Drama, Stage, and Audience

Drama, Stage, and Audience

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Styan, J. L., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This book shows how a play 'works' in the theatre: how it generates life, meaning and excitement on the stage for the audience. It is self evident that a play must communicate or it is not a play at all. Professor Styan argues that, while communication in drama begins with the script, the value or power of a play must be tested upon an audience. In the theatre experience, it is not so much the elements of drama on the stage or the perceptions of the audience which are important, as the relationships between them. It follows that the study of drama is the study of how the stage compels its audience to be involved in its actual processes; it is a study of a particular social situation. Professor Styan discusses in detail the particular social situation, conditions of performance and physical playhouse in which a play thrives. There is a wealth of examples from all periods of Western drama. He especially deals with plays which make no pretence to 'realism', and much of the discussion turns upon the power and success of Shakespeare as a playwright. This book will appeal to students, actors and directors of drama, as well as the theatregoers. Professor Styan's insistence on criticism based on the theatrical experience will make this an important book for other drama critics.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Roussell, Shelia O'Connell / O'Connell-Roussell, Sheila / Shuck, Vicki, PUBLISHER: Saint Mary's Press, What better way to bring the Gospel alive for teens than through drama? Using reproducible scripts, the dramas in Lectionary-Based Gospel Dramas for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany "break open" the Gospels for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, moving the hearts and minds of youth and adults alike. By engaging in these dramas, participants act as catechist, lector, Gospel players, improv artists, small-group leaders, and audience--a unique learning environment that allows young people to be catechists for themselves and for one another. The dramas are powerful yet easy to stage. The leader's role is purposefully minimal, allowing teens to take the leading roles in the production. These dramas have been used successfully in school classrooms, parish religious education programs, youth groups, RCIA catechesis, homiletic reflections at Mass, and retreats. This book contains everything you need to produce 10 dramas, including 10 reproducible scripts and 10 full-page icons by Vicki Shuck, which are an essential component for visual learners. Imagine the excitement and learning your teens will experience as they live the Gospel through drama

The Other American Drama

The Other American Drama

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Robinson, Marc, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, The Other American Drama proposes an alternative to the received history of American drama, the Eugene O'Neill-Arthur Miller-August Wilson line of development so familiar to readers of standard drama surveys. Marc Robinson begins his book with a study of Gertrude Stein, whose prolific career as a playwright has been unjustly overshadowed by that of O'Neill. Subsequent essays rethink familiar figures such as Tennessee Williams and Sam Shepard, and make the case for such undervalued writers as Maria Irene Fornes, Adrienne Kennedy, and Richard Foreman. An afterword suggests new directions in the work of several younger playwrights. Robinson's book is the first to discuss Stein, Fornes, Kennedy, and Foreman as essential members of modern American theater rather than as curious fringe figures. He shows how these writers direct attention away from plots, experiment with form, redefine emotion and psychology, and search for the essences of theatrical notions usually taken for granted, such as presence, speech, and movement. Taken together, his essays trace the evolution of a truly innovative American drama. "Robinson has produced a work that will be viewed not only] as an important contribution to American theatre, but also as a significant book about the place of drama in American literature."--Theatre Studies "At a time when a new generation of critics is under increasing pressure to 'theorize' drama, often before having had a chance to experience at first hand this most performative of the performing arts, Marc Robinson's The Other American Drama stands out as a bright and informed work."--American Theatre " Robinson's] range is impressive and his insights penetrating."--TheatreJournal

French Renaissance Tragedy

French Renaissance Tragedy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Jondorf, Gillian, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Gillian Jondorf challenges the traditional critical approaches to French Renaissance theater, reevaluating its literary merit and originality. She shows how playwrights of the sixteenth century actually achieved an originality by introducing classical themes, breaking with the medieval tradition of religious and morality plays. Whereas many critics have considered writers of French Renaissance drama as mere forerunners of the more famous seventeenth-century writers such as Molie re or Racine, Jondorf argues that these plays should be seen as competent and skillfully-composed in their own right. This book will appeal to students of Renaissance literature and European drama, as well as those interested in questions of originality and literary influence.
