Life, Death, and Doughnuts

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kasdin, Karen / Kasdin, Karin, PUBLISHER: Strategic Book Publishing, It is and the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City is teeming with women. Over doughnuts, Sarah, Mitzi, Iris, and Ellie form a quirky quartet of secretaries-to-be. What ensues is a lifelong friendship carried out primarily through monthly dinner parties composed of the four women and their tag-along husbands. Over a span of 50 years, children are born, hearts are broken, a president resigns, a war is lost, careers peak and crash, weight is gained and lost and gained again, and all the while food is burned, fondued, flambed, whipped up, and brought in. Sadly, but not uncommonly, the husbands pass away one by one, revealing the unfortunate fact that most women outlive their mates. The girlfriends' individual responses to widowhood illustrate that "moving on" can have a host of meanings and that grief has no time frame. As the friends face downtime, distance, and loss, each discovers that a 50-year friendship, a healthy dose of humor, and an occasional doughnut can trump whatever else life drops in your path. Karin Kasdin has authored four books, the most recent of which is Watsamatta U: A Get-A-Grip Guide to Staying Sane through Your Child's College Application Process. She currently writes a parenting blog for The Faster Times, which can be viewed at thefastertimes.com. Kasdin grew up in Rochester, New York, and now lives and writes in Bucks County, Pennsylvania where she and her husband have raised three sons.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hicks, Robert L. / Parks, Bradley C. / Roberts, J. Timmons, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Every year, billions of dollars of environmental aid flow from the rich governments of the North to the poor governments of the South. Why do donors provide this aid? What do they seek to achieve? How effective is the aid given? And does it always go to the places of greatest environmental need? From the first Earth Summit in Stockholm in to the G8 Gleneagles meeting in , the issue of the impact of aid on the global environment has been the subject of vigorous protest and debate. How much progress has there been in improving environmental protection and clean-up in the developing world? What explains the patterns of environmental aid spending and distribution - is it designed to address real problems, achieve geopolitical or commercial gains abroad, or buy political mileage at home? And what are the consequences for the estimated 4 million people that die each year from air pollution, unsafe drinking water, and lack of sanitation? All of these questions and many more are addressed in this groundbreaking text, which is based on the authors' work compiling the most comprehensive dataset of foreign aid ever assembled. By evaluating the likely environment impact of over development projects by more than 50 donors to over 170 recipient nations between and , Greening Aid represents a unique, state of the art picture of what is happening in foreign assistance, and its impact on the environment. Greening Aid explains major trends and shifts over the last three decades, ranks donors according to their performance, and offers case studies which compare and contrast donors and types of environmental aid.

Antico rotolo '600 kano tanyu giappone periodo edo tokugawa

Cod. 606 T ANTICO ROTOLO KANO TANYU Periodo Tokugawa - Edo Pittore: Kano Tan'yu () GIAPPONE OKano Tan'yu () Japanese watercolor scroll painting Kano Tanâ€(TM)yu, original name Kano Morinobu (born March , Kyotoâ€"died November , Edo[Tokyo]), the most-influential Kano painter of the Tokugawa period in Japan Kano Tanâ€(TM)yuâ€(TM)s conservative choice of subject matter (e.g., historical figures embodying Confucian ethicalprecepts) and his return to the subdued tones and designs of the early Kano painters set the standards for later Kano artists. His studied brushwork and dignified portrayal of figures appear in Confucius and Two Disciples, a screen painting now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The extent to which his artreflected the taste of the military rulers of his day may be deduced from the honours bestowed upon him. At age 17 he was appointed painter to the shogun and given an estate in the district of Edo (now Tokyo) called Kajibashi, which became the name associated with his branch of the Kano school. He decorated the walls of various palaces and castles, including Nijo Castle in Kyoto, the shogunâ€(TM)s castle at Nagoya, and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. He painted the scrolls illustrating events in the life of the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu, and decorated the porticoes of Ieyasuâ€(TM)s mausoleum at the Tosho Shrine in Nikko. At age 34 Kano assumed the temple name Tanâ€(TM)yu. Two years later he was raised to an exalted position in the Buddhist clergy. Together with his grandfather Eitoku and his great-great-grandfather Motonobu, he is celebrated as one of the “three famous brushes” of the Kano family.

Gospel Tracks Through Texas: The Mission of the Chapel Car

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Taylor, Wilma Rugh, PUBLISHER: Texas A&M University Press, In a different kind of railroad car rolled into Texas, bringing the "good news" of the evangelical Gospel to transient railroad workers and far-flung communities alike. A ministry to railroad men and their families lay at the heart of chapel car work, which over a period of fifty years saw thirteen rail chapel cars minister to thousands of towns, mainly west of the Mississippi. Author Wilma Rugh Taylor's portrayal of this ministry for the one car, Good Will, which served Texas, provides a view of life in towns such as Denison, Texline, Marshall, San Antonio, Laredo, Abilene, and Dalhart. The railroads that carried the Texas chapel car included the Texas & Pacific; the Missouri, Kansas & Topeka; the Southern Pacific; the International & Great Northern; and the Mexican International. Taylor writes about the travels of Good Will with fondness and an eye for detail. She describes the car itself (its living area was just nine by eighteen feet with a decorative rococo stencil on the ceiling), the missionary couples who traveled in it, and the services they held. She considers the philanthropists who supported the mobile chapel and the guilt and other motives that moved them. She looks at the issues the chapel car faced as it rolled into town: temperance, turbulent religious rivalries, racism and immigration, the role of Masons and other lodges in rural society, and even the devastating Great Storm of in Galveston. A novel window into Texas and railroad history, this book tells a warmly human story set on a larger stage of charitable works, evangelical fervor, and social change.

Status Signals: A Sociological Study of Market Competition

Status Signals: A Sociological Study of Market Competition

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Podolny, Joel M., PUBLISHER: Princeton University Press, Why are elite jewelers reluctant to sell turquoise, despite strong demand? Why did leading investment bankers shun junk bonds for years, despite potential profits? "Status Signals" is the first major sociological examination of how concerns about status affect market competition. Starting from the basic premise that status pervades the ties producers form in the marketplace, Joel Podolny shows how anxieties about status influence whom a producer does (or does not) accept as a partner, the price a producer can charge, the ease with which a producer enters a market, how the producer's inventions are received, and, ultimately, the market segments the producer can (and should) enter. To achieve desired status, firms must offer more than strong past performance and product quality--they must also send out and manage social and cultural signals. Through detailed analyses of market competition across a broad array of industries--including investment banking, wine, semiconductors, shipping, and venture capital--Podolny demonstrates the pervasive impact of status. Along the way, he shows how corporate strategists, tempted by the profits of a market that would negatively affect their status, consider not only whether to enter the market but also whether they can alter the public's perception of the market. Podolny also examines the different ways in which a firm can have status. Wal-Mart, for example, has low status among the rich as a place to shop, but high status among the rich as a place to invest. "Status Signals" provides a systematic understanding of market dynamics that have--until now--not been fully appreciated.

Salvation City

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nunez, Sigrid, PUBLISHER: Riverhead Books, From the critically acclaimed author of "The Last of Her Kind," a breakout novel that imagines the aftermath of pandemic flu, as seen through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy uncertain of his destiny. His family's sole survivor after a flu pandemic has killed large numbers of people worldwide, Cole Vining is lucky to have found refuge with the evangelical Pastor Wyatt and his wife in a small town in southern Indiana. As the world outside has grown increasingly anarchic, Salvation City has been spared much of the devastation, and its residents have renewed their preparations for the Rapture. Grateful for the shelter and love of his foster family (and relieved to have been saved from the horrid, overrun orphanages that have sprung up around the country), Cole begins to form relationships within the larger community. But despite his affection for this place, he struggles with memories of the very different world in which he was reared. Is there room to love both Wyatt and his parents? Are they still his parents if they are no longer there? As others around him grow increasingly fixated on the hope of salvation and the new life to come through the imminent Rapture, Cole begins to conceive of a different future for himself, one in which his own dreams of heroism seem within reach. Written in Sigrid Nunez's deceptively simple style, "Salvation City" is a story of love, betrayal, and forgiveness, weaving the deeply affecting story of a young boy's transformation with a profound meditation on the meaning of belief and heroism.

As I remember, it might be about the 20th of February in the evening late, when the mate, having the watch, came into the round-house and told us he saw a flash of fire, and heard a gun fired; and while he was telling us of it, a boy came in and told us the boatswain heard another. This made us all run out upon the quarterdeck, where for a while we heard nothing; but in a few minutes we saw a very great light, and found that there was some very terrible fire at a distance; immediately we had recourse to our reckonings, in which we all agreed that there could be no land that way in which the fire showed itself, no, not for five hundred leagues, for it appeared at WNW. Upon this, we concluded it must be some ship on fire at sea; and as, by our hearing the noise of guns just before, we concluded that it could not be far off, we stood directly towards it, and were presently satisfied we should discover it, because the further we sailed, the greater the light appeared; though, the weather being hazy, we could not perceive anything but the light for a while. In about half-an-hour's sailing, the wind being fair for us, though not much of it, and the weather clearing up a little, we could plainly discern that it was a great ship on fire in the middle of the sea....

The Twenty-Five Year Century: A South Vietnamese General

The Twenty-Five Year Century: A South Vietnamese General

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lam, Quang Thi / Thi, Lam Quang, PUBLISHER: University of North Texas Press, For Victor Hugo, the nineteenth century could be remembered by only its first two years, which established peace in Europe and France's supremacy on the continent. For Gen. Lam Quang Thi, the twentieth century had only twenty-five years: from to , during which the Republic of Vietnam and its army grew up and collapsed with the fall of Saigon. This is the story of those twenty-five years. General Thi fought in the Indochina War as a battery commander on the side of the French. When Viet Minh aggression began after the Geneva Accords, he served in the nascent Vietnamese National Army, and his career covers this army's entire lifespan. He was deputy commander of the 7th Infantry Division, and in he assumed command of the 9th Infantry Division. In , at the age of thirty-three, he became one of the youngest generals in the Vietnamese Army. He participated in the Tet Offensive before being removed from the front lines for political reasons. When North Vietnam launched the Great Offensive, he was brought back to the field and eventually promoted to commander of an Army Corps Task Force along the Demilitarized Zone. With the fall of Saigon, he left Vietnam and emigrated to the United States. Like his tactics during battle, General Thi pulls no punches in his denunciation of the various regimes of the Republic and complacency and arrogance toward Vietnam in the policies of both France and the United States. Without lapsing into bitterness, this is finally a tribute to the soldiers who fell on behalf of a good cause.
