Redeeming the Time: A Political Theology of the Environment

Redeeming the Time: A Political Theology of the Environment

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Scharper, Stephenbede, PUBLISHER: Continuum, What is the proper role of the human in light of the ecological crisis? After a sympathetic and critical analysis of the principal answers to that question, Stephen Scharper argues that only a religious perspective -- viewing human agency as central to both the devastation and the reclamation of planetary life -- is viable. Such a perspective must include social, economic, cultural, as well as theological transformation in order to be effective in confronting threats to the ecosystem. Among the principal answers or "paradigms" assessed by this book are the new cosmology, ecofeminism, process thought, Gaia theory, and liberation theology. Each of these recognizes the role of the human in the present environmental crisis. But each of these also approaches the "human problematic" in incomplete or inadequate ways. Thus Redeeming the Time is both an examination of the state of the question, and a constructive effort at building bridges among the various current paradigms and remedying, or redeeming, their inadequacies.

Stains on My Name-C

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Williams, Brackette F. / Brackette F. Williams / Williams, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Burdened with a heritage of both Spanish and British colonization and imperialism, Guyana is today caught between its colonial past, its efforts to achieve the consciousness of nationhood, and the need of its diverse subgroups to maintain their own identity. "Stains on My Name, War in My Veins" chronicles the complex struggles of the citizens of Guyana to form a unified national culture against the pulls of ethnic, religious, and class identities. Drawing on oral histories and a close study of daily life in rural Guyana, Brackette E. Williams examines how and why individuals and groups in their quest for recognition as a "nation" reproduce ethnic chauvinism, racial stereotyping, and religious bigotry. By placing her ethnographic study in a broader historical context, the author develops a theoretical understanding of the relations among various dimensions of personal identity in the process of nation building.

Smith argues that morality depends on a proper understanding of the concept of values, and that values depend on the alternative of life or death. She proposes that human beings need to be moral in order to live, explaining how life is the standard of morality, how flourishing is the proper end and reward of living morally, and how an intelligent egoism is the path to flourishing.

Monopoly on Salvation?: A Feminist Approach to Religious

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fletcher, Jeannine Hill, PUBLISHER: Continuum, In a world where religion often fuels ethnic and racial conflicts, and where passionate allegiance to rival creeds engnders violent antagonism among members of the same family, dwellers in the same neighborhood, citizens of the same country, no one can doubt the need to rethink the universalist claims of temple, church, and mosque. For the past few decades, Christian theology tended to regard religious difference as a "problem" to be overcome. More recently there has been an effort, however tentative, to view the different religious traditions as rich legacies to be shared by the entire human community. Monopoloy on Salvation? Re-examines missionary history to provide examples of how Christians have engaged across religious boundaries in the past--among them, Paul's letters, the Acts of Thomas, the colonial encounters of Christopher Columbus and Bartolome de las Casas, the missionary engagements of Francis Xavier, Roberto DeNobili, and Matteo Ricci, and modern missions in Africa

City of Sacrifice: Violence from the Aztec Empire to the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Carrasco, David L., PUBLISHER: Beacon Press, At an excavation of the Great Aztec Temple in Mexico City, amid carvings of skulls and a dismembered warrior goddess, David Carrasco stood before a container filled with the decorated bones of infants and children. It was the site of a massive human sacrifice, and for Carrasco the center of fiercely provocative questions: If ritual violence against humans was a profound necessity for the Aztecs in their capital city, is it central to the construction of social order and the authority of city states? Is civilization built on violence? In City of Sacrifice, Carrasco chronicles the fascinating story of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, investigating Aztec religious practices and demonstrating that religious violence was integral to urbanization; the city itself was a temple to the gods. That Mexico City, the largest city on earth, was built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, is a point Carrasco poignantly considers in his comparison of urban life from antiquity to modernity. Majestic in scope, City of Sacrifice illuminates not only the rich history of a major Meso american city but also the inseparability of two passionate human impulses: urbanization and religious engagement. It has much to tell us about many familiar events in our own time, from suicide bombings in Tel Aviv to rape and murder in the Balkans.

Imagining the Impossible: Magical, Scientific, and Religious

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rosengren, Karl S. / Johnson, Carl N., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, The study of early cognitive development has emphasized the way in which young children act like scientists, testing and revising theories about the physical, biological, and psychological world. Evidence of this early understanding of the natural order has led researchers to reconsider children's thinking about magical, religious, or otherwise supernatural orders. The present volume offers reviews of new lines of research on children's thinking that stretch beyond the ordinary boundaries of reality. More than being "little scientists," children are here considered as "little magicians," "little metaphysicians," "little theologians" and "little story tellers" or "dramatists," imagining other-worldly possibilities.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Vargas-Ramos, Carlos / Stevens-Arroyo, Anthony M., PUBLISHER: Praeger, " Blessing" La Pol?tica" The Latino Religious Experience and Political Engagement in the United States" presents a corrective challenge to the authoritative conclusion by the book "Voice and Equality: Civic Voluntarism in American Politics" that Latinos are less likely to become involved in politics because of the predominant Catholic beliefs of this demographic. Through comprehensive analysis of the political tendencies of Latinos and Latinas of faith, the findings in this work consistently counterpoint those conclusions from a variety of perspectives and methodologies. The research presented in the book comprises surveys that are national in scope--both of elites, and at the mass level--as well as localized in cities. The authors have also collected ethnographies that are localized in U.S. cities and transnational in nature. The result is both a broad view of Latino politics and religion, and detailed information that provides far more context that is possible in national-level quantitative studies.

Race and the Third Reich: Linguistics, Racial Anthropology

Race and the Third Reich: Linguistics, Racial Anthropology

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hutton, Christopher M., PUBLISHER: Polity Press, Race and the Third Reich aims to set out the key concepts, debates and controversies that marked the academic study of race in Nazi Germany. It looks in particular at the discipline of racial anthropology and its relationship to linguistics and human biology. Christopher Hutton identifies the central figures involved in the study of race during the Nazi regime, and traces continuities and discontinuities between Nazism and the study of human diversity in the Western tradition. Whilst Nazi race theory is commonly associated with the idea of a superior "Aryan race" and with the idealization of the Nordic ideal of blond hair, blue eyes and a "long-skull," Nazi race theorists, in common with their colleagues outside Germany, without exception denied the existence of an Aryan race. After official publications were at pains to stress that the term "Aryan" belonged to linguistics and was not a racial category at all. Under the influence of Mendelian genetics, racial anthropologists concluded that there was no necessary link between ideal physical appearance and ideal racial character. In the course of the Third Reich, racial anthropology was marginalized in favour of the rising science of human genetics. However, racial anthropologists played a key role in the crimes of the Nazi state by defining Jews and others as racial outsiders to be excluded at all costs from the body of the German Volk. Anyone studying the Third Reich or who is interested in race theory will find this a fascinating, informative and accessible study.

Islam, Politics, and Social Movements

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Burke, Edmund, III / Lapidus, Ira M. / Abrahamian, Ervand, PUBLISHER: University of California Press, Taken together the essays in this work not only provide new research essential to the study of Islamic societies and Muslim peoples, but also set a new standard for the concrete study of local situations and illuminate the forces shaping the history of modern Muslim societies. This collection is unique in its sophisticated interpretation of the social protest and political resistance movements in Muslim countries during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The contributors take two principal approaches to the study of their subject. Utilizing "new cultural history," they explore how particular movements have deployed the cultural and religious resources of Islam to mobilize and legitimize insurgent political action. Others rely on "new social history" to study the economic, political, and social contexts in which movements of anti-colonial resistance and revolution have developed. This work brings together contributions from specialists on Islamic North Africa, Egypt, the Arab fertile crescent, Iran and India.

The European Union and the Council of Europe

The European Union and the Council of Europe

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kolb, Marina, PUBLISHER: Palgrave Macmillan, With the increasing prominence of fundamental rights within the EU it increasingly interferes in the core competence of the Council of Europe. This book traces the EU and the Council of Europe relationship in the field of human rights - marked by mutual interferences and overlap - and explores which factors trigger cooperation or conflict between the two organizations. Investigating the cases of data protection, the fight against terrorism, challenging Roma discrimination, the Memorandum of Understanding and the Fundamental Rights Agency through the lens of an implementation literature and management studies-perspective, this book contends that the biggest threat to interorganizational cooperation is organizational self-interest, despite a shared policy outlook. The book furthers the agenda set by the literature in this field by providing a new theoretical framework and an in-depth empirical study of two main actors in the field of human rights protection in Europe from a political science perspective.
