Scientific Knowledge: Discovery of Nature or Mental

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Settanni, Harry, PUBLISHER: University Press of America, This book defends the constructivist view of science, namely, the view that scientific theories are mental constructions in the mind of the scientist, rather than the realist view that scientific theories are accounts of what nature itself is like. To prove this point, evolution theory is contrasted with "creation science" as two paradigms or extremely divergent theories, each of which, as a mental construct, explains the data or facts of the natural world equally well. Contents: Realism vs. Constructivism; Meaning and Reference in the Natural Sciences; The Role of Paradigm in the Creationism Controversy; Science As Mental Construction.

An Introduction to Game Theory

An Introduction to Game Theory

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Osborne, Martin J., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Game-theoretic reasoning pervades economic theory and is used widely in other social and behavioral sciences. An Introduction to Game Theory, by Martin J. Osborne, presents the main principles of game theory and shows how they can be used to understand economic, social, political, and biological phenomena. The book introduces in an accessible manner the main ideas behind the theory rather than their mathematical expression. All concepts are defined precisely, and logical reasoning is used throughout. The book requires an understanding of basic mathematics but assumes no specific knowledge of economics, political science, or other social or behavioral sciences. Coverage includes the fundamental concepts of strategic games, extensive games with perfect information, and coalitional games; the more advanced subjects of Bayesian games and extensive games with imperfect information; and the topics of repeated games, bargaining theory, evolutionary equilibrium, rationalizability, and maxminimization. The book offers a wide variety of illustrations from the social and behavioral sciences and more than 280 exercises. Each topic features examples that highlight theoretical points and illustrations that demonstrate how the theory may be used. Explaining the key concepts of game theory as simply as possible while maintaining complete precision, An Introduction to Game Theory is ideal for undergraduate and introductory graduate courses in game theory.

Hermeneutical Apprenticeships: Essays, Epigrams, Verse

Hermeneutical Apprenticeships: Essays, Epigrams, Verse

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Loewen, G. V., PUBLISHER: University Press of America, Interpretation, dialogue, and understanding animate each aspect of life. Hermeneutics is the vehicle for a life-project. One may say that it is our vocation to be interpreters, and that this is a necessary condition for human life. A hermeneutical apprenticeship is one in which the ability to reflect with vigilance upon each of our historical situations without ever completely absolving our loyalty to either the transient, sometimes trivial moment, or the more enduring and sometimes authentic 'spirit of the age, ' pronounces a vocation upon us. This book brings together ten essays and other writings, which address these general themes in diverse but related ways. The critique of the use of interpretation theories in the social sciences, the analysis of some of the figures associated with their advent, and the observation and commentary of the culture of the thinkers and teachers who participate in this work are all necessary facets in the exploration of the dynamic of lived experience and reflective consciousness

Thought Without Language

Thought Without Language

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Weiskrantz, L. / Weiskrantz, Lawrence, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Does thought depend crucially on language, as some philosophers maintain, or can abstract reasoning and other faculties exist in the absence of language? This voume, based on a Fyssen Foundation symposium held in Versailles in April , addresses this crucial question in a new way, bringing together experts on non-verbal thinking in adults, in pre-linguistic infants, and in animals. The nineteen chapters, discussion and editorial comment represent an impressive body of material, shedding new light on many aspects of the problem. Topics covered include the role of the non-verbal right cerebral hemisphere in humans; the investigation of non-verbal aspects of various categories of cognition (such as abstract reasoning, spatial awareness, and pattern recognition); evidence for cognition without concious awareness; and neurological and developmental evidence. The concluding chapter is a personal account by a gifted but dyslexic mathematician of the nature of his handicap and the non-vebal reasoning that he has developed to cope with this. various

The Mechanical Universe: Introduction to Mechanics and Heat

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Olenick, Richard / Apostol, Tom M. / Goodstein, David L., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This important textbook is based on, though independent of, an educational TV series to be broadcast on public television in the United States. Its aim is to guide students and general readers to an understanding of how the physical world works; physics is presented as a human endeavour, with historical development forming a thread throughout the text. The prerequisites are minimal, only basic algebra and trigonometry since the necessary calculus is developed in the text, with physics providing the motivation. New concepts are introduced at the natural, logical point with many historical references to place physics in a social perspective. Many topics from twentieth-century physics are included, for example energy, low temperature physics, relativity and black holes. The book is attractively and profusely illustrated and will be welcomed by students and also by general readers for whom this will be a stimulating alternative to other, less-thorough treatments.

Rationality and Logic

Rationality and Logic

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hanna, Robert, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), In "Rationality and Logic," Robert Hanna argues that logic is intrinsically psychological and that human psychology is intrinsically logical. He claims that logic is cognitively constructed by rational animals (including humans) and that rational animals are essentially logical animals. In order to do so, he defends the broadly Kantian thesis that all (and only) rational animals possess an innate cognitive "logic faculty." Hanna's claims challenge the conventional philosophical wisdom that sees logic as a fully formal or "topic-neutral" science irreconcilably separate from the species- or individual-specific focus of empirical psychology. Logic and psychology went their separate ways after attacks by Frege and Husserl on logical psychologism--the explanatory reduction of logic to empirical psychology. Hanna argues, however, that--despite the fact that logical psychologism is false--there is an essential link between logic and psychology. Rational human animals constitute the basic class of cognizers or thinkers studied by cognitive psychology; given the connection between rationality and logic that Hanna claims, it follows that the nature of logic is significantly revealed to us by cognitive psychology. Hanna's proposed "logical cognitivism" has two important consequences: the recognition by logically oriented philosophers that psychologists are their colleagues in the metadiscipline of cognitive science; and radical changes in cognitive science itself. Cognitive science, Hanna argues, is not at bottom a natural science; it is both an objective or truth-oriented science and a normative human science, as is logic itself.
