When You Are Engulfed in Flames

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sedaris, David, PUBLISHER: Back Bay Books, "David Sedaris's ability to transform the mortification of everyday life into wildly entertaining art," ("The Christian Science Monitor") is elevated to wilder and more entertaining heights than ever in this remarkable new book. Trying to make coffee when the water is shut off, David considers using the water in a vase of flowers and his chain of associations takes him from the French countryside to a hilariously uncomfortable memory of buying drugs in a mobile home in rural North Carolina. In essay after essay, Sedaris proceeds from bizarre conundrums of daily life-having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a fellow passenger on a plane or armoring the windows with LP covers to protect the house from neurotic songbirds-to the most deeply resonant human truths. Culminating in a brilliant account of his venture to Tokyo in order to quit smoking, David Sedaris's sixth essay collection is a new masterpiece of comic writing from "a writer worth treasuring" ("Seattle Times"). Praise for When You Are Engulfed in Flames: "Older, wiser, smarter and meaner, Sedaris...defies the odds once again by delivering an intelligent take on the banalities of an absurd life." --"Kirkus Reviews" This latest collection proves that not only does Sedaris still have it, but he's also getting better....Sedaris's best stuff will still--after all this time--move, surprise, and entertain." --"Booklist" Table of Contents: It's Catching Keeping Up The Understudy This Old House Buddy, Can You Spare a Tie? The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Palmer, Parker J., PUBLISHER: Jossey-Bass, "This book is for teachers who have good days and bad -- and whose bad days bring the suffering that comes only from something one loves. It is for teachers who refuse to harden their hearts, because they love learners, learning, and the teaching life." -- Parker J. Palmer from the Introduction] For many years, Parker Palmer has worked on behalf of teachers and others who choose their vocations for reasons of the heart but may lose heart because of the troubled, sometimes toxic systems in which they work. Hundreds of thousands of readers have benefited from his approach in THE COURAGE TO TEACH, which takes teachers on an inner journey toward reconnecting with themselves, their students, their colleagues, and their vocations, and reclaiming their passion for one of the most challenging and important of human endeavors. This book builds on a simple premise: good teaching cannot be reduced to technique but is rooted in the identity and integrity of the teacher. Good teaching takes myriad forms but good teachers share one trait: they are authentically present in the classroom, in community with their students and their subject. They possess "a capacity for connectedness" and are able to weave a complex web of connections between themselves, their subjects, and their students, helping their students weave a world for themselves. The connections made by good teachers are held not in their methods but in their hearts -- the place where intellect, emotion, spirit, and will converge in the human self -- supported by the community that emerges among us when we choose to live authentic lives. BONUS: Includes an audio CD featuring a 45-minute conversation between Parker Palmer and his colleagues, Marcy Jackson and Estrus Tucker from the Center for Courage & Renewal. They reflect on what they have learned from working with thousands of teachers in their "Courage to Teach" program (www.CourageRenewal.org)and with others who yearn for greater integrity in their professional lives.

After the Cure

After the Cure

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Levin, Martin A. / Sanger, Mary Bryna, PUBLISHER: University Press of Kansas, As alarming stories about new pathogens like the Ebola virus or Mad Cow Disease fill today's headlines, scientists face a test of their abilities to contain them. But public health officials face a crisis of their own, because even when effective treatments become available, efforts to control disease often fall short. After the Cure was written to improve the prospects for effective management of AIDS and other public health crises. Martin Levin and Mary Bryna Sanger draw on cases of previous large-scale public health initiatives to show how management effectiveness can meet threats to public health. Focusing on AIDS as the most compelling contemporary example of the need for change, the authors advocate a commonsense approach that seeks to minimize the chances of failure. They encourage health officials to exercise "strategic skepticism" by developing plans that anticipate potential problems -- such as scientific controversy over a vaccine's effectiveness or media sensationalism -- which could arise from flaws in program design and implementation. Case studies involving polio, swine flu, childhood immunization, reemergent TB, and the early AIDS experiences demonstrate the variety of managerial problems that can confront such initiatives. By reviewing the lessons of these cases, the authors suggest how their approach can be applied to the management of AIDS and future public health threats. They then present both a critique of the early mismanagement of the AIDS crisis and a scenario for "the day after an AIDS vaccine is discovered". Because epidemics are likely to increase, After the Cure clearly demonstrates the importance of anticipating obstacles to their management throughskillful scenario writing. Combining careful analysis with practical advice, it shows that in the public health arena, management matters as much as medicine.

Fall in love with Penguin Drop Caps, a new series of twenty-six collectible and gift-worthy hardcover editions, each with a type cover showcasing a gorgeously illustrated letter of the alphabet by superstar type designer Jessica Hische, whose work has appeared everywhere from Tiffany & Co. to Wes Anderson's film "Moonrise Kingdom" to Penguin's own bestsellers "Committed "and "Rules of Civility." A collaboration between Jessica Hische and Penguin Art Director Paul Buckley, the series design encompasses foil-stamped paper-over-board cases in a rainbow-hued spectrum across all twenty-six book spines and a decorative stain on all three paper edges. Penguin Drop Caps debuts with an "A" for Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," a "B" for Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre," and a "C" for Willa Cather's "My antonia," and continues with more classics from Penguin. D is for Dickens. The orphan Pip is destined to become a blacksmith like his brother-in-law Joe. But when Pip meets the beautiful Estella Havisham, he yearns for a gentleman's education in order to woo her. A mysterious legacy answers his ambition, and changes the course of his life, taking him far from the Marshes of youth--far, so he thinks, from his early terrifying encounter with an escaped convict, and his sister's class resentments. In this fictional autobiography, Pip's coming-of-age story becomes representative of the changing social landscape of nineteenth century England. As Pip's education provides upward social mobility, he must also learn hard lessons about self-delusion and forgiveness, love and loss, and the true nature of his "Great Expectations."

World Development Report : A Better Investment Climate

World Development Report : A Better Investment Climate

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: The World Bank / World Bank, Policy / World Bank Group, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Firms and entrepreneurs of all types--from microenterprises to multinationals--play a central role in growth and poverty reduction. Their investment decisions drive job creation, the availability and affordability of goods and services for consumers, and the tax revenues governments can draw on to fund health, education, and other services. The contribution they make to society depends largely on the way governments shape the investment climate in each location-through the protection of property rights, regulation and taxation, strategies for providing infrastructure, interventions in finance and labor markets, and broader governance features such as corruption. New sources of data from the World Bank highlight how investment climates vary dramatically across as well as within countries-and hence the potential for improvement. The World Development Report : A Better Investment Climate for Everyone argues that improving the investment climates of their societies should be a top priority for governments. Drawing on surveys of nearly firms in 53 developing countries, country case studies, and other new research, the Report explores questions such as: What are the key features of a good investment climate, and how do they influence growth and poverty? What can governments do to improve their investment climates, and how can they go about tackling such a broad agenda? What has been learned about good practice in each of the main areas of the investment climate? What role might selective interventions and international arrangements play in improving the investment climate? What can the international community do to help developing countries improve the investment climates of their societies? In addition to detailed chapters exploring these and related issues, the Report contains selected data from the World Bank's new program of Investment Climate Surveys, the Bank's Doing Business Project, and World Development Indicators --an appendix of economic and social data for over 200 countries. Now in its twenty-seventh edition, the World Development Report offers practical insights for policymakers, business developers, economic advisers, researchers, and professionals in the media and in non-governmental organizations. It is also an essential supplement to economic and development courses in both academic and professional settings.

Navajo Nation Peacemaking: Living Traditional Justice

Navajo Nation Peacemaking: Living Traditional Justice

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nielsen, Marianne O. / Zion, James W., PUBLISHER: University of Arizona Press, Navajo peacemaking is one of the most renowned restorative justice programs in the world. Neither mediation nor alternative dispute resolution, it has been called a "horizontal system of justice" because all participants are treated as equals with the purpose of preserving ongoing relationships and restoring harmony among involved parties. In peacemaking there is no coercion, and there are no "sides." No one is labeled the offender or the victim, the plaintiff or the defendant. This is a book about peacemaking as it exists in the Navajo Nation today, describing its origins, history, context, and contributions with an eye toward sharing knowledge between Navajo and European-based criminal justice systems. It provides practitioners with information about important aspects of peacemaking--such as structure, procedures, and outcomes--that will be useful for them as they work with the Navajo courts and the peacemakers. It also offers outsiders the first one-volume overview of this traditional form of justice. The collection comprises insights of individuals who have served within the Navajo Judicial Branch, voices that authoritatively reflect peacemaking from an insider's point of view. It also features an article by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and includes contributions from other scholars who, with the cooperation of the Navajo Nation, have worked to bring a comparative perspective to peacemaking research. In addition, some chapters describe the personal journey through which peacemaking takes the parties in a dispute, demonstrating that its purpose is not to fulfill some abstract notion of Justice but to restore harmony so that the participants are returned to good relations. "Navajo Nation Peacemaking" seeks to promote both peacemaking and Navajo common law development. By establishing the foundations of the Navajo way of natural justice and offering a vision for its future, it shows that there are many lessons offered by Navajo peacemaking for those who want to approach old problems in sensible new ways.

 Fender Stratocaster, original pre-CBS

Fender Stratocaster, original pre-CBS

This Fender Stratocaster dates from , or early latest, and has been a one-owner guitar since the mid 70s Despite the original appearance, this actually has a very old (probably s) refinish to both neck and body. There are no markings to identify it as a factory refin, but it is certainly good as. This guitar is still as purchased by the last owner circa other than the following two recent changes: The original tuners had been replaced with a set of Schallers. I have replaced these with a good set of original single-line Klusons. Luckily the Klusons conceal the added fixing holes for the Schallers, but there is still an impression from the washers on the front of the headstock. A superfluous added string tree has been removed, leaving a small hole in the front of the headstock. Otherwise this Strat is substantially original and in great playing condition, but with this kind of guitar I guess you need a lot more detail than that. So having checked it out pretty thoroughly, I'll go through all the "guitarchaeology" bit by bit. BODY This is a good honest body with no added holes or routs at all. The refinish is a 2-colour sunburst (possibly attempting to match the original as early 3-colour bursts tended to fade very quickly to 2-colour). As the pics show, there is an area of wear through the finish on the rear of the body, surrounded by various scratch marks and buckle rash (lesson learned - when playing a valuable guitar, don't wear chainmail!). But other than lacquer cracking over the entire surface, the rest is pretty clean with only minimal dings etc. The nail holes are pretty well obscured by the refin and I've only managed to positively locate 2 of them at all, but the two dowels in the rear (probably the most reliable indicator of originality) are easily findable if you know where to look. NECK The refinished neck is in excellent near ding-free condition and feels nicely played in, though not yet worn through the lacquer. I believe

The Power of Purpose: Living Well by Doing Good

The Power of Purpose: Living Well by Doing Good

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Temes, Peter S., PUBLISHER: Three Rivers Press (CA), "The Power of Purpose" begins with a simple but remarkable statement: "The more you focus on helping others, the more you will succeed in reaching your own goals." Peter S. Temes builds on this fundamental insight to share a simple plan for living with the truest and most enduring kind of happiness. At the heart of "The Power of Purpose" are the "three levels of thinking." At the first level, we ask, Who am I? and What do I want? At the second level, we ask, Who do other people think I am? How do I look to them? But the real magic happens when we hit the third level, forgetting about ourselves and asking the questions that lend a powerful sense of purpose to our lives: How do others look to themselves? How can I help others become the people they want to be? To help us along the way, Temes, who teaches humanities at Columbia University, draws on the wisdom of great thinkers including Aristotle, Soren Kierkegaard, and Abraham Lincoln; the life lessons of great achievers ranging from Mother Teresa to Michael Jordan; and home truths he's gathered from his parents, his grandparents, and his three children. From all these sources and from his own life of great personal accomplishment, Temes identifies the essential knowledge that brings people happiness and success. He cites Aristotle's notion that happiness is not a psychological state but a moral one, resulting from doing good in the world. Temes also believes in the pivotal importance of trust and team-building in every area of life, from the family to the workplace to the street corner. "The Power of Purpose" is a map for finding the confidence and power, the opportunities and occasions, and--most important--the techniques and strategies for centering your relationships and work on helping others. It is a book with a point of view: the clearest path to your own success and happiness lies in helping others get to where they want to go. "From the Hardcover edition."

From a Clear Blue Sky. Timothy Knatchbull

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Knatchbull, Timothy, PUBLISHER: Hutchinson Radius, A powerful survivor's account of the IRA bomb that killed the author's 14-year-old twin brother, his grandparents and a family friend and was published on the 30th anniversary of the atrocity. On the August bank holiday weekend in the UK in -year-old Timothy Knatchbull went out on a boat trip off the shore of Mullaghmore in County Sligo, Ireland. It was a trip that would cost four lives -- and change his own for ever. The IRA bomb that exploded in their boat killed Knatchbull's grandfather Lord Mountbatten (cousin of the Queen), his grandmother Lady Brabourne, his twin brother Nicholas, and local teenager Paul Maxwell. In telling this story for the first time, Knatchbull is not only revisiting the terrible events he and his family lived through, but also writing an intensely personal account of human triumph over tragedy. For thirty years, Knatchbull has lived with the echoes of that day: the death of the twin from whom he had been inseparable; the loss of his adored grandparents, whose funerals along with his twin's he and his parents were too injured to attend; the recovery from physical wounds; and the emotional legacy that proved harder to endure. In From A Clear Blue Sky""Timothy Knatchbull delves into his past, present and future, and reveals a story of courage and fortitude as he, his family, and their English and Irish friends dealt with the shocking assassinations and their aftermath. Taking place in Ireland at the height of the Troubles, it gives a compelling insight into that period of Irish history. But more importantly it brings home that although tragedy can strike at any moment, the human spirit is able to recover and evolve over time. This book about truth and reconciliation, unflinching in its detail, asks searching questions about why human beings inflict misery on others, and holds lessons about how we can learn to forgive, to heal and to move on. It will resonate with readers the world over.

The City That Became Safe: New York's Lessons for Urban

The City That Became Safe: New York's Lessons for Urban

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Zimring, Franklin E., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, The 40% drop in crime that occurred across the U.S. from to largely remains an unsolved mystery. Even more puzzling then is the crime rate drop in New York City, which lasted twice long and was twice as large. This 80% drop in crime over nineteen years represents the largest crime decline on record. In The City that Became Safe, Franklin Zimring sets off in search of the New York difference through a detailed and comprehensive statistical investigation into the city's falling crime rates and possible explanations. If you listen to City Hall, aggressive police created a zero tolerance law enforcement regime that drove crime rates down. Is this self-serving political sound bite true? Are the official statistics generated by the police accurate? Zimring shows the numbers are correct and argues that some combination of more cops, new tactics, and new management can take some credit for the decline, but zero tolerance policing and quality of life were never a consistent part of the NYPD's strategy. That the police can make a difference in preventing crime overturns decades of conventional wisdom for criminologists, but Zimring points out the New York experience challenges the major assumptions dominating American crime and drug control policies that most everyone else has missed. First, imprisonment in actually New York decreased significantly from to and was well below the national average, proving that it is possible to have substantially less crime without increases in incarceration. Second, the NYPD sharply reduced drug violence (over 90%) without any reduction in hard drug use. In other words, they won the war on drug violence without winning the war on drugs. Finally, the stability of New York's population, economy, education, demographics, or immigration patterns calls into question the long-accepted cultural and structural causes of violence in America's cities. That high rates of crime are not hard wired into modern city life is welcome news for policy makers, criminal justice officials, and urban dwellers everywhere.

The Digital Photography Book: The Step-By-Step Secrets for

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kelby, Scott, PUBLISHER: Peachpit Press, Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book "The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, " now tackles the most important side of digital photography--how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think). This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here's how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK, ' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak." This isn't a book of theory-it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button. Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. There's never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look "OK," and if you're tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you. Not Becoming My Mother: And Other Things She Taught Me Along

Not Becoming My Mother: And Other Things She Taught Me Along

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Reichl, Ruth, PUBLISHER: Penguin Press, Bestselling author Ruth Reichl examines her mother's life, giving voice to the universal unarticulated truth that we are grateful not to be our mothers In "Not Becoming My Mother," bestselling author Ruth Reichl embarks on a clear-eyed, openhearted investigation of her mother's life, piecing together the journey of a woman she comes to realize she never really knew. Looking to her mother's letters and diaries, Reichl confronts the painful transition her mother made from a hopeful young woman to an increasingly unhappy older one and realizes the tremendous sacrifices she made to make sure her daughter's life would not be as disappointing as her own. Growing up in Cleveland, Miriam Brudno dreamed of becoming a doctor, like her father. But when she announced this, her parents said, "You're no beauty, and it's too bad you're such an intellectual. But if you become a doctor, no man will ever marry you." Instead, at twenty, Miriam opened a bookstore, a profession everyone agreed was suitably ladylike. She corresponded with authors all over the world, including philosophers such as Bertrand Russell, political figures such as Max Eastman, and novelists such as Christopher Marlowe. It was the happiest time of her life. Nearly thirty when she finally married, she fulfilled expectations, settled down, left her bookstore behind, and started a family. But conformity came at a tremendous cost. With labor-saving devices to aid in household chores, there was simply not enough to do to fill the days. Miriam-and most of her friends-were smart, educated women who were often bored, miserable, and silently rebellious. On what would have been Miriam's one hundredth birthday Reichl opens up her mother's diaries for the first time and encounters a whole new woman. This is a person she had never known. In this intimate study Reichl comes to understand the lessons of rebellion, independence, and self-acceptance that her mother-though unable to guide herself-succeeded in teaching her daughter.

The Spirit of Father Damien: The Leper Priest

The Spirit of Father Damien: The Leper Priest

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: De Volder, Jan / Steffen, John / Allen, John L., PUBLISHER: Ignatius Press, Father Damien, famous for his missionary work with exiled lepers on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, is finally Saint Damien. His sanctity took 120 years to become officially recognized, but between his death in and his canonization in --amid creeping secularization and suspicion of the missionary spirit he so much embodied--Fr. Damien De Veuster never faded from the world's memory. What kept him there? What keeps him there now? To find an answer, Belgian historian and journalist Jan De Volder sifted through Father Damien's personal correspondence as well as the Vatican archives. With careful and even-handed expertise, De Volder follows Father Damien's transformation from the stout, somewhat haughty missionary of his youth, bounding from Europe to Hawaii and straight into seemingly tireless priestly work, to the humble and loving shepherd of souls who eventually succumbed to the same disease that ravaged his flock. De Volder finds that--as spiritual father, caretaker, teacher, and advocate--Father Damien accomplished many heroic feats for these poor outcasts. Yet the greatest gift he gave them was their transformation from a disordered, lawless throng exiled in desperate anarchy into a living community built on Jesus Christ, a community in which they learned to care for one another. Every generation seems to have its own image of this world-famous priest. Already during his life on Molokai and at his death in , many considered him a holy man. Even today, in the highly secularized Western world, he is widely admired. In his native Belgium honored him with the title "the greatest Belgian" in polling conducted by their public broadcasting service. Statues honor his memory in the National Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and at the entrance to the Hawaiian State Capitol in Honolulu. In , in the presence of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Brussels, Belgium; and in Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Today Father Damien is the unofficial patron of outcasts and those afflicted with HIV/AIDS. "Illustrated with many photos." De Volder contends that the common thread running through the saint's life, the spirit of Father Damien that so speaks to the world, is at once uniquely Christian, fully human, and as important today as ever before.

The Weekend That Changed Wall Street: An Eyewitness Account

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bartiromo, Maria / Whitney, Catherine, PUBLISHER: Portfolio, A first-person account of the white-knuckle weekend that brought the financial world to its knees and changed Wall Street forever, from America's most famous business reporter. During a single historic weekend (September ) the fate of Lehman Brothers was sealed, Merrill Lynch barely survived, AIG became a ward of the federal government, and the roots of our seemingly strong economy teetered on the edge of collapse. As bankers and government officials scrambled to keep the economy from total collapse, and Americans tried to make sense of it all, top CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo spent the entire weekend taking frantic phone calls from the most powerful players on Wall Street and in Washington. Those CEOs, politicians, and dozens of other sources gave Bartiromo behind-the- scenes details on the crisis and its aftermath, the personalities involved, and the emotions at work during one of the most stressful periods in American economic history. Now she draws on her high-level network to provide an eyewitness account of the biggest events of the financial crisis, including exclusive interviews with former treasury secretary Henry Paulson, former AIG chairman Hank Greenberg, former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain, and former Bear Stearns chairman Ace Greenberg, among many others. Her sources candidly divulged personal and unreported information. For example, during a commercial break on her show, Paulson, who had been explaining the government bailout package, told her, "In six months, you will understand why we did what we did." It wasn't apparent then, but months later it was revealed that the government's secrecy regarding who got the bailout money was intended to hide the shocking financial condition of Citigroup-the largest bank in the world. Writing with both authority and dramatic flair, Bartiromo not only weaves a thrilling and fresh account of the events of that fateful weekend but provides a unique analysis of the crisis and its aftermath She shows how decades of unbridled risk taking led to one of the biggest and most dramatic economic meltdowns in history and tackles the big questions: is any company too big to fail-and if so should it be? Should the government spend taxpayer dollars to bail out companies whose plights are largely the result of their own mismanagement? And finally, what have we learned from this crisis? Will we return to business as usual or has Wall Street really changed?

Voices in Disability and Spirituality from the Land Down

Voices in Disability and Spirituality from the Land Down

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Newell, Christopher / Calder, Andy, PUBLISHER: Routledge, An excellent source of information and ideas on the relationship between disability and spirituality--and how to improve itThis one-of-a-kind collection explores the relationship between spirituality and disability from a variety of Australian religious and spiritual viewpoints. Authors from a wide range of backgrounds--some with disabilities, some without--draw remarkable insights from Christian, Jewish, Buddhist (and even non-religious) spirituality. These uniquely Australian perspectives provide practical and spiritual lessons that can be applied in any part of the world.Voices in Disability and Spirituality from the Land Down Under presents an unflinching look at the shortcomings of many established church ministries when it comes to serving people with disabilities. There's also an extraordinary interview with a severely disabled nonreligious woman in the final stage of her life and her caretaker, which presents a very revealing look at the essence of human spirituality as it exists even in the absence of religious dogma. In addition, you'll find a revealing case study focusing on the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA), which looks at the gap between its official theology and its actual policy and practice, and outlines a project designed to move the Church forward to more inclusive practices.Additionally, Voices in Disability and Spirituality from the Land Down Under: Outback to Outfront examines: why platitudes that are intended to give comfort, like "God has chosen this for you," "It's a test of your faith," or "We all have our crosses to carry" are at best problematic, and at worst damaging--with suggestions for pastoral responses that offer alternatives to "God-is-on-your-side" cliches the spiritual meaning and importance of community for people with disabilities, and the impact of community on their vitality and resiliency the Buddhist teaching called "sunyata, " or emptiness, and its potential to positively impact the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and those who know them wisdom contained in the ancient Jewish system of laws called "Halacha"--and its potential for empowering people with disabilities today how a pastoral care program that is flexible, accommodating, and relevant for disabled people was created at a small metropolitan school in New South Wales--and the effect of the program on the community the work of the Personal Advocacy Service, which recruits volunteers to be companions to people with intellectual disabilities the role of religion and philanthropy in the creation of educational programs for blind or vision-impaired students" and more"

Memory Offended: The Auschwitz Convent Controversy

Memory Offended: The Auschwitz Convent Controversy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Roth, John K. / Rittner, Carol A. / Rittner, Carol, PUBLISHER: Praeger Publishers, On August , a group of Polish Carmelite nuns, with the approval of both church and government authorities, but apparently without any dialogue with members of the Polish or international Jewish community, moved into a building at the site of Auschwitz I. This establishment of a Roman Catholic convent in what was once a storehouse for the poisonous Zyklon B used in the gas chambers of the Nazi extermination center has sparked intense controversy between Jews and Christians. Memory Offended is as definitive a survey of the Auschwitz convent controversy as could be hoped for. But even more important than its thorough chronological record of events pertinent to the dispute, is the book's use of this particular controversy as a departure for reflection on fundamental issues for Jews and Christians and their relationships with each other. Essays by fourteen distinguished international scholars who represent diverse viewpoints within their Jewish and Christian traditions identify, analyze, and comment on the long-range issues, questions, and implications at the heart of the controversy. A recent interview with the internationally renowned Holocaust authority and survivor, Elie Wiesel, makes an important contribution to the ongoing discussion. The volume merits careful reading by all who seek to learn the lessons this controversy can teach both Christians and Jews. In their introduction, editors Carol Rittner and John K. Roth define the meaning of the word covenant in both the Jewish and Christian religious traditions. They develop a compelling argument for the notion that the Christian concept of a "new" covenant between God and humanity, which supposedly superseded Judaism's "old"covenant, formed the basis for the centuries-old anti-Jewish contempt that led to Auschwitz--the Nazi death camp where 1.6 million human beings, mostly Jews, were exterminated. The editors contend that the existence of a convent at this site offended memory. The vital issue of what constitutes a fitting Auschwitz memorial is addressed throughout the volume's three major divisions in which important thinkers, including Robert McAfee Brown and Richard L. Rubenstein, among others, investigate "The History and Politics of Memory," "The Psychology of Memory," and "The Theology of Memory." Important tools for researchers are a chronology of events pertinent to the Auschwitz convent controversy, and an appendix that contains many key documents relating to the controversy. Memory Offended will be an important resource in university and public libraries as well as in Holocaust courses, classes on Jewish Studies, twentieth-century history, and those that focus on interreligious issues.

Machine Learning and Statistics: The Interface

Machine Learning and Statistics: The Interface

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nakhaeizadeh, Gholamreza / Taylor, C. C. / Nakhaeizadeh, G., PUBLISHER: Wiley-Interscience, The interface between statistics and machine learning (ML) is an increasingly popular research subject, as scientists and statisticians discover useful areas where these disciplines overlap. ML deals primarily with learning rules or structure, and while some books on the subject exist, this volume is the only one to integrate ML with statistics. It explores new areas where theory and methods can be shared and demonstrates the benefits to those working in either discipline. Written by leading experts in both fields, Machine Learning and Statistics is a result of the authors' participation in the European Conference in Machine Learning. This important collection of contributions was adapted from conference workshop material and reworked to address readers of diverse backgrounds and skills. For newcomers to the field, a thorough introduction surveys the various topics and supplies numerous references for further reading. The book's main focus is on classification, the most common area of intersection. The classification process uses information about a new example to assign the example to one of a known number of classes. Such methods typically involve a rule learned from an initial set of data, which is where ML comes into play. Other topics covered include prediction, control, and an introduction to methods of knowledge discovery in databases--a skill that has become especially relevant with the explosion in large-scale databases. Timely, practical, and innovative, this book offers a number of new algorithms and draws on real-world examples including financial and medical applications. It also includes two chapters on loans/credit applications that help identify bad risks and good customers--useful for those working with credit scoring and bad debt analysis. Machine Learning and Statistics is an invaluable resource for researchers involved with artificial intelligence and ML in academia, government, or industry, as well as those working with pattern recognition in statistical departments; for students at the graduate level who seek to expand their horizons; and for anyone who would like to learn more about these cutting-edge methodologies. The first book to explore the theory, methods, and applications of the relationship between machine learning and statistics. Here is the first book to address the growing demand for applications that integrate machine learning and statistics. The only text to focus on the interface between the two disciplines, this volume explores a mutually beneficial relationship that is fast becoming recognized by scientists, engineers, and researchers in data analysis and intelligent systems worldwide. The book shows that machine learning shares several areas of common research with statistics, most notably classification, prediction, and control. It demonstrates that statistical and probability methodologies can be applied in developing different machine learning algorithms and that these algorithms can

Regret: The Persistence of the Possible

Regret: The Persistence of the Possible

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Landman, Janet, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, "We are a people who do not want to keep much of the past in our heads," Lillian Hellman once wrote. "It is considered unhealthy in America to remember mistakes, neurotic to think about them, psychotic to dwell upon them." Yet who in their lifetime has never regretted a lost love, a missed opportunity, a path not taken? Indeed, regret is perhaps a universal experience, but while poets and novelists have long explored its complexities, very little has been written from a scholarly perspective that examines this emotion. Now, in Regret, Janet Landman takes a lively and perceptive look at this multifaceted phenomenon. Much as Anthony Storr did in his best-selling Solitude, Landman here provides an insightful anatomy of an emotion, ranging far and wide to illuminate the nature of regret--what it is, how it changes you, how you experience it. She draws on a breathtaking variety of sources, ranging from psychology, economics, philosophy, and anthropology, to classic works of literature. We learn what people regret most--lack of education comes first, followed by employment, marriage, and children--and how regret differs from other emotions, such as remorse, disappointment, sadness, or guilt. In one of the most fascinating sections, Landman examines four "worldviews" of regret--the Romantic, the Tragic, the Comic, and the Ironic--as exemplified in four major novels: Great Expectations, Notes From Underground, The Ambassadors, and Mrs. Dalloway. In Dostoevsky, for instance, regret is a "poison of unfulfilled desires turned inward," destructive, incurable. Though it is common to regard regret as painful and destructive--being "stuck in the past" or "ruled by emotions"--Landman reveals some surprising benefits. At best regret is a dynamic changing process--one can transcend regret, and thus transform the self. In Anne Tyler's Breathing Lessons, for example, we witness how the characters Ira and Maggie Moran find themselves ready to move forward in their relationship only after they have accepted life's limits and losses without resignation or despair. "It is a good thing," Landman writes, "that the human mind is not limited by what actually exists, but works in such a way that it draws comparisons between what happens and what might have happened. It is in this ability to imagine alternatives, and the capacity to care about the particularities of experience, that we accomplish the task of becoming fully human." For anyone who has ever questioned, experienced, or avoided regret, here is a provocative and challenging look at this enduring emotion.
