Governance "Twoattractive features of this book are the extensive use of examples to illustrate the concept and methodology of cost-effectiveness analysis and the excercises presented at the end of each chapter.... A very worthwhile publication for policymakers, administrators, and the beginning program evaluators." --Economics of Education Review "Henry M. Levin's Cost-Effectiveness seeks to help evaluators and administrators to understand the concepts, uses, and applications of cost-effectiveness, and also to provide a basic course of study for those who will then move on to higher levels. And, by and large, it succeeds.... Appendixes offer feedback on exercises and a very useful annotated bibliography. There is a brief list of references and a commendably full index.... A competent and useful text." --Evaluation in Higher Education In the midst of budget slashing and diminishing resources, the need for efficient public policies has never been greater. Henry M. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Shriver, Donald W., Jr., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Our century has witnessed violence on an unprecedented scale, in wars that have torn deep into the fabric of national and international life. And as we can see in the recent strife in Bosnia, genocide in Rwanda, and the ongoing struggle to control nuclear weaponry, ancient enmities continue to threaten the lives of masses of human beings. As never before, the question is urgent and practical: How can nations--or ethnic groups, or races--after long, bitter struggles, learn to live side by side in peace? In An Ethic for Enemies, Donald W. Shriver, Jr., President Emeritus of Union Theological Seminary, argues that the solution lies in our capacity to forgive. Taking forgiveness out of its traditional exclusive association with personal religion and morality, Shriver urges us to recognize its importance in the secular political arena. The heart of the book examines three powerful and moving cases from recent American history--our postwar dealings with Germany, with Japan, and our continuing domestic problem with race relations--cases in which acts of forgiveness have had important political consequences. Shriver traces how postwar Germany, in its struggle to break with its political past, progressed from denial of a Nazi past, to a formal acknowledgement of the crimes of Nazi Germany, to providing material compensation for survivors of the Holocaust. He also examines the efforts of Japan and the United States, over time and across boundaries of race and culture, to forgive the wrongs committed by both peoples during the Pacific War. And finally he offers a fascinating discussion of the role of forgiveness in the American civil rights movement. He shows, for instance, that even Malcolm Xrecognized the need to move from contempt for the integrationist ideal to a more conciliatory, repentant stance toward Civil Rights leaders. Malcolm came to see that only through forgiveness could the separate voices of the African-American movement work together to achieve their goals. If mutual forgiveness was a radical thought in , Shriver reminds us that it has yet to be realized in . "We are a long way from ceasing to hold the sins of the ancestors against their living children," he writes. Yet in this poignant volume, we discover how, by forgiving, enemies can progress and have progressed toward peace. A timely antidote to today's political conflicts, An Ethic for Enemies challenges to us to confront the hatreds that cripple society and threaten to destroy the global village.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Singer, Scott R. / Levine, Mark, PUBLISHER: Portfolio, "None of us knows what the future holds. But once you've learned how to confront and overcome the unexpected, this lack of knowledge will cease to make you anxious. Tomorrow will no longer be something to fear. And believe me, that's a great feeling" As a professional, you want to be ready for anything. You'll spend hours, dars, even years, perfecting your technique, studying the competition and stepping up to challenges in order to make yourself an all-star. But at some point in your life, regardless of what you do or how far up the ladder you've climbed, you will be thrown a curveball-an unexpected challenge that comes at you quickly and without warning. The kind that forces you to rethink, well, everything. Whether it's the loss of a job, a newly assigned responsibility at work, or a global recession that threatens your entire company or industry, an unanticipated charge can knock even the most experienced among us off guard. So if you want to succeed in business-and in life-it's not enough to be the smartest in the room or even the hardest working; you have to be a great curveball hitter. Investment banker Scott R. Singer learned this lesson the hard way. But after a series of career challenges and personal setbacks, he started to develop a new approach to dealing with unforeseen problems by adopting a new attitude toward life. He realized that curveballs are a part of the game and the greatest players know how to knock them out of the park. Singer shares his personal story and insights as well as those of some prominent curveball hitters he interviewed, such as Leslie Moonves of CBS, Alan Schwartz of Bear Stearns, and actor Michael J. Fox. Singer's rules for surviving and thriving when faced with uncertainty include: Step up to the plate: Accept what's happened; don't fight it. Tell others right away, and let them help. Be the batter, not the ball: Don't let your imagination get the best of you. Be a realist, not a pessimist. Keep your eye on the ball: Focus on what you can do instead of worrying about what might happen or what's beyond your control. This fun yet practical book is full of valuable advice and anecdotes that can help anyone avoid striking out at work (or at home) and maybe even turn those surprising challenges into tremendous opportunities. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nakhaeizadeh, Gholamreza / Taylor, C. C. / Nakhaeizadeh, G., PUBLISHER: Wiley-Interscience, The interface between statistics and machine learning (ML) is an increasingly popular research subject, as scientists and statisticians discover useful areas where these disciplines overlap. ML deals primarily with learning rules or structure, and while some books on the subject exist, this volume is the only one to integrate ML with statistics. It explores new areas where theory and methods can be shared and demonstrates the benefits to those working in either discipline. Written by leading experts in both fields, Machine Learning and Statistics is a result of the authors' participation in the European Conference in Machine Learning. This important collection of contributions was adapted from conference workshop material and reworked to address readers of diverse backgrounds and skills. For newcomers to the field, a thorough introduction surveys the various topics and supplies numerous references for further reading. The book's main focus is on classification, the most common area of intersection. The classification process uses information about a new example to assign the example to one of a known number of classes. Such methods typically involve a rule learned from an initial set of data, which is where ML comes into play. Other topics covered include prediction, control, and an introduction to methods of knowledge discovery in databases--a skill that has become especially relevant with the explosion in large-scale databases. Timely, practical, and innovative, this book offers a number of new algorithms and draws on real-world examples including financial and medical applications. It also includes two chapters on loans/credit applications that help identify bad risks and good customers--useful for those working with credit scoring and bad debt analysis. Machine Learning and Statistics is an invaluable resource for researchers involved with artificial intelligence and ML in academia, government, or industry, as well as those working with pattern recognition in statistical departments; for students at the graduate level who seek to expand their horizons; and for anyone who would like to learn more about these cutting-edge methodologies. The first book to explore the theory, methods, and applications of the relationship between machine learning and statistics. Here is the first book to address the growing demand for applications that integrate machine learning and statistics. The only text to focus on the interface between the two disciplines, this volume explores a mutually beneficial relationship that is fast becoming recognized by scientists, engineers, and researchers in data analysis and intelligent systems worldwide. The book shows that machine learning shares several areas of common research with statistics, most notably classification, prediction, and control. It demonstrates that statistical and probability methodologies can be applied in developing different machine learning algorithms and that these algorithms can
