Black self consciousness at a national level found powerful expression in new movements, from the demand for equality in the military service to changes in the shop floor to the _Double V_ campaign that linked the fight for democracy at home for the fight for democracy abroad. As the nation played a new world role in the developing Cold War, the tensions between America's stated beliefs and actual practices emphasized these issues and brought new forces into play. More than a half century later, this book presents a much-needed up-to-date, short and readable interpretation of existing scholarship. Accessible to general and student readers, it tells the story without jargon or theory while including the historiography and debate on particular issues.

Ironically, although his vocation was as a movement-builder, his book alone sparked no movement; it did swiftly result in policy -- President Johnson's War on Poverty -- though without the focus or level of funding found in European welfare states that Harrington, a former Catholic Worker turned socialist, argued was necessary. Decades later, several European socialist leaders reputedly believed that had he been European, he would have been a prime minister. But since he wasn't, his life was lived in surroundings too small for his gifts. Sectarian politics swallowed much of his energy in the s, leaving organizational commitments and battle scars that crippled his potential to play a leading role in shaping the political movements of the s. Remarkably, Harrington bounced back to achieve great success in the s, with the Democratic Agenda movement, which crafted significant progressive planks in the Democratic Party platform. Isserman (If I Had a Hammer), a noted historian of the American Left, does an excellent job of drawing the reader in with Harrington's family background and early life, but there's too little exploration of his writing and of the conservative forces arrayed against him in the '70s and '80s for readers to fully appreciate the sweep and sophistication of his intellectual vision or his capacity to adapt. Still, this is a valuable and intriguing look at a major figure of the American left of enduring influence.

Picabia's readymade opened art not just to the commodity, but to the larger world from which the commodity stems: the fluid sea of capital and money that transforms all objects and experiences in its wake. The book thus tells the story of a set of newly transformed artistic practices, claiming them for art history--and naming them--for the first time: Dada Drawing, Dada Painting, Dada Photography, Dada Abstraction, Dada Cinema, Dada Montage. The book chronicles Keehan's readjustment to civilian life as, and his subsequent life's mission: the honoring of Westport's sons and daughters that left the safety of the hearth and home to join the armed services to fight during World War II. However, Westport's World War II monument, called the Honor Roll, which was built during the war, is missing, a victim of both time and neglect. In an effort to find out what happened to the Honor Roll and to have another war memorial rebuilt, Keehan faces numerous obstacles, including opposition from warring town boards and committees, small town politics, and a few vindictive Westport residents bent on derailing Keehan's plans. Battle of Honor is a must read for World War IIbuffs, for those who enjoy history and for anybody who enjoys a good story.
