Nation Building and Develoment Assistance in Africa:

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ishikawa, Kaoru, PUBLISHER: Palgrave MacMillan, Sub-Saharan Africa seems to be forgotten in the post-cold war era. But Kaoru Ishikawa's analysis of Africa's history and its political and economic development suggests that a brighter future is in prospect for the nations of Africa. The African nations hosted dynamic societies prior to the slave trade era, and many of the obstacles to their future prosperity and dynamism have been removed. The focus of the book is on how African countries and the international community beyond Africa can work together to realize this potential and build on recent improvements, notably in health and the position of women in society. The ability of South Africa--no longer an international pariah--to be a locomotive for growth is assessed.

Soweto

Soweto

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Laufer, Stephen / Tsedu, Matada, PUBLISHER: Arnoldsche Verlagsanstalt GmbH, The rising of the black youths 25 years ago, on the 16 June , marks an historical turning- point in South Africa. For the first time, black stood up against the apartheid regime fo the government. Their protest set into motion the long final phase fo white supremacy in the country. For thier lives. Today, Soweto with its great disparities between recently acquired affluence and the old-time misery of the squatters symbolises urbanised South Africa in transition - a country that still vividly carries the scars of its apartheid past in the black townships on the outskirts of Johannesberg, for example. In spite of this, the new South Africa shows promise for the future. This publication includes not only an interview with Nelson Mandela, but also 100 exemplary, striking photographs of Soweto's past and present. It is an impressive photographic account of the contrarities that haunt this South African myth.

Questions/Places/Voices/Seasons

Questions/Places/Voices/Seasons

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fischer, Norman, PUBLISHER: Singing Horse Press, Poetry. QUESTIONS/PLACES/VOICES/SEASONS continues and expands the innovative meditational poetry Norman Fischer has explored in earlier books, such as SLOWLY BUT DEARLY, SUCCESS, and I WAS BLOWN BACK. The two long serial poems that anchor QUESTIONS/PLACES/VOICES/SEASONS, "Charlotte's Way" and "Seasons," will feel quite familiar to Fischer's many readers. But he also inaugurates a new form of writing in this new book in which he inhabits the voices of others, such as Alberto Caeiro, Reb Yosl of Kemenetz, Elena Rivera, and Saigyo Hoshi. The combination of these distinct forms of writing create a compelling new addition to Fischer's already impressive body of work.

The Catcher in the Rye.

The Catcher in the Rye.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Salinger, J. D., PUBLISHER: Little Brown and Company, Anyone who has read J. D. Salinger's New Yorker stories - particularly A Perfect Day for Bananafish, Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut, The Laughing Man, and For Esme - With Love and Squalor, will not be surprised by the fact that his first novel is full of children. The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. There are many voices in this novel: children's voices, adult voices, underground voices-but Holden's voice is the most eloquent of all. Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of mixed pain and pleasure. However, like most lovers and clowns and poets of the higher orders, he keeps most of the pain to, and for, himself. The pleasure he gives away, or sets aside, with all his heart. It is there for the reader who can handle it to keep.

The author examines the special political and economic problems which face the new East African states of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, taking Uganda, where she lived for five years, as a case study. Black Political Thought in the Making of South

Black Political Thought in the Making of South

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Halisi, C. R. D., PUBLISHER: Indiana University Press,..". a comprehensive analytical survey of the multidimensional evolution of black political thought in South Africa's politicization process." -- Choice "Many citizens experience a sense of reluctance to share a single national identity with all of those who are defined by law to be their compatriots. This problem can be explained and surmounted, but it cannot be evaded by those who aspire to build a stable democracy in South Africa." -- Richard L. Sklar, from the Foreword What will it mean to be a citizen in the new South Africa? This penetrating study analyzes the issues of dual citizenship, black consciousness, populism, racial proletarianization and their interaction with various political ideologies. Halisi's analysis has practical implications for the development of political identity in the new South Africa.

Slavery and Colonial Rule in Africa

Slavery and Colonial Rule in Africa

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Miers, Suzanne / Klein, Martin A., PUBLISHER: Routledge, Colonial rule started with an endless succession of small, but often brutal, wars of conquest, the moral justification for which was that the European conquerors were bringing 'civilization' to 'darkest Africa'. An intrinsic part of this so-called 'civilizing mission' was the eradication of slave raiding, slave trading and slavery, all of which were widespread on the continent. Some of the studies in this book are on areas where there has been little research, such as the German colonies and the Algerian Sahara. Others throw new light on questions already debated, such as emancipation on the Gold Coast. Some focus on the impact of abolition on particular groups of slaves. Among the themes considered is the role of slaves in their own emancipation, the short and long term results of abolition, the role of the League of Nations, and the vestiges of slavery in Africa today.

Yet despite countless casualties, including some two million displaced people, Western media have paid scant attention to this devastataling conflict -- one of apartheid South Africa's dirty secrets. Victoria Brittain has witnessed the horror and destruction in Angola for longer than almost any other anglophone journalist. In Death of Dignity she uniquely combines a narrative el the war based on historical political analysis with first-hand accounts of many decisive events and portraits of leading personalities. The author examines the origin and course of the conflict and demonstrates how Africa's meal heroic revolution was deliberately derailed and destroyed by United States foreign policy. No More Tears...: Struggles for Land in Mpumalanga, South

No More Tears...: Struggles for Land in Mpumalanga, South

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Levin, Richard / Weiner, Daniel, PUBLISHER: Africa World Press, Three years after South Africa's first nonracial democratic elections, the difficult process of social and economic transformation continues. About one-half of South Africa's 41 million people -- and two-thirds of the African population -- still live in deep poverty. Eight million live in shacks. Land hunger is widespread. Land dispossession caused by colonialism's and apartheid's forced removals and alienation of land and water rights lie at the heart of the repressive regime which the national liberation movement struggled against. In South Africa, land and agrarian reform policy is presently being developed as a top-down exercise increasingly informed by a neo-liberal macroeconomic policy orientation. In the book, this elite driven transition is contrasted with a proposed popular program of radical transformation. The specific role of the World Bank is criticized, and the results of a uniquely participatory research and policy development project recently undertaken in the Eastern Transvaal are presented. The book demonstrates why incorporating extensive knowledge that exists in poor rural areas into development of land and reform policies is essential for truly democratic social and economic transformation. This is an important book that will be useful for policy-makers, academics and the general public alike.
