The Democratization Project: Opportunities and Challenges

The Democratization Project: Opportunities and Challenges

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Swain, Ashok / Amer, Ramses / Ojendal, Joakim, PUBLISHER: Anthem Press, Democratization is a field where unexpected and sudden events have repeatedly challenged conventional wisdom. For example, who in the mid-s would have foreseen the democratization of Cambodia, Albania, South Africa or East Timor? Our current 'wave' of democratization is complex and diverse and understanding it requires a variety of theoretical approaches. Most of the literature on democracy assumes that it is the best form of government. Theoretical works on democratic transition and democratization have also emphasized the internal conflict resolution capacity of democracy. It has been reasoned that democracy reduces the likelihood of discrimination, especially of ethno-political minorities, and thus the possibility of political repression. However, the democratic peace theory has not been explicitly tested with reference to third world post-colonial states, where most internal violent conflicts take place. Certainly, there is a dearth of practical advice for policy makers on how to design and implement democratic levers that can make internal peace and stability endure in the South. This volume, drawing on the work of a variety of scholars, will contribute to identifying and understanding the challenges and opportunities of this 'democratization project' to the peace and development of the world both at the domestic level in selected countries, trends in regions of the world, and in the global system of the post-Cold War Era.

Trade and Environment: Conflict or Compatibility

Trade and Environment: Conflict or Compatibility

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brack, Duncan, PUBLISHER: Earthscan Publications, Global trading and environmental regimes are increasingly coming into conflict. The membership of the WTO is expanding and the GATT rules are becoming ever more wide-ranging. At the same time, international environmental treaties are rapidly evolving and national environmental legislation is developing in response to growing problems of pollution and resource depletion. The international framework needed to resolve conflicts between trading and environmental regimes is largely absent. This book, the proceedings of a recent conference, addresses these questions: What is the real evidence for trade-environment disputes? What are the key issues for the industry? How does the new WTO dispute settlement procedure operate in practice, and how has the EU managed to resolve similar conflicts? What does the future hold?

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Philbrick, Nathaniel, PUBLISHER: Penguin Books, The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In , the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with twenty crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, disease, and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival. Nathaniel Philbrick uses little-known documents-including a long-lost account written by the ship's cabin boy-and penetrating details about whaling and the Nantucket community to reveal the chilling events surrounding this epic maritime disaster. An intense and mesmerizing read, In the Heart of the Sea is a monumental work of history forever placing the Essex tragedy in the American historical canon.

Greening Aid?: Understanding the Environmental Impact of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hicks, Robert L. / Parks, Bradley C. / Roberts, J. Timmons, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Every year, billions of dollars of environmental aid flow from the rich governments of the North to the poor governments of the South. Why do donors provide this aid? What do they seek to achieve? How effective is the aid given? And does it always go to the places of greatest environmental need? From the first Earth Summit in Stockholm in to the G8 Gleneagles meeting in , the issue of the impact of aid on the global environment has been the subject of vigorous protest and debate. How much progress has there been in improving environmental protection and clean-up in the developing world? What explains the patterns of environmental aid spending and distribution - is it designed to address real problems, achieve geopolitical or commercial gains abroad, or buy political mileage at home? And what are the consequences for the estimated 4 million people that die each year from air pollution, unsafe drinking water, and lack of sanitation? All of these questions and many more are addressed in this groundbreaking text, which is based on the authors' work compiling the most comprehensive dataset of foreign aid ever assembled. By evaluating the likely environment impact of over development projects by more than 50 donors to over 170 recipient nations between and , Greening Aid represents a unique, state of the art picture of what is happening in foreign assistance, and its impact on the environment. Greening Aid explains major trends and shifts over the last three decades, ranks donors according to their performance, and offers case studies which compare and contrast donors and types of environmental aid.

Economic Stabilization and Debt in Developing Countries

Economic Stabilization and Debt in Developing Countries

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cooper, Richard N., PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Drawing on preliminary results from a massive study conducted by the World Bank to probe the links between stabilization and growth, Cooper examines the experience of developing countries faced by the oil shocks of the s and the debt crisis of the s. He points out that a global slowdown in growth has shifted the main economic concern in developing countries from long-term growth to stabilization and adjustment. Cooper takes into account the cross-country variables that influence the degree to which a country is affected negatively or positively by external shocks and covers such topics as political organization and external debt resolution. The first chapter focuses on countries that experienced adverse shocks from the sharp increase in oil prices beginning in . It also addresses countries that should have benefited from the oil price increase, and from a comparable increase in coffee prices, for which events turned out to be less favorable than they seemed. The second chapter analyzes the "disabsorption" a country faces when it can no longer rely on foreign lending or advantageous terms of trade; it also looks at inflationary pressures and at the role of the International Monetary Fund in designing stabilization programs for its member countries. The third chapter discusses the main influences on a country's economic performance and also discusses the lessons offered for successful stabilization and long-term growth. Moving from individual developing nations to the world economic system, the final two chapters examine the question of external debt and why it has proved to be such an international stumbling block, offering suggestions on how it might be resolved.

A Question of Balance: The President, the Congress and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mann, Thomas E., PUBLISHER: Brookings Institution Press, In recent years, a more active and aggressive Congress has often sharply disagreed with the president over the ends and means of American foreign policy. The normal tensions that arise in the U.S. system of separate institutions sharing power have been exacerbated by the contemporary pattern of split-party control of the two branches. The ensuing conflict in areas ranging from Central America to China has stimulated a spirited debate about the constitutional authority and institutional competence of the president and Congress to make foreign policy. In this volume, noted authors, led by Thomas Mann, examine executive-legislative relations in five major policy areas: war powers, intelligence, arms control, diplomacy, and trade. They offer a fresh analysis of the sources and consequences of conflict between the President and Congress as well as constructive suggestions for strengthening each branch's comparative advantages.

Redefining Southern Culture: Mind and Identity in the Modern

Redefining Southern Culture: Mind and Identity in the Modern

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cobb, James C., PUBLISHER: University of Georgia Press, From the creation of the first "New South" in the wake of Appomattox to the current struggles over the Confederate flag, Redefining Southern Culture surveys the remarkable story of southern identity and its persistence in the face of sweeping changes in the South's economy, society; and political structure. Rejecting the conventional continuity-versus-change framework, James C. Cobb instead illustrates how the evolution of southern culture synthesized these two forces in recent years. Throughout this lively and engaging volume, Cobb examines southern identity in its constantly changing forms, from history and literature to blues and country music to popular and consumer cultures. Cobb also presents the first detailed account of the efforts of African Americans in the South to reclaim their identity as southerners and to construct their own symbolic and substantive representations of what that identity means. The essays in Redefining Southern Culture reflect James C. Cobb's career-long interest in exploring southern cultural identity and the interaction of this identity with the economic, social, and political forces that have transformed the region. Written in a refreshingly straightforward and engaging style, this book promises thoughtful reading for anyone interested in the modern South and will be a valuable resource for courses in southern history and culture.

The end of the Cold War brought about renewed optimism for the future of the United Nations. However, with the dawn of the new century the future of the United Nations remained uncertain. The future of the UN appeared to rest in the organizationas ability to address the threat of terrorism, world hunger and the need to restructure the United Nations to overcome the image of an organization that can accomplish little but talk.

An Appeal to Reason: A Cool Look at Global Warming

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lawson, Nigel, PUBLISHER: Gerald Duckworth & Co Ltd, "Clear, analytical and compelling." -"The Economist" In this well-informed and hard-hitting response to the scaremongering of the climate alarmists, Nigel Lawson, former Secretary of State for Energy under Margaret Thatcher, argues that it is time for us to take a cool look at global warming. Lawson carefully and succinctly examines all aspects of the global warming issue: the science, the economics, the politics, and the ethics. He concludes that the conventional wisdom on the subject is suspect on a number of grounds, that global warming is not the devastating threat to the planet it is widely alleged to be, and that the remedy that is currently being proposed, which is in any event politically unattainable, would be worse that the threat it is supposed to avert. Argued with logic, common sense, and even wit, and thoroughly sourced and referenced, Lawson has written a long overdue corrective to the barrage of spin and hype to which the politicians and media have been subjecting the public on this important issue.
