Notoriamente considerato il disco emblema del Glam Rock, questo album concept segna per l'appunto la nascita di una storica maschera: Ziggy Stardust, una caricatura aliena ed androgina del divo, destinato a essere idolatrato dal pubblico e stritolato dallo star-system. Musicalmente, l'album è una raccolta di ballate romantiche e di rock'n'roll elettrificati e tiratissimi, al limite del punk. Musica da suonare a tutto volume, come raccomanda il retro della copertina. Nelle undici tracce viene sfoderato tutto l'armamentario glam: dalle voci sguaiate ed effeminate alle chitarre affilate, dagli arrangiamenti pomposi d'archi alle melodie struggenti. Ma in tanto melodramma Bowie non si prende mai sul serio: le sue canzoni sono uno sberleffo alla morale bacchettona, un saggio di trasgressione ironica e, spesso, di puro nonsense.
