Seabirds and Other Marine Vertebrates

Seabirds and Other Marine Vertebrates

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Burger, Joanna, PUBLISHER: Columbia University Press, Many marine biologists have concentrated on the species approach to the study of marine vertebrates. Although it has long been recognized that species interact, it has been far easier to study that interaction from the viewpoint of only one of the participants. Recently biologists have tried to study interactions from the viewpoint of all participants. Because of the high visibility of birds, it is easy to observe their interactions with other vertebrates such as fish, porpoises, and whales, but it is difficult to obtain quantitative data on their interactions. "Seabirds and Other Marine Vertebrates," the only comprehensive examination of its kind, fills a particular niche: that of pulling together in one place the exciting current work in marine species interactions between seabirds and other marine vertebrates. The majority of essays in this work are structured to include a balance between literature review, original data, and synthesis. They concern obvious aspects of predation, competition, and commensalism. These topics relate directly to food acquisition and survival in a marine environment, and provide paradigms for the future study of marine birds and other organisms. Since man's encroachment in coastal and pelagic environments is increasing and poses a threat to marine birds, a volume elucidating various aspects of their interactions has multiple uses. As well as being of value to ornithologist, this work should be useful to other vertebrate biologists, behaviorists, ecologists and managers involved with coastal planning. It is a forerunner of things to come in marine biology.

The Perfect Fruit: Good Breeding, Bad Seeds, and the Hunt

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brantley, Chip, PUBLISHER: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, The creation story of the "perfect fruit," delving into the world of the demanding farmers, brilliant obsessives, and food fanatics who create the fruits we love. Is it possible to create the perfect piece of fruit--a fruit that cannot be improved upon? Since the dawn of agriculture, people have been obsessively tinkering to develop fruits that are hardier, prettier, and better tasting. Today, consumers have sophisticated palates and unparalleled access to the best fruits from around the world, and many of them believe that in California's San Joaquin Valley, a fruit breeder may have developed the perfect fruit: a sweet, juicy, luscious plum-apricot hybrid known as a pluot. In "The Perfect Fruit," Chip Brantley goes in search of what it takes to trick nature into producing gustatory greatness--and to bring it to a market near you. The story begins with Floyd Zaiger, a humble and wily octogenarian who is arguably the greatest fruit breeder in the world. From there, it stretches both back and forward: back through a long line of visionaries, fruit smugglers, and mad geniuses, many of whom have been driven to dazzling extremes in the pursuit of exotic flavors; and forward through the ranks of farmers, scientists, and salesmen who make it their life's work to coax deliciousness out of stubborn and unpredictable plants. The result is part biography, part cultural history, and part horticultural inquest--a meditation on the surprising power of food to change the way we live.

Brush Your Teeth! and Other Simple Ways to Stay Young and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ostreicher, David, PUBLISHER: Wheatmark, It has probably been some time since your mom last reminded you to brush your teeth or wash your hands. Yet, that advice was priceless then and even more valuable now These days, we are constantly reminded of threats to our health and the well-being of our children. They include preservatives, artificial additives, air and water pollution and drug resistant viruses, just to name a few. Thanks to advances in technology, more information than ever is available to us, but with so many sources offering advice, it often leads to confusing and contradictory suggestions about maintaining optimum health. As a result, it is easy to lose track of what the real perils are. For example: Which is the best way to prevent colds and flu: "Washing your hands or taking vitamin C?" Which is the best way a pregnant woman can avoid having a low birth weight infant: "Eating all natural foods or brushing her teeth?" Which is more likely to kill you: "A diet high in natural fats or a diet high in additives?" The answers to these questions may really surprise you. Thats because the American public has been misdirected. We have substituted myths, snake oil and false advertising for basic good sense and physical hygiene. This book is a refreshing and easy-to-use guide for being naturally healthy and happy again.

Pacific Arcadia: Images of California,

Pacific Arcadia: Images of California,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Perry, Claire, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Since the arrival of the Spanish explorers in the sixteenth century, California has been thought of as a land of promise and opportunity. This lavishly illustrated catalog, which is to accompany a major exhibit opening in April at Stanford's Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts and traveling subsequently to two other museums, presents a fascinating cultural history of an idyllic vision of California that still figures prominently in the American imagination. Brought together in one show for the first time, this combination of art is unique in its range from high art to popular representations. Currier and Ives lithographs and the work of early European cartographers are juxtaposed with photographs by Carleton E. Watkins, Arnold Genthe, and Eadweard Muybridge, and paintings by Albert Bierstadt, James Walker, and William Hahn, among others. With one hundred and fifty plates--sixty in full color--Pacific Arcadia illuminates the imagery of the California Dream. Perry investigates how and why this vision of a Pacific paradise was developed and marketed to the public, taking as her subject the images produced by early visitors and residents confronted by the peculiarities of California's landscape, the abundance of its natural resources, and the omnipresence of the vast Pacific. Using paintings, drawings, maps, photographs, newspaper and book illustrations, and printed ephemera dating from the seventeenth century to , Pacific Arcadia examines the ways these images represented California as a place where economic bliss could be attained in a spectacular natural setting.

Technology and Society: A Canadian Perspective, Second

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Goyder, John, PUBLISHER: University of Toronto Press, Since the publication of the first edition of "Technology and Society: A Canadian Perspective "in , awareness of the pervasive effects of new and emerging technologies on our lives is, if anything, even more pronounced. New and emerging technologies in everything from health care to communication and the Internet hold enormous promise. However, the more ominous consequences of technology are also very much with us?from environmental degradation to uncertainty in the workplace in a post "dot.com" economy to terrorism and warfare. "Technology and Society, "second edition, continues the rich tradition of Canadian writing on technology found in the work of Harold Innis, Marshall McLuhan, George Grant, Ursula Franklin, and others. Like the first edition, the book begins and ends with an attempt to understand Grant's insistence that technology is a "fate," connected, in the anthropological sense, with the evolution of societies. In between, the book examines the social and historical foundation for the development and diffusion of technology in the Canadian context. The first three chapters define the phenomenon of technology by classifying the vast array of tools and techniques. They offer a conceptual scheme for understanding the interrelationship between society and technology and for the diffusion of technologies. Subsequent chapters shift to looking at the consequences of technology. The linkage between technology and economic development is explored, as is the significance of a technocratic value system. The relationship between work and technology?the significance of "automation," of a "branch plant" economy, "R&D," and communication?is examined. The final chapters consider new leading technologies such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology, as well as public attitudes towards technology.

Since his Oscar nomination, Joaquin Phoenix has risen to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars. Yet in October , during an interview to promote the critically acclaimed "Two Lovers," Phoenix made the shocking announcement that he was to retire from acting, declining any future film roles in a bid to reinvent himself as a hip hop artist. The resulting documentary, "I'm Still Here," turned out to be one of the most extraordinary and memorable pieces of performance art ever committed to film. Born in , Phoenix was a natural performer from an early age, regularly busking on the streets of New York City with his multitalented siblings. Following in the footsteps of his older brother River, Joaquin decided on a career in acting, and his breakthrough performance alongside Nicole Kidman in "To Die For "confirmed him as the most intriguing actor of his generation. Archaeology, Language, and History: Essays on Culture and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Terrell, John Edward, PUBLISHER: Praeger, Ever since Darwin, the world has been struggling with the mystery of human diversity. As the historian Peter Bowler has written, "an evolutionary interpretation of the history of life on the earth must inevitably extend itself to include the origins of the human race." But this has proved to be a difficult and controversial task. Understanding human origins means accounting not only for the obvious differences between people and cultures around the world, but also for the unity of Homo sapiens as a single biological species. As Stephen Jay Gould has said, "flexibility is the hallmark of human evolution." Because so much of who we are is learned rather than genetically predetermined, a satisfactory understanding of human evolution--to use old parlance--must account both for the human body and the human soul. At any single moment of time, it is always possible to find instances where people seem to live in their own world, speak in their own distinctive ways, and have their own exclusive cultural traits and practices. Over the course of time, however, it is not so easy to find places where these dimensions of our diversity stay together. The essays in this collection show why we must stop thinking that "race," language, and culture go together, and why we should be wary of the commonsense beliefs that human races exist and that people who speak different languages come from fundamentally different biological lineages.

International Organizations, Constitutional Law, and Human

International Organizations, Constitutional Law, and Human

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gibson, John Schuyler / Gibson, John S., PUBLISHER: Praeger Publishers, Since World War II, remarkable progress has been made toward establishing more effective international laws and organizations to reduce opportunities for confrontation and conflict, and to enhance the pursuit of security and well-being. This book offers a detailed record of that progress, as well as its meaning for our times and those ahead. Taking a historical, theoretical, and case-study approach, John Gibson provides the reader with a broad understanding of how international organizations evolved to serve the interests of their member states, how the constitutional charters of organizations provide a coherent statement of goals and means to goals, and how these organizations are assuming increasing authority in the international system. The work traces the progression of international constitutional and human rights law, with an emphasis on the past 45 years. In the first part, Gibson discusses the historic processes of political relations and mutual reliance; the evolution of these patterns through World War II; the subsequent history of the United Nations; the prime goals of international constitutional law; and the organizations' range of authority--from the high state to the supra-organization level. Part two offers a case study of the progression of international human rights law. Separate chapters trace the history of human rights in religion and philosophy and the role of the state in international law, while the concluding chapter on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights demonstrates how organizations actually function. This book will be a valuable resource for courses in international relations and international law, as well as an important addition to academic andprofessional libraries.

Silence and Freedom

Silence and Freedom

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Seidman, Louis Michael, PUBLISHER: Stanford University Press, "You have the right to remain silent." These words, drawn from the Supreme Court's famous decision in "Miranda v. Arizona," have had a tremendous impact on the public imagination. But what a strange right this is. Of all the activities that are especially worthy of protection, that define us as human beings, foster human potential, and symbolize human ambition, why privilege silence? This thoughtful and iconoclastic book argues that silence can be an expression of freedom. A defiant silence demonstrates determination, courage, and will. Martyrs from a variety of faith traditions have given up their lives rather than renounce their god. During the Vietnam era, thousands of anonymous draft resisters refused to take the military oath that was a prelude to participating in what they believed was an immoral war. These silences speak to us. They are a manifestation of connection, commitment, and meaning. This link between silence and freedom is apparent in a variety of different contexts, which Seidman examines individually, including silence and apology, silence and self-incrimination, silence and interrogation, silence and torture, and silence and death. In discussing the problem of apology, for example, the author argues that although apology plays a crucial role in maintaining the illusion of human connection, the right to not apologize is equally crucial. Similarly, prohibition against torture--so prominent in national debate since the events of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib--is best understood as a right to silence, essential in preserving the distinction between mind and body on which human freedom depends. Protein Conformation - No. 161

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ciba Foundation / Caba Foundation, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Protein Conformation Chairman: F.M. Richards One of the major unsolved problems in biology and chemistry is how the amino acid sequence of a protein determines its three-dimensional structure, yet this structure is fundamental to the functioning and mechanism of action of enzymes, channels and receptors. Since the pioneering modelling work of Pauling in the s and the X-ray structure determinations by Kendrew and Perutz in the s, much structural information on proteins has been amassed. Several hundred protein structures have now been solved by X-ray crystallography and, more recently, NMR spectroscopy has had a significant impact on the study of structures of small proteins in solution. In this book, contributions from experts in the fields of X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, molecular modelling and protein engineering provide insight into current views on the protein folding problem and point to avenues for future progress. The use of molecular dynamics simulations to provide information about protein structure, dynamics and stability, and about protein-- protein interactions, is discussed. Fixing the Sky: The Checkered History of Weather and Climate

Fixing the Sky: The Checkered History of Weather and Climate

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fleming, James Rodger, PUBLISHER: Columbia University Press, As alarm over global warming spreads, a radical idea is gaining momentum. Forget cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, some scientists argue. Instead, bounce sunlight back into space by pumping reflective nanoparticles into the atmosphere. Launch mirrors into orbit around the Earth. Make clouds thicker and brighter to create a "planetary thermostat." These ideas might sound like science fiction, but in fact they are part of a very old story. For more than a century, scientists, soldiers, and charlatans have tried to manipulate weather and climate, and like them, today's climate engineers wildly exaggerate what is possible. Scarcely considering the political, military, and ethical implications of managing the world's climate, these individuals hatch schemes with potential consequences that far outweigh anything their predecessors might have faced. Showing what can happen when fixing the sky becomes a dangerous experiment in pseudoscience, James Rodger Fleming traces the tragicomic history of the rainmakers, rain fakers, weather warriors, and climate engineers who have been both full of ideas and full of themselves. Weaving together stories from elite science, cutting-edge technology, and popular culture, Fleming examines issues of health and navigation in the s, drought in the s, aircraft safety in the s, and world conflict since the s. Killer hurricanes, ozone depletion, and global warming fuel the fantasies of today. Based on archival and primary research, Fleming's original story speaks to anyone who has a stake in sustaining the planet.

The Real American Dream: A Meditation on Hope

The Real American Dream: A Meditation on Hope

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Delbanco, Andrew, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, Since we discovered that, in Tocqueville's words, "the incomplete joys of this world will never satisfy the heart," how have we Americans made do? In "The Real American Dream" one of the nation's premier literary scholars searches out the symbols and stories by which Americans have reached for something beyond worldly desire. A spiritual history ranging from the first English settlements to the present day, the book is also a lively, deeply learned meditation on hope. Andrew Delbanco tells of the stringent God of Protestant Christianity, who exerted immense force over the language, institutions, and customs of the culture for nearly 200 years. He describes the falling away of this God and the rise of the idea of a sacred nation-state. And, finally, he speaks of our own moment, when symbols of nationalism are in decline, leaving us with nothing to satisfy the longing for transcendence once sustained by God and nation. From the Christian story that expressed the earliest Puritan yearnings to New Age spirituality, apocalyptic environmentalism, and the multicultural search for ancestral roots that divert our own, "The Real American Dream" evokes the tidal rhythm of American history. It shows how Americans have organized their days and ordered their lives--and ultimately created a culture--to make sense of the pain, desire, pleasure, and fear that are the stuff of human experience. In a time of cultural crisis, when the old stories seem to be faltering, this book offers a lesson in the painstaking remaking of the American dream.

Contemporary German Youth and Their Elders: A Generational

Contemporary German Youth and Their Elders: A Generational

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Watts, Meredith W. / Fischer, Arthur / Fuchs, Werner, PUBLISHER: Praeger, Systematic research on the changing experience and social and political characteristics of German youth has been carried out in the Federal Republic of Germany on an ongoing basis since the early s. Until now, however, the results of these long-term studies have not been made available in English. Six volumes of this research--including new analyses prepared especially for this book--are distilled in the present work, which offers a comprehensive and focused portrait of German youth of succeeding postwar generations from to the present. Following an introductory survey of the scope and themes addressed in the study, the authors highlight the contrasting experiences of youth of the s and those who came of age soon after the end of World War II. They examine the fundamental constituents of youth as a developmental period, with particular reference to changes in the recent era. Attitudinal scales are developed and applied to assessments of variations in social and political orientation among generations and between distinct subgroups of contemporary youth. Differences between young women in the early postwar period and the "alternative era" of the s and s are explored. Focusing on "views of the future," the final chapter looks at the diversity of lifestyles that has become characteristic of youth over the last decade and at the increasing differentiation between generations. Providng a wealth of new material on an important body of research, this book makes a substantial contribution to the study of youth in advanced industrialized nations. An appropriate resource for courses or studies in various disciplines in sociology, geography, political science, and socialhistory.

Ethiopia: The Last Two Frontiers

Ethiopia: The Last Two Frontiers

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Markakis, John, PUBLISHER: James Currey, Provides the gist of one scholar's knowledge of this country acquired over several decades. The author of numerous works on Ethiopia, Markakis presents here an overarching, concise historical profile of a momentous effort to integrate a multicultural empire into a modern nation state. The concept of nation state formation provides the analytical framework within which this process unfolds and the changes of direction it takes under different regimes, as well as a standard for assessing its progress and shortcomings at each stage. Over a century old, the process is still far from completion and its ultimate success is far from certain. In the author's view, there are two major obstacles that need to be overcome, two frontiers that need to be crossed to reach the desired goal. The first is the monopoly of power inherited from the empire builders and zealously guarded ever since by a ruling class of Abyssinian origin. The descendants of the people subjugated by the empire builders remain excluded from power, a handicap that breeds political instability and violent conflict. The second frontier is the arid lowlands on the margins of the state, where the process of integration has not yet reached, and where resistance to it is greatest. Until this frontier is crossed, the Ethiopian state will not have the secure borders that a mature nation state requires. John Markakis is a political historian who has devoted a professional lifetime to the study of Ethiopia and its neighbors in the Horn of Africa. He has published several books and many articles on this area.
