Selling Seattle: Representing Contemporary Urban America

Selling Seattle: Representing Contemporary Urban America

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lyons, James, PUBLISHER: Wallflower Press, Starbucks, Microsoft, Amazon.com, World Trade Organization, the grunge music of such groups as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden -- all are synonymous with Seattle, Washington, as well as ubiquitous symbols of American culture. "Selling Seattle" is the first book to examine the impact of this city on contemporary culture and to account for the city's rapid rise to fame and influence over the last decade. Relying on current debates in various disciplines -- from urban geography and interrogations of economic and cultural globalization to cinema and media studies -- James Lyons looks closely at the city's representation in film, television, journalism, and literature to show how it became a symbol of urban desire and fantasy in the s. Seattle's rise to prominence can be understood within the context of the city's fluctuating fortunes throughout its history. The Yukon gold rush of made the city an economic center, yet the aftermath of World War I and America's first general strike left the city in economic stagnation. Though it was a mixed success, the World's Fair endowed Seattle with a heightened profile, including those new icons of urban legibility, the Monorail and the Space Needle. Then grunge music on the one hand and such high-profile films as "Sleepless in Seattle" () and "Disclosure" () on the other, while sending seemingly contradictory messages, successfully sold the city as a vibrant, trend-setting urban locale. Such an unpredictable history, coupled with widescale economic and social restructuring in America's urban centers, underscores Lyons'argument that Seattle's ascent islinked to anxieties about the fate of the contemporary American city. From the land of opportunity to no-man's-land to media darling and urban mecca, Seattle is at once the quintessential American city and a city like no other. "Selling Seattle" is an eye-opening exploration for anyone seeking to understand the contemporary American city and the powerful trends that shape the urban landscape and its place in the popular imagination.

The Moral Dynamics of Economic Life: An Extension and

The Moral Dynamics of Economic Life: An Extension and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Finn, Daniel K., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Caritas in veritate (Charity in Truth) is the ''social'' encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI, one of many papal encyclicals over the last 120 years that address economic life. This volume, based on discussions at a symposium co-sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies and the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, analyzes the situation of the Church and the theological basis for Benedict's thinking about the person, community, and the globalized economy. The Moral Dynamics of Economic Life engages Benedict's analysis of ''relation, '' the characteristics of contemporary social and economic relationships and the implications of a relational, Trinitarian God for daily human life. Crucial here is the Pope's notion of ''reciprocity, '' an economic relationship characterized by help freely given, but which forms an expectation that the recipient will ''reciprocate, '' either to the donor or, often, to someone else. This ''logic of gift, '' Benedict argues, should influence daily economic life, especially within what he calls ''hybrid'' firms, which make a profit and invest a share of that profit in service to needs outside the firm. Similarly, development - whether of an individual or of a nation - must be integral, neither simply economic nor personal nor psychological nor spiritual, but a comprehensive development that engages all dimensions of a flourishing human life. The essays, written by social scientists, theologians, policy analysts and others, engage, extend, and critique Benedict's views on these issues, as well as his call for deeper dialogue and a morally based transformation of social and economic structures.

Making Economic Policy Work: An Assessment of the National

Making Economic Policy Work: An Assessment of the National

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Juster, Kenneth I. / Lazarus, Simon, PUBLISHER: Brookings Institution Press, One of President Clinton's first steps after his election in was to create the National Economic Council to integrate and coordinate his administration's economic policies. This new body was given a broad charter to address both international and domestic economic policy. Evidence of its importance was its location in the White House and the appointment of the assistant to the president for economic affairs as its head. Now that the NEC has been in operation for four years and a second Clinton administration is about to begin, the time seems ripe for an assessment of the council's usefulness and performance. Kenneth I. Juster and Simon Lazarus, who have served in Republican and Democratic administrations, undertook this evaluation for Brookings. They interviewed more than sixty senior officials from the Clinton administration and seven predecessor administrations, including two former presidents, in order to obtain a comparative perspective on how each occupant of the White House has established mechanisms for developing economic policy. Juster and Lazarus conclude that the NEC has served President Clinton well, but that it is still a fragile experiment that needs further institutionalization. They offer several recommendations for its improvement, including that economics should be given a more consistent role in foreign policymaking and that the NEC should annually undertake a systematic process for setting strategic economic priorities.

The Discretionary Economy: A Normative Theory of Political

The Discretionary Economy: A Normative Theory of Political

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Tool, Marc R., PUBLISHER: Westview Press, The Discretionary Economy argues that we do in fact control our own political and economic destinies. As a community, we have discretion over policies that determine whether an economic process adequately provides for the necessities of life. We also determine who participates in normative public judgments and whether decisions distinguish between what is and what ought to be. Tool argues that we must continuously organize the institutional structures through which economic and political functions in the social process are carried on. We must exercise discretion by creating and modifying institutions that coordinate our behavior. To exercise discretion effectively requires that we employ distinctively American economic, political, and philosophical theory. In this volume, the pivotal twentieth-century contributors to this encompassing theory of political economy are Thorstein Veblen, John Dewey, Clarence Ayres, and R. Fagg Foster. This volume presents, in detail, their analytical and philosophical perspective on social change. A major purpose of this volume is to compare and contrast the American tradition with the traditions of capitalism, Marxism, and fascism, demonstrating that the former can resolve compelling economic and political problems and the latter two cannot. This book explains how to identify and analyze social, economic, and political problems confronted in all communities, and how to go about framing and implementing structural adjustments in the political economy. It will be of interest to students in non-traditional courses in political economy including institutional economics, contemporary social problems, economics and social policy, methodology, andcontemporary economic thought.

Economics of Population Aging: The "Graying" of Australia,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Schulz, James H. / Borowski, Allan / Crown, William H., PUBLISHER: Auburn House Pub. Co., This book examines claims that aging populations will create serious economic problems for various nations. It examines the question in large part through the eyes of researchers and legislators in three target countries: Australia, Japan, and the United States. These countries were chosen because of similar states of economic development and because all were experiencing a rapid aging of their populations. A comprehensive overview is provided of the economic issues related to aging populations. Several aspects are explored in more depth. To date, it is the most complete and thorough study of economic issues associated with population aging. After a brief review of the phenomenon of demographic aging, the authors give a summary of the major economic programs offered to the aged. Extensive research is used to evaluate the concept of dependency ratios and to predict the impact on younger and older persons of future economic and demographic growth. This discussion then provides the basis for a review of evolving retirement policies in the three countries. Special attention is given to the way pension plans have been designed, especially early and mandatory retirement policies. An assessment of the adequacy of retirement income follows. The final three chapters are devoted to policy options for the future, given trends in demographic aging. Social scientists and economists will be most interested in this study.

El Dorado in West Africa: The Gold-Mining Frontier, African

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dumett, Raymond E., PUBLISHER: James Currey, Gold mining occupies a central place in the economic evolution of Ghana. This text examines the period of transition from traditional mining systems to mechanized, capitalized mining companies in the Akan area of the Gold Coast. Looking at the role of African as well as European mining entrepreneurs, female as well as male mining labour, this study encompasses issues of gender, ethnicity, business organization, pressure groups and exploitation. The author seeks to reveal a new complexity in the economic and social history of mining in the late 19th century. In particular he concludes that it is in the individualization of land transfers to mining concessionaires, rather than in the mobilization of a permanent unskilled wage labour force, that the greatest impact on economic and social change can be measured.

Economic and Social Cohesion in Europe: A New Objective

Economic and Social Cohesion in Europe: A New Objective

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hannequart, A. / Hannequart, Achille, PUBLISHER: Routledge, With discussions of a full internal market within the EC finally reaching fruition, and regular intergovernmental talks advancing the ideas of economic, monetary and perhaps eventually political union, economic and social cohesion has become a major objective of Community policy. Regional disparities remain a hard fact of Community life. Although there has been money available since to promote regional development and training in the poorer parts of Europe, it is likely that without serious reform of the Structural Funds these disparities could accelerate. There has been increasing anxiety from these countries about their ability to survive in the single market - anxiety that may jeopardise their participation in the Community effort. The EC has therefore committed itself to new initiatives in science and technology, the environment, social policy and economic and social cohesion. This book studies how the new policy can best be designed, exploring ways in which Structural Funds can be implemented to provide new opportunities for the poorer member states.
