Hydrology & Mngmt Watersheds-97-2*

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brooks, Kenneth N. / Debano, Leonard / Gregerson, H. M., PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Recent developments show us the urgency of knowing what we're doing when we direct or redirect the flow of water--and of understanding how nature itself manages this precious resource. Hydrology and Management of Watersheds is essential to such an understanding. A basic account of hydrology and watershed management, it provides the fundamental information and practical methods necessary for solving water-use problems in a wide variety of settings and situations--forest or range, agricultural or environmental. The authors present a detailed discussion of the planning, implementation, and evaluation of watershed management, with an emphasis on the social and economic factors involved. They also include a section devoted to specific problems in different regions of the United States and elsewhere in the world. This new edition gives added attention to the cumulative effects of human activities on watersheds, the place of policy and institutions in guiding resource use, and the role of riparian and wetland systems in natural resource management. A key text for students in natural resource management, water resource sciences, and environmental studies, the book will also prove invaluable for administrators, technicians, planners, and natural resource managers.

Population and Development: A Critical Introduction

Population and Development: A Critical Introduction

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Furedi, Frank, PUBLISHER: St. Martin's Press, Many experts believe that population growth is the greatest threat facing humanity. This concise and provocative book discusses both sides of this debate examining the way the arguments have changed and evolved and questioning the assumptions of the main protagonists. Frank Furedi argues that the Western preoccupation with population growth reveals more about the internal concerns of Western societies than the socio-economic development of the South. Examining a broad range of key debates and controversies -- the population bomb in Asia, the culture of a distinct regime of African fertility, the role of education in stabilizing population growth in Kerala -- he contends that the marginalization of the goal of development is the outcome of a narrow concern with population policies.

Reassembling the Social: An Introduction to

Reassembling the Social: An Introduction to

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Latour, Bruno, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Reassembling the Social is a fundamental challenge from one of the world's leading social theorists to how we understand society and the 'social'. Bruno Latour's contention is that the word 'social' as used by Social Scientists has become laden with assumptions to the point where it has become a misnomer. When the adjective is applied to a phenomenon, it is used to indicate a stabilized state of affairs, a bundle of ties that in due course may be used to account for another phenomenon. Latour also finds the word used as if it described a type of material, in a comparable way to an adjective such as 'wooden' or 'steely'. Rather than simply indicating what is already assembled together, it is now used in a way that makes assumptions about the nature of what is assembled. It has become a word that designates two distinct things: a process of assembling: and a type of material, distinct from others. Latour shows why "the social" cannot be thought of as a kind of material or domain, and disputes attempts to provide a "social explanation" of other states of affairs. While these attempts have been productive (and probably necessary) in the past, the very success of the social sciences mean that they are largely no longer so. At the present stage it is no longer possible to inspect the precise constituents entering the social domain. Latour returns to the original meaning of "the social" to redefine the notion and allow it to trace connections again. It will then be possible to resume the traditional goal of the social sciences, but using more refined tools. Drawing on his extensive work examining the "assemblages" of nature, Latour finds it necessary to scrutinize thoroughly the exact content of what is assembled under the umbrella of Society. This approach, a "sociology of associations" has become known as Actor-Network-Theory, and this book is an essential introduction both for those seeking to understand Actor-Network-Theory, or the ideas of one of its most influential proponents.

Classism and Feminist Therapy

Classism and Feminist Therapy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hill Ed D., Marcia / Hill, Marcia / Rothblum, Esther D., PUBLISHER: Routledge, Classism and Feminist Therapy: Counting Costs makes therapists more aware of their own class biases which assists them in providing more effective treatment that is sensitive to women's backgrounds. By helping therapists face important issues when their profession intersects with the values and experiences of working-class women, Classism and Feminist Therapy challenges the lack of attention given to issues of class in psychotherapy and serves as a step toward open conversation about the topic.Calling attention to the sociopolitical nature of therapy, contributors define some ways in which current therapeutic practices can become oppressive when class differences between client and therapist are ignored. In Classism and Feminist Therapy, therapists gain valuable insight about how class matters are played out in therapy. These insights are combined with guidelines as to how to engage in a less class-biased form of psychotherapy. To this end, contributors discuss: class-related biases and assumptions commonly held by therapists how to make psychotherapy more responsive to the needs of working-class and poor women the intersection of class, race, and gender and how this applies to therapy strengths and challenges for working-class, poor, and economically privileged women class and gender in a political and sociological context social-psychological dynamics of internalized classism and pathways to healing and self-recoveryThis engaging book alerts therapists to the failures and inadequacies of current approaches to class as an issue in psychological theory and psychotherapy. It discusses how the issue of class has been overshadowed by the assumptions that individuals and society make about it: that people are the class they deserve to be; that class is correlated with how hard one works or how smart one is; and that class is primarily a matter of income or owned assets rather than of access (both psychologically and practically) to resources. All therapists--psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors--of intermediate to advanced levels of knowledge and practice will find information in Classism and Feminist Therapy invaluable for confronting issues of class in their professional and personal interactions.

My Recollection of Chicago

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Leacock, Stephen / Spadoni, Carl, PUBLISHER: University of Toronto Press, Disillusioned by the General Drudgery of his Job, Stephen Leacock resigned from his teaching position at Upper Canada College in to pursue graduate studies. 'At Chicago, ' Leacock wrote wryly, 'they made a genial pretense that I was fit for the graduate school in economics. It is a little hard to see why, except that I was obviously not fit to die.' Leacock graduated from the university in . His dissertation, until now, was thought to be lost. Carl Spadoni's discovery of this thesis -- unread since its defense -- gives readers a unique opportunity to re-examine Leacock's philosophies. 'The Doctrine of Laissez Faire' reveals the early roots of his scepticism about political economy on which his later works of humour fed. In it, Leacock attempts to demystify the dogmatic opposition to state intervention based on this economic precept. In his introduction, Spadoni provides the historical background for an intellectual understanding of Leacock's thesis. The first part of this book is a short essay by Leacock in which he reminisces on his graduate years at Chicago. The second part consists of his newly unearthed thesis. Together, they provide a better understanding of one of the major figures of Canadian cultural theory.
