Critical Pedagogy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kanpol, Barry, PUBLISHER: Praeger, Critical pedagogy refers to the means and methods of testing and attempting to change the structures of schools that allow inequities. Violence and Culture in the Antebellum South

Violence and Culture in the Antebellum South

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bruce, Jr. Dickson D. / Bruce, Dickson D., PUBLISHER: University of Texas Press, This provocative book draws from a variety of sources--literature, politics, folklore, social history--to attempt to set Southern beliefs about violence in a cultural context. According to Dickson D. Bruce, the control of violence was a central concern of antebellum Southerners. Using contemporary sources, Bruce describes Southerners' attitudes as illustrated in their duels, hunting, and the rhetoric of their politicians. He views antebellum Southerners as pessimistic and deeply distrustful of social relationships and demonstrates how this world view impelled their reliance on formal controls to regularize human interaction. The attitudes toward violence of masters, slaves, and "plain-folk"--the three major social groups of the period--are differentiated, and letters and family papers are used to illustrate how Southern child-rearing practices contributed to attitudes toward violence in the region. The final chapter treats Edgar Allan Poe as a writer who epitomized the attitudes of many Southerners before the Civil War.

H.G. Bronn, Ernst Haeckel, and the Origins of German

H.G. Bronn, Ernst Haeckel, and the Origins of German

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gliboff, Sander, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The German translation of Darwin's "The Origin of Species" appeared in , just months after the original, thanks to Heinrich Georg Bronn, a distinguished German paleontologist whose work in some ways paralleled Darwin's. Bronn's version of the book (with his own notes and commentary appended) did much to determine how Darwin's theory was understood and applied by German biologists, for the translation process involved more than the mere substitution of German words for English. In this book, Sander Gliboff tells the story of how "The Origin of Species" came to be translated into German, how it served Bronn's purposes as well as Darwin's, and how it challenged German scholars to think in new ways about morphology, systematics, paleontology, and other biological disciplines. Gliboff traces Bronn's influence on German Darwinism through the early career of Ernst Haeckel, Darwin's most famous nineteenth-century proponent and popularizer in Germany, who learned his Darwinism from the Bronn translation. Gliboff argues, contrary to most interpretations, that the German authors were not attempting to "tame" Darwin or assimilate him to outmoded systems of romantic "Naturphilosophie." Rather, Bronn and Haeckel were participants in Darwin's project of revolutionizing biology. We should not, Gliboff cautions, read pre-Darwinian meanings into Bronn's and Haeckel's Darwinian words. Gliboff describes interpretive problems faced by Bronn and Haeckel that range from the verbal (how to express Darwin's ideas in the existing German technical vocabulary) to the conceptual. One of these conceptual problems, the origins of novel variation and the proper balance between creativity and constraint in evolution, emerges as crucial. Specialists in evolutionary biology today, Gliboff points out, continue to grapple with comparable questions--continuing a larger process of translation and interpretation of Darwin's work.

China and the Global Political Economy

China and the Global Political Economy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Breslin, Shaun, PUBLISHER: Palgrave MacMillan, In a relatively short period, the growth of investment to China and the resulting increase in Chinese trade has resulted in a reconfiguration of the East Asian regional economy, and is now altering financial and resource flows across the globe. This book explains how this transformation has come about, focusing on the interplay between domestic politics in China and the transition from socialism on one hand, and the ongoing evolution of global or transnational production networks on the other. It shows that while events in China have considerable global significance, this importance does not necessarily equate with the "power" that some already ascribe to China. Whilst recognizing that global economic integration has contributed to the reduction of poverty, it also shows how it has contributed to the emergence of new social cleavages and the changing basis of communist party rule.

By analysing writings of 'the Jeffersonian Circle, ' Boorstin explores concepts of God, nature, equality, toleration, education and government in order to illuminate their underlying world view. "The Lost World of Thomas Jefferson" demonstrates why on the 250th anniversary of his birth, this American leader's message has remained relevant to our national crises and grand concerns. "The volume is too subtle, too rich in ideas for anyone to do justice to it in brief summary, too heavily documented and too carefully wrought for anyone to dismiss its thesis.... Consuming Power: A Social History of American Energies

Consuming Power: A Social History of American Energies

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nye, David E., PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), How did the United States become the world's largest consumer of energy? David Nye shows that this is less a question about the development of technology than it is a question about the development of culture. In Consuming Power Nye uses energy as a touchstone to examine the lives of ordinary people engaged in normal activities. He looks at how these activities changed as new energy systems were constructed, from colonial times to recent years. He also shows how, as Americans incorporated new machines and processes into their lives, they became ensnared in power systems that were not easily changed: they made choices about the conduct of their lives, and those choices accumulated to produce a consuming culture. Nye examines a sequence of large systems that acquired and then lost technological momentum over the course of American history, including water power, steam power, electricity, the internal-combustion engine, atomic power, and computerization. He shows how each system became part of a larger set of social constructions through its links to the home, the factory, and the city. The result is a social history of America as seen through the lens of energy consumption.
