Teaching and Its Predicaments

Teaching and Its Predicaments

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Burbules, Nicholas C. / Hansen, David T. / *, Editor, PUBLISHER: Westview Press, Teaching is a complex and challenging endeavor. Teachers are continually faced with difficult choices in which competing values are set in tension with one another. The interests of all students, and of other groups and constituencies, can rarely be served at the same time. Different educational goals, each desirable in and of itself, often place incompatible demands on teachers, especially in light of the limited resources and time available to most of them. Of course, teaching does have its satisfactions and fulfillments, but increasingly those rewards must be sought in the context of challenges that reflect the competing expectations society places upon educators. These essays tackle important aspects of the complex, often conflicted contexts of teaching. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of teaching, offering candid analysis of the difficulties and trade-offs inherent in teaching practice, while suggesting ways to productively address a given conflict. Together, the chapters speak honestly to the realities and challenges of teaching, without downplaying the ideals that draw teachers into education in the first place.

Writing about Patients: Responsibilities, Risks, and

Writing about Patients: Responsibilities, Risks, and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kantrowitz, Judy Leopold, PUBLISHER: Other Press (NY), An important new study of the clinical conundrum surrounding the publication of patient material. The publication, presentation, and discussion of case studies are essential to the dialogue of psychoanalysis. However, presenting patient material to the public by either disguising the patient's identity or asking for the patient's consent presents a clinical dilemma. In a series of interviews, Judy Leopold Kantrowitz asks 141 analysts not only to describe their thoughts about disguising a patient versus asking a patient's consent to appear in a paper, but also their perceptions of the clinical ramifications of a patient reading the material, whether by accident or design. In first-hand accounts, both analysts-as-patients and patients who are not themselves analysts relate the experience of reading about themselves, and reflect on the impact that reading had on their view of their analysts, themselves, and the analytic work. Ethical concerns about confidentiality and decision making are examined both in theory and in the context of their clinical effect. Throughout the book, Kantrowitz examines the conscious and unconscious motives for analysts in writing about a patient, ultimately demonstrating that the conflict between the need to preserve patient privacy and the need for a literature including clinical material is not easily resolved.

The Essence of Anthropology.

The Essence of Anthropology.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Haviland, William A., PUBLISHER: Wadsworth Publishing Company, Haviland et al. present anthropology from a holistic, four-field perspective using three unifying themes to provide a framework for the text: the varied ways human groups face the many challenges of existence, the connections between human culture and human biology, and the disparate impact of globalization on peoples and cultures around the world. Between the superlative writing-which instructors raved about in their reviews-and the strong pedagogical program, the text is designed to help students grasp the concepts and their relevance to today's complex world. Such pedagogy as the "Challenge Issue" at the beginning of each chapter and the "Questions for Reflection" at the end of each chapter--which are linked to the Challenge Issue--provide a framework that ensures that the chapters consistently focus on and reflect the text's themes. Boxed features such as "Biocultural Connections," "Original Studies," and "Anthropology Applied" hone in on particularly interesting examples that give students deeper insight into the meaning and relevance of a wide range of topics covered in the general narrative.

Scholarly Journals in the New Digital World

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Beaudry, Guylaine / Boismenu, G'Rard / Boismenu, Gerard, PUBLISHER: University of Calgary Press, The world of scholarly and not-for-profit publishing is facing many challenges at the start of the twenty-first century, from technical and organizational factors to prevailing social and economic conditions. Literary Studies and the Pursuits of Reading

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Downing, Eric / Hess, Jonathan M. / Benson, Richard V., PUBLISHER: Camden House (NY), Thirty years ago, when theory emerged as integral to literary studies, investigations into the nature of reading dominated academic criticism. Since then, as cultural studies and historical approaches have gained ascendancy, critical focus on reading has waned. This collection of new essays by leading scholars of German and comparative literature, inspired by the work of the long-time and influential scholar of reading Clayton Koelb, puts the study of reading back at center stage, considering current theory on reading, emotion, and affect alongside historical investigations into cultural practices of reading as they have changed over time. Topics addressed include ancient practices of magic reading; Christian conversionary reading; the emergence of silent reading in the Middle Ages; Renaissance ekphrastic reading; homeopathy, reading and Romanticism; and German-Jewish reading cultures in the nineteenth century. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of literary criticism, German Studies, comparative literature, and European history. Contributors: Richard V. Benson, Stanley Corngold, Eric Downing, Darryl Gless, Ruth V. Gross, Jonathan Hess, Janice Hewlett Koelb, Alice Kuzniar, Ann Marie Rasmussen, Jeffrey L. Getting a PhD in Law

Getting a PhD in Law

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Morris, Caroline, PUBLISHER: Hart Publishing (UK), Getting a PhD in Law is a unique guide to obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Law in the UK. While there are a wide range of study guides for PhD students in the social sciences and other science-based disciplines, there is very little information available on the process of obtaining a PhD in law. Research degrees in law share some attributes with those in related disciplines, such as the humanities and social sciences. However, the legal methodology and the place of the PhD in the young lawyer's career creates unique challenges that have not been addressed by existing guides. Getting a PhD in Law fills this gap, providing an accessible guide to the process, from topic selection to thesis publication. This readable and informative guide is written by two graduates of the successful PhD program at the School of Law, King's College London. The book draws on interviews and case studies with students, supervisors, and examiners. Getting a PhD in Law will be essential reading for the growing numbers of PhD students in the UK's many law schools, as well as those internationally who wish to learn from the UK's best practice.
