Up Above the World

Up Above the World

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bowles, Paul, PUBLISHER: Harper Perennial, On the terrace of an eloborate hilltop apartment overlooking a Central American capital, four people sit making polite conversation. The American couple -- an elderly physician and his young wife -- are tourists. Their host, whom they have just met, is a young man of striking good looks and charm. The girl, who is his mistress, is very young and very beautiful. Sitting there, with drinks in their hands, watching the sunset, the Slades seem to be experiencing the sort of fortunate chance encounter that travelers cherish. But amidst the civilities and small talk, one remark proves prophetic. The host says to the American woman: "It's not exactly what you think." Masterfully -- with the poetic control that has always characterized his work -- Paul Bowles leads the reader beneath the surface of hospitality and luxury into a tortuous maze of human relationships and shifting moods, until what seems at first a merely casual encounter is seen to be one rooted in viciousness and horror.

Understanding Police and Police Work: Psychological Issues

Understanding Police and Police Work: Psychological Issues

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Yarmey, A. Daniel / Harrison, Marina / Rosenfeld, Lucy, PUBLISHER: New York University Press, According to social psychologist A. Daniel Yarmey, police officers find the nature of their work necessitates that they behave to some extent like applied psychologists. Many police officers, of course, do not have any special training in this or any allied field, nor do they have an understanding of what cognitive or social psychology might be able to tell them about the behavior of those with whom they are likely to deal in their daily work. Similarly, psychologists are habitually asked by the courts to present research regarding eyewitness testimony, forensic evidence, and competency to stand trial, yet psychologists frequently lack any real awareness of policing or of police officers. "Understanding Police and Police Work," the first systematic an comprehensive review of the psychology of police and their work, focuses on the psychological basis of police officers' interactions with society. It shows how psychology and other social sciences can contribute to an understanding of police behavior as well as the behavior of citizens and other professionals with whom the police are involved.

The Long Winter Ends

The Long Winter Ends

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Thomas, Newton G. / Mulligan, William Hughes, Jr., PUBLISHER: Wayne State University Press, A reprint of the novel by Newton G. Thomas, The Long Winter Ends tells the story of a year in the life of a young emigrant miner who leaves Cornwall, a peninsula at the southwestern end of England, to work in the copper mines of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Typical of emigrant miners drawn to the new mines in America after copper and tin mine closings in Cornwall, Jim Holman journeys to Michigan from Stoke, Cornwall, and spends his first year living in a boarding house with other Cornish miners. Through Jim's story, The Long Winter Ends offers a glimpse into the lives of an often neglected immigrant group that played an important role in the development of the Great Lakes and American mining industries since the s. Drawing on his own experience as a young Cornish immigrant in the mining communities of the Upper Peninsula, Thomas incorporated firsthand knowledge of the work routines of underground mining, as well as the inflections and patterns of Cornish speech, into this novel. With an introduction providing information about the cultural history of the Cornish, this narrative traces a Cornish emigrant's experience, including details about the failure of the mines in Cornwall, his hopes to preserve Cornish traditions in America, and then finally his acceptance of a future in America.

The Course of American Democratic Thought

The Course of American Democratic Thought

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gabriel, Ralph Henry, PUBLISHER: Greenwood Press, In this third edition of The Course of American Democratic Thought, Ralph H. Gabriel, with the assistance of Robert H. Walker, brings his seminal study up to date by taking into account the complicated and fascinating interplay between the events of the past thirty years and the American democratic faith. Although many of the trends had been anticipated in the earlier editions of this work, those discussions only paved the way for the present chronicle of democratic faith in an era that combines nostalgia for traditional values with an almost incredible rate of technical innovation. Gabriel argues that the values he first summarized in the foreword to the first edition, written thirty years ago, are still a basic point of reference for social and political argument. But, he asks, are they the same basic values? The title he chose for the final section of the second edition, "The American Democratic Faith Survives in a Time of Revolution and Violence," still seems appropriate, he believes, but there is no doubt that this faith has changed both in context and meaning since that time. This third edition traces this evolution during the last thirty years. Only minor changes and corrections have been made in the first twenty-eight chapters; the bibliography has been updated, but the documentation stands. The last five chapters of this edition represent the addition of considerable new material and the revision and rearrangement of what was already there.

Chesnutt and Realism: A Study of the Novels

Chesnutt and Realism: A Study of the Novels

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Simmons, Ryan, PUBLISHER: University Alabama Press, An important examination of Charles Chesnutt as a practitioner of realism. With the release of previously unpublished novels and a recent proliferation of critical studies on his life and work, Charles W. Chesnutt () has emerged as a major American writer of his time--the age of Howells, Twain, and Wharton. In "Chesnutt and Realism, "Ryan Simmons breaks new ground by theorizing how understandings of literary realism have shaped, and can continue to shape, the reception of Chesnutt's work. Although Chesnutt is typically acknowledged as the most prominent African American writer of the realist period, little attention has been paid to the central question of this study: what does it mean to call Chesnutt a realist? A writer whose career was circumscribed by the dismal racial politics of his era, Chesnutt refused to conform to literary conventions for depicting race. Nor did he use his imaginative skills to evade the realities he and other African Americans faced. Rather, he experimented with ways of portraying reality that could elicit an appropriate, proportionate response to it, as Simmons demonstrates in extended readings of each of Chestnutt's novels, including important unpublished works that have been overlooked by previous critics. "Chesnutt and Realism" also addresses a curiously neglected subject in American literary studies--the relationship between American literary realism and race. By taking Chesnutt seriously as a contributor to realism, this book articulates the strategies by which one African American intellectual helped to define the discourses that influenced his fate. Ryan Simmons is Assistant Professor of English at Utah Valley State College

To 'Joy My Freedom to 'Joy My Freedom: Southern Black

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hunter, Tera, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, As the Civil War drew to a close, newly emancipated black women workers made their way to Atlanta--the economic hub of the newly emerging urban and industrial south--in order to build an independent and free life on the rubble of their enslaved past. In an original and dramatic work of scholarship, Tera Hunter traces their lives in the postbellum era and reveals the centrality of their labors to the African-American struggle for freedom and justice. Household laborers and washerwomen were constrained by their employers' domestic worlds but constructed their own world of work, play, negotiation, resistance, and community organization. Hunter follows African-American working women from their newfound optimism and hope at the end of the Civil War to their struggles as free domestic laborers in the homes of their former masters. We witness their drive as they build neighborhoods and networks and their energy as they enjoy leisure hours in dance halls and clubs. We learn of their militance and the way they resisted efforts to keep them economically depressed and medically victimized. Finally, we understand the despair and defeat provoked by Jim Crow laws and segregation and how they spurred large numbers of black laboring women to migrate north. Hunter weaves a rich and diverse tapestry of the culture and experience of black women workers in the post-Civil War south. Through anecdote and data, analysis and interpretation, she manages to penetrate African-American life and labor and to reveal the centrality of women at the inception--and at the heart--of the new south.

Hispanic Influence on American English

Hispanic Influence on American English

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Panger, Eva, PUBLISHER: VDM Verlag, Over several years the United States of America have been facing a continuous inflow of Spanish-speaking - Hispanic - immigrants coming first of all from the countries of Latin America. They represent the second largest minority group of the country, furthermore, their language has a significant impact on American English. Even nowadays it seems that this process is still going on. The development of Spanglish, the mixture of English and Spanish languages originate in such historical factors. Therefore, in the first part of the book I tried to approach this phenomenon from historical point of view. On the second hand, I analized the Hispanic influence on the American English dialect taking into consideration the linguistic and literary aspects. Finally, in the last part of the work the reader can investigate how English and Spanish languages interact in cases of language learning process. The analysis should be especially useful for those who intend to be deeply involved in the study and research of the history of American English.
