Contemporary German Youth and Their Elders: A Generational

Contemporary German Youth and Their Elders: A Generational

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Watts, Meredith W. / Fischer, Arthur / Fuchs, Werner, PUBLISHER: Praeger, Systematic research on the changing experience and social and political characteristics of German youth has been carried out in the Federal Republic of Germany on an ongoing basis since the early s. Until now, however, the results of these long-term studies have not been made available in English. Six volumes of this research--including new analyses prepared especially for this book--are distilled in the present work, which offers a comprehensive and focused portrait of German youth of succeeding postwar generations from to the present. Following an introductory survey of the scope and themes addressed in the study, the authors highlight the contrasting experiences of youth of the s and those who came of age soon after the end of World War II. They examine the fundamental constituents of youth as a developmental period, with particular reference to changes in the recent era. Attitudinal scales are developed and applied to assessments of variations in social and political orientation among generations and between distinct subgroups of contemporary youth. Differences between young women in the early postwar period and the "alternative era" of the s and s are explored. Focusing on "views of the future," the final chapter looks at the diversity of lifestyles that has become characteristic of youth over the last decade and at the increasing differentiation between generations. Providng a wealth of new material on an important body of research, this book makes a substantial contribution to the study of youth in advanced industrialized nations. An appropriate resource for courses or studies in various disciplines in sociology, geography, political science, and socialhistory.

Chesnutt and Realism: A Study of the Novels

Chesnutt and Realism: A Study of the Novels

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Simmons, Ryan, PUBLISHER: University Alabama Press, An important examination of Charles Chesnutt as a practitioner of realism. With the release of previously unpublished novels and a recent proliferation of critical studies on his life and work, Charles W. Chesnutt () has emerged as a major American writer of his time--the age of Howells, Twain, and Wharton. In "Chesnutt and Realism, "Ryan Simmons breaks new ground by theorizing how understandings of literary realism have shaped, and can continue to shape, the reception of Chesnutt's work. Although Chesnutt is typically acknowledged as the most prominent African American writer of the realist period, little attention has been paid to the central question of this study: what does it mean to call Chesnutt a realist? A writer whose career was circumscribed by the dismal racial politics of his era, Chesnutt refused to conform to literary conventions for depicting race. Nor did he use his imaginative skills to evade the realities he and other African Americans faced. Rather, he experimented with ways of portraying reality that could elicit an appropriate, proportionate response to it, as Simmons demonstrates in extended readings of each of Chestnutt's novels, including important unpublished works that have been overlooked by previous critics. "Chesnutt and Realism" also addresses a curiously neglected subject in American literary studies--the relationship between American literary realism and race. By taking Chesnutt seriously as a contributor to realism, this book articulates the strategies by which one African American intellectual helped to define the discourses that influenced his fate. Ryan Simmons is Assistant Professor of English at Utah Valley State College

Social Cognition, Joint Attention, and Communicative

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Carpenter, Malinda / Nagell, Katherine / Tomasello, Michael, PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, The studies in this volume measure the various behaviors that are displayed as infants and mothers share their attention on an outside object: joint engagement, following gazes and points, gestures, imitation of actions, and language comprehension and production. The authors show how infants follow a progression from "sharing" to "following" to "directing" others' attention and behavior, and how these skills are related to early communicative competence. Deadly Lessons: Understanding Lethal School Violence

Deadly Lessons: Understanding Lethal School Violence

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Moore, Mark H. / Petrie, Carol V. / Braga, Anthony A., PUBLISHER: National Academy Press, How do we make sense of the tragedy of a school shooting or even draw objective conclusions from these incidents? Deadly Lessons is the outcome of the National Research Council's unique effort to glean lessons from six case studies of lethal student violence. These are powerful stories of parents and teachers and troubled youths, presenting the tragic complexity of the young shooter's social and personal circumstances in rich detail. The cases point to possible causes of violence and suggest where interventions may be most effective. Readers will come away with a better understanding of the potential threat, how violence might be prevented, and how healing might be promoted in affected communities. For each case study, Deadly Lessons relates events leading up to the violence, provides quotes from personal interviews about the incident, and explores the impact on the community. The case studies center on: -- Two separate incidents in East New York in which three students were killed and a teacher was seriously wounded. -- A shooting on the south side of Chicago in which one youth was killed and two were wounded. -- A shooting into a prayer group at a Kentucky high school in which three students were killed. -- The killing of 4 students and a teacher and the wounding of 10 others at an Arkansas middle school. -- The shooting of a popular science teacher by a teenager in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. -- A suspected copycat of Columbine in which six students were wounded in Georgia. For everyone who puzzles over these terrible incidents, Deadly Lessons offers a fresh perspective on the most fundamental of questions: Why?

Community Work Approaches to Child Welfare

Community Work Approaches to Child Welfare

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Wharf, Brian, PUBLISHER: University of Toronto Press, Community Work Approaches to Child Welfare presents a number of case studies that illustrate alternative approaches to child welfare that recognizes the strengths and tenacity of families who live in resource poor and essentially unfriendly environments (and that would drive middle class professionals to distraction). The strengths of these families can be harnessed to improve their situation and that of others. Community work approaches are provided by accessible organizations that involve families in the design and implementation of programs that affect them and that are dedicated to developing the capacity of communities to care for children and families. The case studies range from urban child welfare agencies in Toronto and Winnipeg, to the rural setting of Hazelton, B.C. and to examples of First Nation communities that have taken control of child welfare. The studies are written by Canadian scholars who are widely recognized for their innovative research and writing in community work and child welfare. Community Work Approaches to Child Welfare is also an indictment of the policies and practices that now govern the provision of child welfare services in Canada. The indictment argues that the policies that hold parents, and particularly single parent women, responsible for the care of their children without regard for the circumstances in which these families live is neither realistic nor helpful. It further holds that individualized and office based practice dominated by a paradigm of risk turns clients into objects thereby robbing them of their dignity and strengths. Community approaches make a viable alternative. Brian Wharf is Professor Emeritus, School of Social Work and Faculty of Human and Social Development, University of Victoria. During his career at this university he was Director, School of Social Work, Dean, Faculty of Human and Social Development, Professor in a multi- disciplinary graduate program and Acting Director, School of Public Administration.
