Yet, these schools were intertwined by their geographical location and the traditions of the segregated South. There are many glaring similarities between the white students of Georgia Southern University's forerunner, the First District A&M School, and the black students of the Statesboro Industrial and High School. Yet as happened all too often in the South as implementation of the federal court's desegregation orders took shape, "Negro" schools were downgraded or outright closed. Statesboro was no different. While, First District A&M became a regional university, Statesboro Industrial and High School was downgraded to a junior high school. In , integration on the higher-education level at Georgia's flagship university captured national attention. Few works if any have examined desegregation in the context of non-flagship universities. Likewise, there is a misguided mythology that desegregation occurred quietly at Georgia Southern University: it's clear that while there was not the violence and rioting seen elsewhere in Southern universities, blacks were marginalized and did not feel welcome at the college. A passive group after the initial integration, blacks adopted tactics of protest and confrontation to empower themselves. Taking a page from the Civil Rights Movement, black students and faculty established organizations to confront discrimination and gain access to campus leadership positions. This is a story about the defeats, victories, struggles, and developments of blacks at Georgia Southern University.

He spent thirty five years as an advertising account executive and copy writer, the last portion of that time in his own one man agency. Over a forty year period he taught Bible to Sunday School classes ranging in age from three years old to what he calls "65 to Glory." He began singing in his church choir as a freshman in college and considered studying for the music ministry. However, the Lord had other plans, and it was only after forty-eight years-many of which were passed as lay song leader, occasional supply as choir leader and in serving several churches as interim music minister-that Jack was called as Minister of Music to a small church in Metropolitan Atlanta. He currently earns his livelihood repairing, restoring and re-caning chairs, rockers and wicker furniture. He demonstrates the art of chair caning at craft shows and state fairs, and teaches chair caning classes several times each year. He and his wife Lyn live in Marietta, Georgia, near their three married daughters, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. It is from this varied life experience that Jack's Parables for Plain People are drawn. They are all based upon his keen awareness of the presence of the Holy Spirit, purposefully working out His Will, in even the most ordinary daily events, for those who put their faith and trust in Him.

In "Chesnutt and Realism, "Ryan Simmons breaks new ground by theorizing how understandings of literary realism have shaped, and can continue to shape, the reception of Chesnutt's work. Although Chesnutt is typically acknowledged as the most prominent African American writer of the realist period, little attention has been paid to the central question of this study: what does it mean to call Chesnutt a realist? A writer whose career was circumscribed by the dismal racial politics of his era, Chesnutt refused to conform to literary conventions for depicting race.
