Lo sono i suoi occhi e il suo manto nero e lucente, la sua dolcezza, la sua eleganza... Gemma è proprio una bella mora mediterranea... Si vede che ha sofferto, chi l'ha abbandonata le ha insegnato ad aver paura dell'uomo... Appena arrivata in canile si avvicinava a noi strisciando per terra e piagnucolando, si arrendeva pancia all'aria, nascondeva il muso tra le sue stesse zampe... A poco a poco ha acquisito fiducia in noi e ha capito che nessuno qui le farà del male... Ora è fin troppo estroversa, salta, gioca, ci fa le feste... E' più o meno quello che fanno tutti i cani che hanno sofferto appena arrivati in canile, gli sembra il paradiso in confronto a quello che hanno subito, ma passati un po' di mesi, quando capiscono che il canile non è un luna park e sentono la mancanza della libertà e di un branco umano, iniziano ad essere meno festosi e più spenti, così è successo anche a Gemma... Gemma adora l'acqua, le piace tuffarsi nel catino dell'acqua e giocare con il tubo mentre puliamo il suo box... è proprio una sagoma! Possiede i tratti caratteriali tipici della sua razza: cerca di controllare e "pascolare" gli altri cani, non con tutti va d'accordo, ha convissuto per tanto tempo con Sirio, da poco adottato, e ora vive insieme a Chuck. Per la sua vivacità Gemma non è adatta a bambini molto piccoli. Gemma ha bisogno di una famiglia con esperienza in fatto di cani che la sappia guidare e indirizzare la sua incontenibile vitalità. E' una cagnetta molto affettuosa, ottima compagna di vita, peccato che chi l'ha abbandonata non l'abbia capito... Gemma è un incrocio pastore belga di taglia media, ha 4 anni. We've expanded through the years and now the editors are spread throughout California and the Northwest (plus one in Michigan). What unifies the journal is a focus on the writing of the Left Coast, on the way that the writing of the West works outside the framework of the traditional and the academic, pushes back against writing that fits into small spaces, writing that was written for a small group of elite intellectuals. Many of these stories look forward and backward at the same time, at what was and what could have been, at what will be and what could change. Writing in the West continues to evolve and move forward over the edge. It is the writing of desire. My definition of the writing of the West comes from my play, "The Moon Landing is a Hoax." We write about: Sky, clouds, water, hiking, boats, machines, wide open spaces, grasses, mountains, caves, racks of antlers, mustard seed growing, wild orchids, waterfalls, fat people, hairy people, ugly people, dipshits, trailer trash people, truck drivers, soldiers, gypsies, Mexicans, nuclear bombs, test sites, Las Vegas, military bases, guys that work on cars, half wits from Kansas, women with no teeth and curlers in their hair in case they go out later and all of us eating the dark that is America. Flynn Berry's "Surfing," the story of a man, as told by his brother, growing to adulthood, becoming addicted to drugs, going through one rehab stint after another, ends like this: "Here is what I want, out of the many, many things I want. I want to go to Berkeley to our old house in . I want to hang out with my brother when he is four, when he is bright and goofy. His hair is blond and he is three feet tall.... Below us is the wide shining bay, with no trace of the fog he loves to watch come in... I will tell him to be brave. That he will be fine. If I think about it closely enough, maybe it is true. Maybe it is happening right now, in one of the universes, in one of the dimensions that I can't see. He tilts his head, voice excited, telling me about a supernova. There, smell the eucalyptus. Try to imagine it better. Nothing--is unattainable." And that is what the work in LAR wants to believe. That we can push ourselves to the edge of the world and reinvent story, language, what is possible.

Skiers flooded off toward another lift that would take them down to a high- altitude corrie, where a chalet and slopes waited. He didn't ski, never had, never wanted to. He made his way through the visitor center, identified by a yellow placard as MYncher Haus. A restaurant dominated one half of the building, the rest housed a theater, a snack bar, an observatory, souvenir shops, and a weather station. He pushed through thick glass doors and stepped out onto a railed terrace. Bracing Alpine air stung his lips. According to Stephanie Nelle his contact should be waiting on the observation deck. One thing was obvious. Ten thousand feet in the high Alps certainly added a height-ened measure of privacy to their meeting. The Zugspitze lay on the border. A succession of snowy crags rose south toward Austria. To the north spanned a soup- bowl valley ringed by rock- ribbed peaks. A gauze of frosty mist shielded the German vil-lage of Garmisch and its companion, Partenkirchen. Both were sports meccas, and the region catered not only to skiing but also bobsledding, skating, and curling. More sports he'd avoided. The observation deck was deserted save for an elderly couple and a few skiers who'd apparently paused to enjoy the view. He'd come to solve a mystery, one that had preyed on his mind ever since that day when the men in uniforms came to tell his mother that her husband was dead.
