This way of thinking has invaded our personal relationships and undermined our capacities for friendship and loyalty to those who do not serve our immediate interests. As George P. Fletcher writes, it is time for loyal bonds, born of history and experience, to prevail both over impartial morality and the self-interested thinking of the market trader. In this extended essay, George P. Fletcher offers an account of loyalty that illuminates its role in our relationships with family and friends, our ties to country, and the commitment of the religious to God and their community. Fletcher opposes the traditional view of the moral self as detached from context and history. He argues instead that loyalty, not impartial detachment, should be the central feature of our moral and political lives. Writing as a political "liberal," he claims that a commitment to country is necessary to improve the lot of the poor and disadvantaged. This commitment to country may well require greater reliance on patriotic rituals in education and a reconsideration of the Supreme Court's extending the First Amendment to protect flag burning. Bringing to bear his expertise as a law professor, Fletcher reasons that the legal systems should defer to existing relationships of loyalty. Thus surrogate mothers should not be forced to surrender and betray their children, spouses should not be required to testify against each other in court, parents should not be prevented from willing their property to their children, and the religiously committed should not be forced to act contrary to conscience. Yet the question remains: Aren't loyalty, and particularly patriotism, dangerously one-sided? Indeed, they are, but no more than are love and friendship. The challenge, Fletcher maintains, is to overcome the distorting effects of impartial morality and to develop a morality of loyalty properly suited to our emotional and spiritual lives. In its scope, intelligence and elegance, The Stranger's Child can be placed in the great tradition of the novel alongside epics by Marcel Proust and Anthony Powell. And yet, in its subtly political exploration of homosexuality in English society, it deals with an utterly contemporary subject in an utterly contemporary way. The Stranger's Child""begins with sixteen-year-old Daphne Sawle sitting in a hammock in the garden of Two Acres, the family home in suburban London. She is making a show of reading Tennyson before her brother George arrives to visit with his Cambridge friend Cecil Valance, a handsome, assured and sometimes outrageous young man with a burgeoning reputation as a poet. After a tantalizing and dramatic weekend Cecil writes a long poem in Daphne's autograph album as a parting gift. It is titled "Two Acres," and both Daphne and George (whose feelings for Cecil also go well beyond mere friendship) immediately see how important the poem is - but none of them can foresee the complex and lasting effects it will have on all their lives. When the next section of the novel begins, everything has changed: Daphne is married to Cecil's brother Dudley Valance; George to a historian named Madeleine; and Cecil is dead, killed by a sniper in World War One. A Cabinet officer and man of letters named Sebastian Stokes has come to Corley Court, the Valance family's country home, to put together an edition of Cecil's poemsand speak to each family member in turn about him. He is especially curious about Cecil's personal (and passionate) letters and unpublished poems, papers that seem to have gone missing, and whose absence will loom paradoxically through the rest of the novel. The book leaps forward and we are at another party, this one to celebrate Daphne's seventieth birthday. George is now the acclaimed historian G.F. Sawle; Daphne's son Wilfrid, a charming boy in the previous section, has grown into a nervous and somehow fractured adult. We meet Peter Rowe, a music teacher at the boarding school that now occupies Corley Court, and his boyfriend, Paul Bryant, a bank employee with a feeling for Cecil's poetry. Soon Paul is taking up an idea that Peter abandoned: to write a biography of Cecil Valance. EIT RawMaterials seeks an Alumni Manager About us EIT RawMaterials, initiated and funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, is the largest consortium in the raw materials sector worldwide. EIT RawMaterials unites more than 120 core and associate partners and 190 project partners from industry, research institutions and higher education from over 20 EU countries. They collaborate on finding new, innovative solutions to improving the raw materials sector along the entire value chain – from extraction to processing, recycling and reuse. The EIT RawMaterials Alumni creates new events, new services and new opportunities for people in the EIT RawMaterials community to continue to connect with each other and increases access to existing EIT RawMaterials events and services. Our mission is to support and complement the work of EIT RawMaterials, add value for individual alumni members, the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) as a whole and more widely to EIT and the raw materials sector, and to contribute to the long-term legacy of EIT RawMaterials. The Alumni Manager will be responsible for the overall coordination and management of EIT RawMaterials Alumniactivities. The alumni manager will: Support EIT RawMaterials in developing the alumni network, promoting interaction with other stakeholders in the EIT RawMaterials communityand in implementing plans for events, information services and working towards a mentoring programme Organise, attend and participate in alumni events Introduce the necessary software platform to manage a database, communications and website Keep members informed and provide tailored news and information through the website, newsletter and social media on events, courses, publications etc (within and beyond EIT RawMaterials) Support the EIT RawMaterials AlumniBoard to implement plans and to manage Board meetings and communications Coordinate closely with the Board and with EIT RawMaterials Document and follow up on important actions and decisions from meetings Maintain and develop relations with EIT and with other EIT KICs and in particular their alumni associations Provide written and/or verbal reports to the Management and Executive Board on regular occasions Travel across Europe. Qualifications and experience An academic degree 5 years professional experience incl. experience of working in a complex organisation Background in alumni work High English-language proficiency (level C1) with excellent verbal, written and presentation skills Very good organisation and coordination skills including attention to detail and multitasking A combination of drive, tenacity and diplomacy Experience using computers for a variety of tasks Competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and Outlook.
