ZAVOLI Descrizione Il 25 luglio il Gran Consiglio del fascismo destituisce di fatto Benito Mussolini e il re Vittorio Emanuele III incarica il maresciallo d'Italia Pietro Badoglio di formare un nuovo governo. Il duce viene arrestato e trasferito in varie sedi per essere infine portato a Campo Imperatore, sul Gran Sasso, un luogo ritenuto inespugnabile. A torto: con una spettacolare incursione denominata "Operazione Quercia", infatti, un commando di paracadutisti tedeschi libera Mussolini il 12 settembre, dopo cinquanta giorni di prigionia. L'incalzante ricostruzione di Petacco e Zavoli dà conto di quelle convulse settimane: una sequela di eventi nei quali si rispecchia il dramma di un uomo, ma soprattutto di un intero paese.
