The Bishop's Palace: Architecture and Authority in Medieval

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Miller, Maureen, PUBLISHER: Cornell University Press, This lavishly illustrated book looks at the art and architecture of episcopal palaces as expressions of power and ideology. Tracing the history of the bishop's residence in the urban centers of northern Italy over the Middle Ages, Maureen C. Miller asks why this once rudimentary and highly fortified structure called a domus became a complex and elegant "palace" (palatium) by the late twelfth century. Miller argues that the change reflects both the emergence of a distinct clerical culture and the attempts of bishops to maintain authority in public life. She relates both to the Gregorian reform movement, which set new standards for clerical deportment and at the same time undercut episcopal claims to secular power. As bishops lost temporal authority in their cities to emerging communal governments, they compensated architecturally and competed with the communes for visual and spatial dominance in the urban center. This rivalry left indelible marks on the layout and character of Italian cities. Moreover, Miller contends, this struggle for power had highly significant, but mixed, results for western Christianity. On the one hand, as bishops lost direct governing authority in their cities, they devised ways to retain status, influence, and power through cultural practices. This response to loss was highly creative. On the other hand, their loss of secular control led bishops to emphasize their spiritual powers and to use them to obtain temporal ends. The coercive use of spiritual authority contributed to the emergence of a "persecuting society" in the central Middle Ages.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: De Lombaerde, Philippe, PUBLISHER: Springer, Global governance is a concern of not only global organisations but also of all individual states and of regional co-operation agreements among sovereign states. In , the United Nations University has launched UNU-CRIS, a research and training programme on comparative regional integration to study the role of regional integration in global governance. The present first volume of the World Report on Regional Integration is a timely product of the research undertaken at UNU-CRIS. This new series of World Reports will certainly contribute to the discussion on the interaction between regional and global governance. And by bringing together insights from different parts of the UN system, in particular the five UN regional economic commissions and UNCTAD, this report will also contribute to a better understanding of the role of regions in the UN. Hans van Ginkel, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Rector of UNU The World Report on Regional Integration brings together a well-balanced mix of economic analysis, facts and political perspectives on the topic of regional integration. The most valuable and unique contribution of this volume is the enhanced clarity it brings to the complex picture of trade and investment integration, the entanglement of which points to the need for more effective regional governance as a building block of multilateral governance in this area. As the worlda (TM)s most dynamic trading region, Asia and the Pacific is a key player in this process, and the UNESCAP secretariat, in its service to the region, will continue to accord high priority to this policy objective. Kim Hak-Su, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and ExecutiveSecretary of UNESCAP

European Union Governance

European Union Governance

Karen Heard-Laureote European Union Governance Routledge The European Commission has increasingly focused on the benefits it can derive from the greater participation of organized civil society in its role and activities. In the face of general decline in public trust in the institutions of government, it facilitated and encouraged new channels of access and consultation opportunities as a means to legitimize its position within the European political System. Karen Heard-Laureote's comparative analysis of four European Commission advisory forums innovatively investigates the existence of a conflict between the capacities of such forums to deliver standards of good governance. The author questions whether these venues can provide efficiency gains via the production of sufficient policy output without delays or deadlocks at reasonable cost and sustain adequate democratic credentials such as legitimacy. This study makes a significiant contribution to its field by pursuing contemporary legitimacy debates asking whether under certain conditions or in certain policy-making contexts, legitimacy and efficiency may be reconciled or become at least partially compatible in European Commission committees. nuovo

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Reed, David / David Reed / Kaimowitz, David, PUBLISHER: Routledge, This book confronts the stark realities of how the economic and political reforms imposed in southern Africa have affected sectors based on agriculture, mining, tourism and forestry and what they have meant for the poor and the environment. It asks why the reforms evolved as they did, who has gained and who has lost. It shows that, with very few exceptions, the changes have benefited foreign companies and domestic elites, fostering corruption and monopolies and undermining civil society and political life. From this it explains what will have to be done by the international development and business communities to reverse these trends and stimulate the development of effective institutions for long-term, sustainable prosperity and social vitality.

Co-Creating a Public Philosophy for Future Generations

Co-Creating a Public Philosophy for Future Generations

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kim, Tae-Chang / Dator, James / Dator, James A., PUBLISHER: Praeger, When making decisions, governments can and should strive consciously to balance the demands of the present with the needs of future generations. Various advocates for greater governmental foresight have created new processes or institutions within existing systems of democratic government. These include long-range planning departments, futures commissions, requirements for future-impact statements on proposed legislation, environmental protection agencies, and offices of technology assessment. But, as the contributors to this volume demonstrate, much more remains to be done. Some of the provocative questions posed by this book include: What is a public philosophy oriented to the needs of future generations necessary, and why is it necessary? What are the major examples of actual experiments in future-oriented governance? What were their successes and failures, and the reasons for each? And finally, what are the obstacles to future-oriented governance, and how might they be overcome? The authors of the essays in this volume suggest answers based on their extensive experience in working with governments, trying to help them incorporate techniques of foresight into their institutions and practices.
