Moments of Truth in Genetic Medicine

Moments of Truth in Genetic Medicine

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lindee, M. Susan, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, Genetic research increasingly dominates medical thought and practice in the United States and in many other industrialized nations. Susan Lindee's original study explores the institutions, disciplines, and ideas that initiated the reconfiguration of genetic medicine from a marginal field in the mid-s to a core research frontier of biomedicine. Tracing the work of geneticists and other experts in identifying and classifying disease during the explosive period between and , Lindee identifies the individual "moments of truth" that moved the field away from its eugenic past to the center of a new world view in which nearly all disease is understood to be fundamentally genetic. She suggests that these moments of truth were experienced not only by scientists but also by those who had familial, intimate, emotional knowledge of hereditary disease: patients, family members, and research subjects. Focusing on benchmarks in the field -- such as the rise of neonatal testing in the s, genetic studies of unique human populations such as the Amish, the development of human cytogenetics and human behavioral genetics, and the efforts to find genes for rare diseases such as familial dysautonomia -- she tracks the emergence of a biomedical consensus that nearly all disease is genetic disease. Using the success of this field as a point of entry, Lindee chronicles both the production of knowledge in biomedicine and changes in the cultural meaning of the body in the late twentieth century. She suggests that scientific knowledge is a community project that is shaped directly by people in many different social and professional locations. The power to experience and report scientific truth may be much more dispersed than it sometimes appears, because people know things about their own bodies, and their knowledge has often been incorporated into the technical infrastructure of genomic medicine. Lindee's pathbreaking study shows the interdependence of technical and social parameters in contemporary biomedicine.

Anxiety Disorders in Adults: An Evidence-Based Approach to

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: McLean, Peter D. / Woody, Sheila R., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Recently developed psychosocial treatments for anxiety disorders reflect the systematic influence of scientifically generated knowledge, and these new treatments yield strong results. Research in such areas as information processing, cognition, behavioral avoidance, and the physiological components of anxious arousal has increased our knowledge of mediators that cause and maintain anxiety disorders. The development of these new clinical tools is timely, as epidemiological studies now show that up to 25% of people will experience at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Meanwhile, mental health care providers are increasingly pressured to limit the number of sessions and use demonstrably effective treatments. In this book, the authors review psychosocial treatments for anxiety disorders, focusing on the scientific basis and demonstrated outcomes of the treatments. Cognitive behavioral therapies are highlighted, as they have been the most frequently investigated approaches to treating anxiety disorders. Individual chapters feature specific phobias: social phobia, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. The book is rich in clinical material and integrates science and clinical practice in an effort to help practitioners to improve the effectiveness of their work with anxious clients.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gelman, Rochel / Carey, Susan, PUBLISHER: Psychology Press, Reflecting the focus of a Jean Piaget Symposium entitled "Biology and Knowledge: Structural Constraints on Development," this volume presents many of the emergent themes discussed. Among them: * Structural constraints on cognitive development and learning come in many shapes and forms and involve appeal to more than one level of analysis. * To postulate innate knowledge is not to deny that humans can acquire new concepts. * It is unlikely that there is only one learning mechanism, even if one prefers to work with general as opposed to domain-specific mechanisms. * The problems of induction with respect to concept acquisition are even harder than originally thought.

Re-Presenting the Good Society

Re-Presenting the Good Society

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cooke, Maeve, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Contemporary critical social theories face the question of how to justify the ideas of the good society that guide their critical analyses. Traditionally, these more or less determinate ideas of the good society were held to be independent of their specific sociocultural context and historical epoch. Today, such a concept of context-transcending validity is not easy to defend; the "linguistic turn" of Western philosophy signals the widespread acceptance of the view that ideas of knowledge and validity are always mediated linguistically and that language is conditioned by history and context. In "Re-Presenting the Good Society," Maeve Cooke addresses the justificatory dilemma facing critical social theories: how to maintain an idea of context-transcending validity without violating anti-authoritarian impulses. In doing so she not only clarifies the issues and positions taken by other theorists--including Richard Rorty, Jurgen Habermas, Axel Honneth, and Judith Butler--but also offers her own original and thought-provoking analysis of context-transcending validity. Because the tension between an anti-authoritarian impulse and a guiding idea of context-transcending validity is today an integral part of critical social theory, Cooke argues that it should be negotiated rather than eliminated. Her proposal for a concept of context-transcending validity has as its central claim that we should conceive of the good society as "re-presented" in particular constitutively inadequate representations of it. These re-presentations are, Cooke argues provocatively, regulative ideas that have an imaginary, fictive character.
