In Defense of Science: Why Scientific Literacy Matters

In Defense of Science: Why Scientific Literacy Matters

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Spellman, Frank R. / Price-Bayer, Joni, PUBLISHER: Government Institutes, Today, only a few people outside of the scientific community are conversant with the tradition of science and its many breakthroughs. The rest are scientifically illiterate. So say Frank R. Spellman and Joni Price-Bayer, authors of In Defense of Science: Why Scientific Literacy Matters. This book explains why ordinary citizens need to have an understanding of science, its methods, and its groundbreaking discoveries. The authors introduce the most basic scientific concepts in accessible and straightforward language. Along the way they debunk several misconceptions of science and scientists, and arrive at a view of science as an integral part of society, policy, and everyday life. The book begins with an introduction to science and its basic concepts, including a brief and entertaining history of science and scientific discoveries, before taking on current views of science in society. It surveys the many sources of our ideas of science, including pop culture, classics of literature, news media, and political discourse. Much of the information from these sources tends to mislead, and the only way to guard against such misinformation is to become scientifically literate, and promote scientific literacy in society. The book therefore delves into the reasons that so many people do not understand basic scientific principles and do not keep up with scientific breakthroughs, and finishes by examining the current state of science education. It includes many resources for further reading, and is presented in an engaging and entertaining way. It offers much food for thought for anyone concerned with science in today's world.

The Believing Primate: Scientific, Philosophical, and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Schloss, Jeffrey / Murray, Michael J., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Over the last two decades, scientific accounts of religion have received a great deal of scholarly and popular attention both because of their intrinsic interest and because they are widely as constituting a threat to the religion they analyse. The Believing Primate aims to describe and discuss these scientific accounts as well as to assess their implications. The volume begins with essays by leading scientists in the field, describing these accounts and discussing evidence in their favour. Philosophical and theological reflections on these accounts follow, offered by leading philosophers, theologians, and scientists. This diverse group of scholars address some fascinating underlying questions: Do scientific accounts of religion undermine the justification of religious belief? Do such accounts show religion to be an accidental by-product of our evolutionary development? And, whilst we seem naturally disposed toward religion, would we fare better or worse without it? Bringing together dissenting perspectives, this provocative collection will serve to freshly illuminate ongoing debate on these perennial questions.

Zenith respirator luxe af/p day date a.k.a. jfk-watch '70

For sale is my rare sophisticated Zenith Respirator Luxe AF/P (high frequency/ precison) Day Date Tank watch with box and warrently. The watch is all original and in perfect condintion with the vintage Zenith crown logo. This watch is timeless and sophisticated and very nice as a dress and sport watch due to the size of the square/ rectangular case around 37 x 37 cm. Please notice the geometry of the metallic dial that reflects light on four directions. Very nice! About this name, Respirator, it comes from the French "respirateur" and is based on the way this case is built. There is a large gasket between the glass and the case that "breathes", meaning that as much water pressure increases the case is compressed, increasing the water resistance. It's a 70's design. There are Respirators, marked with a "X" on the dial, that do not "breathes", meaning that they are Respirators only by the name. This great watch comes with the famous and rare movement Zenith (Movado) 405 AF/P with BPH of jewels and a power reserve of 40hrs. A very fast ticking! The watch has been serviced last year and runs perfect and very precise. I'm looking for EURO NETTO to me or a fair offer. I accept paypal and bank transfer and I ship worldwide. The watch is located in the Netherlands. If you need more info or photos, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks for looking.

With the coming of railroads, the nature of the Columbia as a free-flowing river changes as man attempts to control it by jetties at its tumultuous bar, by locks and canals at the cascades and Celilo Falls, and by dams providing power, navigation, irrigation, and flood control. These changes are not always welcomed by the Warren family, but because this is the watershed in which they have chosen to live, they must make the best of it. The climax of the novel, the massive flood of -- whose destructive crest cannot be controlled by the river's three existing dams -- gives the dam-builders the final argument they need to begin the era of engineering that eventually will bring the second largest watershed in the United States under man's control. By the time the process is completed fifty years later, the once free-flowing river will be impeded by 161 dams.

Excerpt:...I purposely talked to him as if he were a philosopher, or desired to be one. I should be glad if all the meadows on the earth were left in a wild state, if that were the consequence of men's beginning to redeem themselves. A man will not need to study history to find out what is best for his own culture. But alas the culture of an Irishman is an enterprise to be undertaken with a sort of moral bog hoe. I told him, that as he worked so hard at bogging, he required thick boots and stout clothing, which yet were soon soiled and worn out, but I wore light shoes and thin clothing, which cost not half so much, though he might think that I was dressed like a gentleman (which, however, was not the case), and in an hour or two, without labor, but as a recreation, I could, if I wished, catch as many fish as I should want for two days, or earn enough money to support me a week. If he and his family would live simply, they might all go a-huckleberrying in the summer for their amusement. John heaved a sigh at this, and his wife stared with arms a-kimbo, and both appeared to be wondering if they had capital enough to begin such a course with, or arithmetic enough to carry it through. It was sailing by dead reckoning to them, and they saw not clearly how to make their port so; therefore I suppose they still take life bravely, after their fashion, face to face, giving it tooth and nail, not having skill to split its massive columns with any fine entering wedge, and rout it in detail;--thinking to deal with it roughly, as one should handle a thistle. But they fight at an overwhelming disadvantage, --living, John Field, alas without arithmetic. and failing so. "Do you ever fish?" I asked. "Oh yes, I catch a mess now and then when I am lying by; good perch I...

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Reed, David / David Reed / Kaimowitz, David, PUBLISHER: Routledge, This book confronts the stark realities of how the economic and political reforms imposed in southern Africa have affected sectors based on agriculture, mining, tourism and forestry and what they have meant for the poor and the environment. It asks why the reforms evolved as they did, who has gained and who has lost. It shows that, with very few exceptions, the changes have benefited foreign companies and domestic elites, fostering corruption and monopolies and undermining civil society and political life. From this it explains what will have to be done by the international development and business communities to reverse these trends and stimulate the development of effective institutions for long-term, sustainable prosperity and social vitality.

The Myth of the Paperless Office

The Myth of the Paperless Office

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sellen, Abigail J. / Harper, Richard H. R., PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), IEEE-USAB Award for Distinguished Literary Contributions Furthering Engineering Professionalism Over the past thirty years, many people have proclaimed the imminent arrival of the paperless office. Yet even the World Wide Web, which allows almost any computer to read and display another computer's documents, has increased the amount of printing done. The use of e-mail in an organization causes an average 40 percent increase in paper consumption. In "The Myth of the Paperless Office," Abigail Sellen and Richard Harper use the study of paper as a way to understand the work that people do and the reasons they do it the way they do. Using the tools of ethnography and cognitive psychology, they look at paper use from the level of the individual up to that of organizational culture. Central to Sellen and Harper's investigation is the concept of "affordances"--the activities that an object allows, or affords. The physical properties of paper (its being thin, light, porous, opaque, and flexible) afford the human actions of grasping, carrying, folding, writing, and so on. The concept of affordance allows them to compare the affordances of paper with those of existing digital devices. They can then ask what kinds of devices or systems would make new kinds of activities possible or better support current activities. The authors argue that paper will continue to play an important role in office life. Rather than pursue the ideal of the paperless office, we should work toward a future in which paper and electronic document tools work in concert and organizational processes make optimal use of both.

England and Its Aesthetes: Biography and Taste

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ruskin, John / Carrier David / Carrier, David, PUBLISHER: Routledge, John Ruskin (), Walter Pater (), and Adrian Stokes () represent three generations of English aesthetes whose writings have transformed art history and the formations of museums as we know them. They are three great writers in a distinctively English tradition. Concerned with the nature of aesthetic experience, and with the interpretation of visual art, they offer approaches that are dramatically different, in challenging ways, from those of professional art historians. They published autobiographies, explaining the relationship of their conceptions of aesthetic experience to their critical thinking about social questions. With "England and Its Aesthetes," David Carrier has assembled the autobiographical sketches of these influential aesthetes. His "reading" reveals them to be less concerned with art appreciation or an aesthetic approach to everyday life than with issues of identity, politics, and desire. He unfolds their texts, revealing the complexity that lies be
