In , Steve took a sabbatical from his pastorate to re-examine what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. This soul searching led him to resign his denominational affiliation. He is now post-denominationally devoted to reshaping the currenttheological, ecclesiastical, spiritual and social landscape through writing and speaking. In the new edition, we take advantage of a number of new studies that have been published on Al-Qaeda, fundamentalism, and American culture. In light of the presidential election, we have revised our discussion of conservative politics in the U.S. to suggest that the interesting phenomenon is not the victory of an avowedly liberal candidate, but, given the dire circumstances of the country, the narrowness of that victory. This is an opportune moment to re-emphasize our analysis of structural racism rather than indulge in premature congratulation. The election did not indicate a change in the ideological direction of the U.S., but illustrated the power of successful organization at all levels combined with political savvy that was careful not to alienate moneyed interests. "Organize" is one of the messages of the first edition, and this election provides us with a very powerful illustration. We also discuss how neoliberal policy was responsible for the meltdown of the Icelandic economy.

This was the executive agency established "to protect the sovereignty of the State of Mississippi... from encroachment thereon by the Federal Government." The code word encroachment implied the state's strong resolve to preserve and protect the racial status quo. In the nomenclature the formality of the word sovereignty supposedly lent dignity to the actions of the Commission. For all practical purposes the Sovereignty Commission intended to wage this Deep South state's monolithic resistance to desegregation and to the ever-intensifying crusade for civil rights in Mississippi. In the papers of the Commission were made available for examination. No other state has such extensive and detailed documentary records from a similar agency. Exposed to public light, they unmasked the Commission as a counterrevolutionary department for political and social intrigue that infringed on individual constitutional rights and worked toward discrediting the civil rights movement by tarnishing the reputations of activists. As the eyes of the citizenry studied the records, the Commission slid from sovereign and segregated to unsavory and abominable. This book, the first to give a comprehensive history of this watchdog agency, shows how, to this day, the Sovereignty Commission remains obscure, debated, and for many citizens a star chamber of the most sinister sort. Steve Fuller argues that Kuhn actually held a profoundly conservative view of science and how one ought to study its history. Early on, Kuhn came under the influence of Harvard President James Bryant Conant (to whom "Structure" is dedicated), who had developed an educational program intended to help deflect Cold War unease over science's uncertain future by focusing on its illustrious past. Fuller argues that this rhetoric made its way into "Structure," which Fuller sees as preserving and reinforcing the old view that science really is just a steady accumulation of truths about the world (once "paradigm shifts" are resolved). Fuller suggests that Kuhn, deliberately or not, shared the tendency in Western culture to conceal possible negative effects of new knowledge from the general public. Because it insists on a difference between a history of science for scientists and one suited to historians, Fuller charges that "Structure" created the awkward divide that has led directly to the "Science Wars" and has stifled much innovative research. In conclusion, Fuller offers a way forward that rejects Kuhn's fixation on paradigms in favor of a conception of science as a social movement designed to empower society's traditionally disenfranchised elements.
