But how did the funeral home come to hold such a position? What is its history? And is it guilty of the charges sometimes leveled against it? In Rest in Peace, Gary Laderman traces the origins of American funeral rituals, from the evolution of embalming techniques during and after the Civil War and the shift from home funerals to funeral homes at the turn of the century, to the increasing subordination of priests, ministers, and other religious figures to the funeral director throughout the twentieth century. In doing so he shows that far from manipulating vulnerable mourners, as Jessica Mitford claimed in her best-selling The American Way of Death (), funeral directors are highly respected figures whose services reflect the community's deepest needs and wishes. Indeed, Laderman shows that funeral directors generally give the people what they want when it is time to bury our dead. He reveals, for example, that the open casket, often criticized as barbaric, provides a deeply meaningful moment for friends and family who must say goodbye to their loved one. But he also shows how the dead often come back to life in the popular imagination to disturb the peace of the living. Quello che è ancora più interessante è che tutti questi elementi sono assemblabili tra loro tramite degli incastri standard e comuni a tutti i pezzi. Per di più gli incastri sono in grado di provvedere, senza l'ausilio di altri cavi e connessioni anche, a fornire corrente elettrica e segnale agli elementi che la necessitano. Questo sistema brevettato si chiama E-connect e riduce sensibilmente il tempo di montaggio semplificando ai minimi termini l'assemblaggio e garantendo il montaggio ottimale del sistema. In effetti, gli agganci obbligati tra i pezzi eliminano qualsiasi errore di montaggio e di allineamento, fornendo sempre e comunque un sistema pronto e giustamente tarato dal punto di vista meccanico e sonoro. In definitiva è possibile assemblare un sistema mono composto da un amplificatore e un solo top fino ad un setup stereo ben più potente composto da otto top e otto sub ( Watt). Spying on foreigners has long been regarded as an unseemly but necessary enterprise. Spying on one's own citizens in a democracy, by contrast, has historically been subject to various forms of legal and political restraint. For most of the twentieth century these regimes were kept distinct. That position is no longer tenable. Modern threats do not respect national borders. Changes in technology make it impractical to distinguish between 'foreign' and 'local' communications. And our culture is progressively reducing the sphere of activity that citizens can reasonably expect to be kept from government eyes. The main casualty of this transformed environment will be privacy. Recent battles over privacy have been dominated by fights over warrantless electronic surveillance or CCTV; the coming years will see debates over data-mining and biometric identification. There will be protests and lawsuits, editorials and elections resisting these attacks on privacy. Those battles are worthy. But they will all be lost. Modern threats increasingly require that governments collect such information, governments are increasingly able to collect it, and citizens increasingly accept that they will collect it. The point of this book is to shift focus away from questions of whether governments should collect information and onto more problematic and relevant questions concerning its use. Squier by Fender Deluxe Stratocaster Standard QMT
Vendo questa chitarra Squier, prodotta in Indonesia nel nello stabilimento della Cort Guitars (Cor-Tek). Le Deluxe Stratocaster erano modelli meglio rifiniti della serie Standard di casa Squier, in particolar modo quell'anno vennero prodotte Stratocaster con una laminatura per il top fiammata (FMT, Flame Maple Top) o marezzata (QMT, Quilt Maple Top), battipenna perlato e finissaggi burst particolari. Questa chitarra è stata la mia prima chitarra elettrica, acquistata a Roma da Your Music: è a tutti gli effetti una Stratocaster Standard a 22 tasti, Quilted Maple Top, tastiera di palissandro (di un bel tono scuro), colore Black Cherry Burst. La chitarra è in condizioni ottime, suonata sempre in casa, ponte e meccaniche in ottimo stato. Segnalo un unico difetto, dovuto a una disattenzione: la chitarra ha un'ammaccatura di piccole dimensioni, dovuta a una caduta a pochi centimetri da terra a causa dell'apertura della cerniera della custodia (il difetto è solo estetico e ben visibile nella foto, non incide affatto sul suono). Si tratta ovviamente di una chitarra di fascia bassa, da studio o da usare come muletto, ad ogni modo è molto ben fatta e qualitativamente di gran lunga superiore rispetto alle attuali produzioni cinesi. Vendo a 200 €, senza custodia; se ad acquistarla è un ragazzo che vuole acquistare il suo primo strumento la sconto a 180 €. Consegna a mano a Roma.
