Psychology for Midwives: Pregnancy, Childbirth and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Raynor, Maureen / Raynor Maureen / England Carole, PUBLISHER: Open University Press, "Psychology for Midwives"" is an excellent aid in grasping the key concepts of psychology in a focused way, clearly demonstrating how the key concepts can be used within modern day midwifery practice settings. This is an easy to use, informative guide, with up to date sources of evidence." Kimberley Skinner, Student Midwife, Anglia Ruskin University, UK "Communication isn't just about giving information. It is about creating relationships. This book is studded with academic references, but can also help midwives understand and interact with their clients in a satisfying way." Sheila Kitzinger, Honorary Professor at Thames Valley University, UK "A well set out book comprising a comprehensive list of relevant contents... Of particular note is the use of case vinaigrettes, stories, reflective activities and summaries of key points... The content of the book reflect a range of contemporary theoretical approaches and subject areas." Maria Barrell, University of Northumbria, UK" ""This is an excellent book which focuses on the underlying psychological factors that influence and guide women through pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium. There are clear descriptions of relevant theories and current research, supported by case studies which offer real life insight into issues such as how women feel during and after pregnancy... The book covers areas that will affect everyone such as the development of relationships and emotions, covering not only the women but their support networks including family and birth partners." Jane Mills, Student Midwife, Keele University, UK" This accessible, evidence-based book explores how important it is for midwives to understand the psychological aspects of care, in order to create positive experiences for mothers and families. The book provides simple explanations for why psychological care matters in midwifery practice and uses different theoretical perspectives of psychology to illustrate how it fundamentally contributes to good midwifery practice. The book addresses many core concepts and principles of psychology, including: Mother-midwife relationship Emotions during the childbearing continuum Perinatal mental illness Communications in midwifery practice The birth environment Stress and anxiety Providing support to families Attachment and bonding Reflective questions, activities, illustrations, tables, summary boxes and a glossary help readers navigate the book. One of the first books of its kind, "Psychology for Midwives" is essential reading for all midwives, students and allied health care professionals interested in the psychological dimensions of childbearing.

High School Underachievers: What Do They Achieve as Adults?

High School Underachievers: What Do They Achieve as Adults?

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: McCall, Robert B. / Evahn, Cynthia / Kratzer, Lynn, PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), For years, educators, counselors, and parents have debated whether underachievers can outgrow this behavior and perform up to their abilities as adults. What happens educationally, occupationally, and maritally to underachievers after they leave high school? In the largest sample of underachievers and the first long-term (13-year) study ever conducted, the authors explore whether underachievers "catch up" after high school to the level of their abilities, the traits of those who do, and the traits of those who don't. Through an analysis of the 13-year longitudinal study, they compare underachievers with students who receive the same grades and students who have tested at the same ability level but who have performed better in school. Covering such issues as personality variables, learning strategies, self-esteem, classroom structure, the educational system, and parental styles, the authors sift through the data to discover what factors are associated with underachievement and what techniques have worked to help these students improve their performance. USE FOR NEXT MAILING (): "Good, substantive research on underachievement has been lacking in the field of gifted education for some time. McCall's book fills a needed void in the literature.... University libraries and resource centers for gifted education will want to add this book to their inventories. High School Underachievers is a timely addition on the most current information about underachievement." --Roeper Review "McCall has taken an unusually thorny and controversial area (controversial in the sense that historically there has been little agreement among workers in the area as to even the definition of the phenomena)and quite clearly defined a series of issues of interest to him. He has then applied a methodology to address those issues.... It seems to me that it is a good piece of work." --Mark Appelbaum, Vanderbilt University "This brief volume contains good data about a problem, underachievement, that represents a longtime concern of parents and educators. The authors discuss theories, but the only hypothesis tested was that underachievers might form a meaningful syndrome. They had an opportunity to analyze data--including the outcomes 13 years after high school graduation--on a sample of substantial size, and they obtained more relevant and dependable information about the supposed phenomenon than has heretofore been available. More psychological research should have this outcome and this beginning." --Contemporary Psychology

TC Electronic Intonator Vocal Intonation Processor

TC Electronic Intonator Vocal Intonation Processor

Intonator Encompassing a heritage of more than 20 years of delivering professional tools to the pro audio industry, TC Electronic proudly presents a high end vocal processing tool. Dedicated to the professional vocal recording engineer, the Intonator is aimed at reducing tedious engineering time spent on doing vocal re-takes. Not only does it provide you with the ultimate solution to vocal pitch correction, but it offers various valuable processing tools as well, including a De-esser, and a special Adaptive LoCut filter designed specifically for vocal processing. Quality Tools For Quality Engineering Tonal integrity is a must when dealing with delicate human vocals. The Intonator preserves the artist's personal touch by allowing vibrato, initial intonation and correction limited to individual notes. Utmost care has been taken in the software development to ensure that all fine adjustments applied to the incoming signal are being processed in a subtle, yet highly effective manner! Transparency Based on TC's world-renowned DARCâ,,¢3 chip technology (incorporating 96kHz internal processing and true 24 bit resolution), the Intonator provides you with an ultra-transparent signal path. It features fully integrated AES/EBU, S/PDIF, Tos-link and ADAT digital I/O's, and is 96kHz, 88.2kHz, 48kHz and 44.1kHz compatible on both digital and analog I/O's. Coherence Apart from the clear advantages of reducing the time spent on doing vocal re-takes, the Intonator also brings back coherence into the performance. Instead of cutting and pasting bits and phrases, with the loss of coherence as an obvious result, you now have a professional tool for processing and correcting your vocals in real-time. Two Signal Setups The Intonator also makes you capable of configuring the signal path in two different ways. In Normal mode the ADIOS (Analog Dual I/O's) configuration enables you to make simultaneous recordings of processed and unprocessed vocals, making comparisons a breeze (see fig. A). Digital signals, from your digital multitrack recorder for instance, can be configured the same way. In Dual mode you have the option of pitch-correcting the signal in one channel while using the dynamics, De-esser and LoCut, on the signal in the other channel (see fig. B). Being On Top You can choose to correct a single note simply by using the unique "Do-not-process-anything-but-this-note" function achieved via an internal custom scale feature, or type in your personal scale. A Pitch window allows you to specify when a note will be considered out of tune, whereas the Amount control limits the level of Pitch correction added to the audio. The Audio-to-MIDI conversion allows you to keep track of the incoming pitch history and/or correction history, giving you the advantages of being on top of things throughout the entire recording session. The Intonator features full MIDI automation making time based pitch shifting a simple operation. Use your keyboard for real-time manual pitch correction simply by hitting the notes to be processed. Dithering The use of dithering is very important when interfacing digitally between audio equipment. When resolution is changed from higher to lower, dithering is necessary to minimize distortion. In the Intonator you have the user friendly TPDF Dithering. The Output resolution of the Intonator is 24 bit, when the receiver of the Intonator signal has a lower resolution, Output Dither must be applied to equal the resolution of the receiver. Premium Converters When converting from analog to digital or vice versa, you should always try to use the full dynamic range of your converters. Even though the converters in the Intonator are 24 bit, analog gain may be applied before the AD's and after the DA's to make full use of them. The analog signal-path is balanced and can carry professional levels. Applications With the Intonator, you can establish a completely digital signal-path for vocal editing and correction. When tracking, the unit's fine A to D converters may be utilized to get high quality digital signals directly to Multitrack, ADAT, ProTools etc. Audio-to-MIDI With a simple setup you can monitor and edit your vocals externally. Just track the incoming pitch history to your sequencer, add the necessary correction and play back the pitch correction to the Intonator Keyboard The keyboard gives you instant access to changing the Root note of the current scale or the notes allowed to be corrected. Simultaneously the keyboard also indicates the incoming note, making it possible to recognize the note about to be processed. Display The Display shows you the current Root note and Scale. While processing you can see both the incoming signal and the amount of correction added to the source, creating a visual confirmation of the process taking place. Window, Attack and Amount These three knobs allow you to individualize the processing in detail. The Window knob determines how close to a particular note the source should be in order to be corrected. The Attack knob conducts the response-time before the correction sets in. This will help preserve the artist's personal touch by e.g. allowing vibrato. The Amount knob sets the amount of correction added to the signal. Manual Pitch Use the Manual Pitch control to add pitch correction by hand. The wheel can also be remote controlled by your keyboard modulation wheel or even provide in-sync changes when locked to a sequencer. The De-esser uses a relative threshold technique. This means that the actual threshold is always set according to the average level of the source signal. Consequently, the De-esser always adapts to the incoming signal and maintains the same threshold to the average level regardless of the Input signal. Adaptive Locut The Adaptive LoCut is a pitch controlled LoCut Filter. Instead of cutting off frequencies under a predetermined value, the Adaptive LoCut filter controls the cut off frequencies dynamically in accordance with the incoming signal. This ensures a perfect LoCut that never removes too much low end.

The Spiritual Emerson: Essential Writings

The Spiritual Emerson: Essential Writings

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Emerson, Ralph Waldo / Robinson, David M., PUBLISHER: Beacon Press (MA), The first collection of Emerson's spiritual writings, published for the 200th anniversary of the writer's birth Matthew Arnold once described Ralph Waldo Emerson as "the friend and aider of all those who would live in the spirit." Arnold's comment captured the impact that Emerson had as a teacher of a new form of spirituality in the nineteenth century. Emerson proposed a new religious vision that made the spiritual life freshly accessible to people. In our current era, Emerson continues to speak with a compelling voice. Known best in the twenty-first century as a literary innovator and early architect of American intellectual culture, Emerson's writings still offer spiritual sustenance to the thoughtful reader. The Spiritual Emerson brings together the essays and lectures that best articulate Emerson's spiritual vision, and promise the greatest relevance to today's reader. Compiled and introduced by David M. Robinson, one of the leading authorities on Emerson, The Spiritual Emerson will be both a portrait of Emerson as a spiritual teacher and a sourcebook for all those who find his ideas and convictions useful in their own efforts to live in the spirit. "This collection brings together for the first time Emerson's most important writings on spiritual themes, along with a discerning and eminently readable introduction by one of the foremost authorities on Emerson's religious thought." --Lawrence Buell, Harvard University, author of LITERARY TRANSCENDENTALISM and EMERSON "Simply the best selection ever made from the spiritual writings of America's most influential sage. Combining familiar essays with the oft-neglected, from both the early and the laterEmerson, Robinson reveals the paradoxes that shaped one soul then and continue to shape many today. For all who still care for the soul, essential reading." --John Buehrens, author of UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE "THE SPIRITUAL EMERSON is a superb and timely collection, one that will help to elucidate and consolidate our understanding of Emerson's spirituality on the occasion of his 200th birthday celebration. Accessibly framed and introduced by David Robinson, our premier scholar of the religious context and character of Emersonian Transcendentalism, this elegantly appointed volume will help open the way to a fuller understanding of the heart of Emerson's thought. Drawn together chronologically from every period of Emerson's long and productive career, the essays contained here provide a sound basis for a better understanding of the life-long evolution of his religious and moral philosophy." --Alan Hodder, Hampshire College "David Robinson is our leading interpreter of the later Emerson's pragmatic turn toward an 'ever greater conviction that ethical action is] not a by-product of religious belief, but the very core of religion itself.' Robinson has for years been calling attention to Emerson as a religious figure, not just a

JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, Beta Version

JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, Beta Version

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Flanagan, David, PUBLISHER: O'Reilly Media, JavaScript is a simple programming language from Netscape that can be embedded in your HTML Web pages. It allows you to control the behavior of the Web browser, add dynamically created text to your Web pages, interact with the user through HTML forms ("without CGI scripts), and, in version 3.0 of Netscape Navigator, even control and interact with Java applets and Navigator plugins. JavaScript is not an alternative to Java, but an ideal partner. The two languages have separate but very complementary features. Since JavaScript is a simple language that can be embedded directly into a Web page, without need for compilation, it is accessible to more Web page authors, and may actually have a larger short-term impact on the Web and on Internet computing than Java itself. This book is a definitive guide for JavaScript. The first eight chapters document the core JavaScript language, and the next six describe how JavaScript works on the client-side to interact with the Web browser and with the Web page. These chapters are followed by a"complete reference section that documents every object, property, method, event handler, function, and constructor used by client-side JavaScript. In a separate reference section, you will find the interaction between JavaScript and HTML documented -- mainly aspects of HTML that relate to JavaScript. A forthcoming edition of this book will cover the use of JavaScript on Web servers, as well as the object, properties, and methods of server-side JavaScript. This book documents the version of JavaScript shipped with Navigator , and 2.0.2, and also the much-changed version of JavaScript shipped with beta versions of Navigator 3.0. The 3.0 informationis current as of the 3.0b4 release. JavaScript is also supported in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, and this book discusses JavaScript support in Beta 1 of MSIE. A notable feature of these versions of JavaScript is the frustrating number of bugs that still exist. The book contains a long list of known bugs and is careful to document commonly encountered bugs on the reference pages of the JavaScript objects. Why is this book in "Beta"? We printed this book in a "beta" edition because JavaScript is rapidly evolving. Within Netscape, the version of JavaScript that will be in Navigator 3.0 is being called "JavaScript 1.0." This is an implicit admission that JavaScript as implemented in Navigator 2.0 was still a beta version of the language. Despite JavaScript's beta status, a tremendous number of people are using it and need quality documentation for it. At the same time, however, we realize there have been a lot of changes to JavaScript since Navigator 2.0 was released. As this book is being written, Navigator is at the 3.0b4 stage, and we are beginning to hear about the new features that will be available in the 3.0b5 release. It seems, in fact, that JavaScript is changing faster at this point than at any other time in its

The Comet Hale-Bopp Book: Guide to an Awe-Inspiring Visitor

The Comet Hale-Bopp Book: Guide to an Awe-Inspiring Visitor

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hockey, Thomas A. / Bopp, Thomas, PUBLISHER: ATL Press, A fascinating introduction to the recently discovered Comet Hale-Bopp that will soon burst onto the celestial scene. The comet will be one of the most-studied and perhaps brightest. It arrives on the heels of other recent comets in the "year of the comet". Hockey's book fills the long-standing demand for a guidebook that helps everyone gripped by "comet-fever" appreciate this spectacular event. It is written in a lucid style for a non-technical readership. Biographical details and first-person quotes from Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp, among others, humanize the science behind the comet and capture the "feel" of what could well-be the astronomical event of the decade. The book provides the reader with charts and tables to locate and observe the comet. Hockey tells the story of the comet's discovery, astronomer's reaction to it, and their preparation for its arrival. It also discusses other famous comets, including Comet Halley, Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Comet Hyakutake, and their significance. "This is a well-written account of everything you need to know to enjoy Comet Hale-Bopp. The level of writing is most appropriate for young teens, but their parents will pick it up and learn a great deal as well. I was particularly impressed with how well the author handles scientific concepts for this audience. They are deftly woven into the text, and should inspire young readers to see science as an exciting process, not a collection of factoids". Dr. Catharine Garmany, University of Colorado, Boulder, Chair, Education Advisory Board, American Astronomical Society "It is refreshing... to see this authoritative little book... The book is especially suitable for younger readers, observers, andamateur astronomers. The profuse photo illustrations include not only some of the better NASA and large-telescope images of comets, asteroids, and craters, but also shots of current science personalities, including the discoverers; Hale and Bopp. All in all, the book gives an easy introduction to why scientists and naturalists are excited about the approach of a new, major comet... Perhaps the most inspiring chapters for many readers will be the last two, which detail how and where to watch for the comet, the role of amateurs in comet studies, and how to understand and use small telescopes... I recommend it for younger readers and applaud the author... for introducing a whole new generation of readers to their own personal comet and hence to the wonders of the universe around us". Dr. William K. Hartmann, Planetary Science Institute, Tucson, Author of "Astronomy: the Cosmic Journey" and "Moons and Planets", co-author of "The Modern Theory for the Origin of the Moon", Mariner 9 space-probe imaging team co-investigator, Space Artist "Hockey has the first-time astronomical observer clearly in his sights...young astronomers will enjoy Hockey. How did upstart Boston Beer Company--makers of Sam Adams--revolutionize the beer industry and prevail over lumbering incumbent Anheuser-Busch without an advertising budget? And how did lams create the premium pet food market and grow from $16 million to $600 million in sales in just fifteen years, while charging twice the price of competitor Ralston-Purina? Through radical marketing. In the tradition of such bestsellers as "Thriving on Chaos" and "Built to Last, Radical Marketing" is a fresh, provocative approach to marketing and strategy that has proven hugely successful for organizations ranging from Harley-Davidson to Harvard Business School. In this book, Sam Hill, cofounder of Helios Consulting and an oft-quotes expert on marketing, and Glenn Rifkin, a veteran business writer for the "New York Times," identify the unconventional strategies that have enabled ten innovative companies to usurp valuable market share from traditional industry leaders. Just what do these organizations have in common? Each is in tune emotionally with their customer base--allowing them to glean superior marketing insight without spending millions of dollars on advertising or employing huge marketing departments. Each is focused more on the big picture--growth and expansion--than on short term profits. And, despite their current success, each started out with little more than a passion for their products, forcing them to do things more cheaply and creatively. How do these commonalties equal success? In "Radical Marketing," you willlearn how: by forging long-term strategic alliances and seeding the globe with enthusiastic missionaries, the NBA has become the most powerful global sports brand in the world, elevating ticket sales and TV rights to $2 billion; Harley-Davidson helped spur its regeneration by starting a club of owners--and, in so doing, re-established itself as an enduring brand, a darling of Wall Street, and nothing less than an American icon of freedom and individuality; little-known EMC became the dominant player in the computer storage market, eclipsing industry leader IBM--by aggressively courting IBM' s customer base and creating a community of users around EMC' s products; Snap-on Tools owns 60 percent market share and became a nearly $2 billion company, selling tools door-to-door to its core customer base of over one million auto mechanics; Providian Financial, whose CEO lacked any formal marketing training and expertise, cracked new markets and won an army of new customers without using focus groups or any traditional advertising; Harvard Business School created the market for graduate business schools and established itself as the gold standard of its industry not by resting on the laurels of the auspicious Harvar

Zero feedback, nessun amplificatore operazionale. Guardate lo schema a blocchi. Il DAC: basato sugli integrati CS + CS. Questo DAC converte i segnali audio digitali coassiali o toslink in analogico canale destro/sinistro. Supporta frequenze di campionamento a KHz e 192Khz. Bit rate: 24-bit formato standard S/PDIF. The Charlemagne Pursuit

The Charlemagne Pursuit

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Berry, Steve, PUBLISHER: Hodder & Stoughton General Division, ONE Garmisch, Germany Tuesday, December 11, The Present 1:40 pm Cotton Malone hated enclosed spaces. His current unease was amplified by a packed cable car. Most of the passengers were on vacation, dressed in colorful garb, shouldering poles and skis. He sensed a variety of nationalities. Some Italians, a few Swiss, a handful of French, but mainly Germans. He'd been one of the first to climb aboard and, to relieve his discomfort, he'd made his way close to one of the frosty windows. Ten thousand feet above and closing, the Zugspitze stood silhouetted against a steel- blue sky, the imposing gray summit draped in a late- autumn snow. Not smart, agreeing to this location. The car continued its giddy ascent, passing one of several steel tres-tles that rose from the rocky crags. He was unnerved, and not simply from the crowded surroundings. Ghosts awaited him atop Germany's highest peak. He'd avoided this rendezvous for nearly four decades. People like him, who buried their past so determinedly, should not help it from the grave so easily. Yet here he was, doing exactly that. Vibrations slowed as the car entered, then stopped at the summit station. Skiers flooded off toward another lift that would take them down to a high- altitude corrie, where a chalet and slopes waited. He didn't ski, never had, never wanted to. He made his way through the visitor center, identified by a yellow placard as MYncher Haus. A restaurant dominated one half of the building, the rest housed a theater, a snack bar, an observatory, souvenir shops, and a weather station. He pushed through thick glass doors and stepped out onto a railed terrace. Bracing Alpine air stung his lips. According to Stephanie Nelle his contact should be waiting on the observation deck. One thing was obvious. Ten thousand feet in the high Alps certainly added a height-ened measure of privacy to their meeting. The Zugspitze lay on the border. A succession of snowy crags rose south toward Austria. To the north spanned a soup- bowl valley ringed by rock- ribbed peaks. A gauze of frosty mist shielded the German vil-lage of Garmisch and its companion, Partenkirchen. Both were sports meccas, and the region catered not only to skiing but also bobsledding, skating, and curling. More sports he'd avoided. The observation deck was deserted save for an elderly couple and a few skiers who'd apparently paused to enjoy the view. He'd come to solve a mystery, one that had preyed on his mind ever since that day when the men in uniforms came to tell his mother that her husband was dead. ""Contact was lost with the submarine forty- eight hours ago. We dispatched search and rescue ships to the North Atlantic, which have combed the last known position. Wreckage was found six hours ago. We waited to tell the families until we were sure there was no chance of survivors." " His mother had never cried. Not her way. But that didn't mean she wasn't devas
