Doing Critical Ethnography

Doing Critical Ethnography

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Thomas, Jim / Thomas, Jim, PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), "The book offers communication researchers some of the best recent work on qualitative inquiry in the human disciplines.... Published by Sage, the leading publisher of qualitative research in the social sciences today.... Jim Thomas's method, well displayed in illustrations drawn from his emancipatory work in prisons, has important connections to the participatory action (Friere) and critical theory traditions.... This work brings the communication scholar up-to-date on where qualitative methods are in current sociological and educational discourse." --Norman K. Denzin in Journal of Communication If a researcher's responsibility entails the righting of social wrongs and producing valid research results, how is it possible to juxtapose these two goals? Representing the marriage of two traditions in social science, critical theory and qualitative research, Doing Critical Ethnography applies a critical worldview to the conventional logic of cultural inquiry. This innovative volume does not oppose conventional ethnography; rather, it offers a style of thinking about the direct relationship between knowledge, society, and political action. The author defines the rules and guidelines for a praxis-oriented ethnographic tradition, one both ideologically engaged and scientifically valid. He also outlines the various types of critical ethnography and explains the tenets of each and how research can be carried out under these frameworks. This challenging volume will be useful to students and professionals in qualitative research in social theory, and critical studies.

Redeeming Modernity: Contradictions in Media Criticism

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Jensen, Joli, PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), This book examines the explicit and implicit logic operating in claims of media influence. Beginning with a close analysis of arguments by four critical voices - Dwight Macdonald, Daniel Boorstin, Stuart Ewen and Neil Postman - on the nature of media influence, the author demonstrates how they mobilize three dominant metaphors - media as information, media as art, and media as education. She then examines the historical and intellectual roots of these concepts in American social and cultural thought and explores media as a new technology as a means for more positive expectations of media influence. The book closes with a section considering how debates on postmodernism redirect but do not resolve the basic contradictions in social and cultu

Re-Presenting the Good Society

Re-Presenting the Good Society

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cooke, Maeve, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Contemporary critical social theories face the question of how to justify the ideas of the good society that guide their critical analyses. Traditionally, these more or less determinate ideas of the good society were held to be independent of their specific sociocultural context and historical epoch. Today, such a concept of context-transcending validity is not easy to defend; the "linguistic turn" of Western philosophy signals the widespread acceptance of the view that ideas of knowledge and validity are always mediated linguistically and that language is conditioned by history and context. In "Re-Presenting the Good Society," Maeve Cooke addresses the justificatory dilemma facing critical social theories: how to maintain an idea of context-transcending validity without violating anti-authoritarian impulses. In doing so she not only clarifies the issues and positions taken by other theorists--including Richard Rorty, Jurgen Habermas, Axel Honneth, and Judith Butler--but also offers her own original and thought-provoking analysis of context-transcending validity. Because the tension between an anti-authoritarian impulse and a guiding idea of context-transcending validity is today an integral part of critical social theory, Cooke argues that it should be negotiated rather than eliminated. Her proposal for a concept of context-transcending validity has as its central claim that we should conceive of the good society as "re-presented" in particular constitutively inadequate representations of it. These re-presentations are, Cooke argues provocatively, regulative ideas that have an imaginary, fictive character.

Spreading the Gospel of the Modern Dance: Newspaper Dance

Spreading the Gospel of the Modern Dance: Newspaper Dance

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Conner, Lynne / Conner, Lynn, PUBLISHER: University of Pittsburgh Press, In the fall of , newspaper dance writing in the United States evolved from a haphazard and largely throw-away subspecies of music criticism (covered by music and drama critics and sometimes sports and society columnists) into a specialized field of arts reporting and commentary. Lynne Conner investigates the watershed moment when New York City's three leading daily newspapers -- the New York World, the New York Herald Tribune, and the New York Times -- all hired full-time dance writers. Her investigation reveals the relationship between the rise of American concert dance, the solo and modern dance movements, and the emergence of its corresponding critical discourse, dance writing in American dailies. Conner analyzes the social, economic, and cultural issues affecting both forms, and presents a more complex interaction between the modern dance and its critical discourse than has been previously understood. At the center of her research is the work of three pioneering dance writers: Lucile Marsh, Mary E Watkins, and John Martin. A pioneering book in its own right, Spreading the Gospel of the Modern Dance is the first comprehensive history of American dance criticism. "Spreading the Gospel of the Modern Dance intertwines a history of modern dance with a history of newspaper publishing in a way that sheds new light on both histories. It is persuasive in the argument that the growth of an art form depends not simply upon the creation of innovative works by artists but also upon the education and cultivation of its audience, through the medium of mass journalism". Noel Carroll, University of Wisconsin "A fascinating account of American newspaper dance criticism.... Offers apanoramic view of changing styles in the format and content of American newspapers, and is therefore of interest not only to dance lovers, but also to anyone concerned with trends in the media".
