Age or Need?: Public Policies for Older People

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Neugarten, Bernice L. / Neugarten, Bernice Levin, PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), Should benefits for older people be based on age or need? Do programmes that serve only older people people deflect resources that should go to other people? Some of the contributors to this volume argue that social service programmes should be based on need, rather than defined groups of people. Apart from anything else, age-based programmes confirm negative stereotypes of older people, and lump them into an undifferentiated group. But would the reform of social services along these lines jeopardize the recent progress made in the condition of older people? New thoughts and new information are provided in support of both arguments. Goodchild develops arguments from Nietzsche, Adorno and Horkheimer to suggests that our love of Western modernity is an expression of a piety and that it has become a global religion in practice, if not always in belief. He condemns modernity, presenting a philosophical alternative that demands attention from philosophers, critical theorists, philosophers of religion, theologians and those in ecological politics.

What Is Sociology

What Is Sociology

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Elias, Norbert, PUBLISHER: Columbia University Press, "What is Sociology?" presents in concise and provocative form the major ideas of a seminal thinker whose work -- spanning more than four decades -- is only now gaining the recognition here it has long had in Germany and France. Unlike other post-war sociologists, Norbert Elias has always held the concept of historical development among his central concerns; his dynamic theories of the evolution of modern man have remedied the historical and epistemological shortcomings of structualism and ethno-methodology. "What is Sociology?" refines the arguments that were first found in Elias' massive work on the civilizing process, in which he formulated his major assertions about the interdependence of the making of modern man and modern society. It is Elias' contention that changes in personality structure -- embodied in phenomena ranging from table manners and hygiene habits to rites of punishment and courtly love -- inevitably reflect and mould patterns of control generated by new political and social instututions. Elias' rejection of a dichotomy between individual and society, and his use of psychoanalysis, political theory, and social history, help restore a fullness of resource to sociology.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: O'Donnell, Arthur J., PUBLISHER: iUniverse, "It's like being in a small town right in the middle of a big city. People belong to their neighborhood first, and that neighborhood belongs to the city." -- Karen Boyle, Seattle neighborhood activist. Seattle, Washington, has earned a national reputation as a "City of Neighborhoods" and a place where citizens take an active role in finding solutions to the problems of urban life. The efforts of Seattle's neighborhood-based councils and not-for-profit organizations were also seen as part of a national "neighborhood movement" that achieved prominence in the s and s. Originally completed in as a series of radio programs exploring the history and directions of the neighborhood movement, "In the City of Neighborhoods" was written and produced by award-winning journalist Arthur J. O'Donnell. The series also highlighted economic survival skills for non-profit organizations during an era of budget constraints. In this edition of "In the City of Neighborhoods," O'Donnell augments his exploration of neighborhood activism with later articles covering the Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY) syndrome. This special section, called "It's My Backyard, Too," provides insights into the arguments and tactics of those who oppose power plants, transmission lines and other energy developments.

More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun-Control

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lott, John R., Jr., PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, On its initial publication in , John R. Lott's "More Guns, Less Crime" drew both lavish praise and heated criticism. More than a decade later, it continues to play a key role in ongoing arguments over gun-control laws: despite all the attacks by gun-control advocates, no one has ever been able to refute Lott's simple, startling conclusion that more guns mean less crime. Relying on the most rigorously comprehensive data analysis ever conducted on crime statistics and right-to-carry laws, the book directly challenges common perceptions about the relationship of guns, crime, and violence. For this third edition, Lott draws on an additional ten years of data--including provocative analysis of the effects of gun bans in Chicago and Washington, D.C--that brings the book fully up to date and further bolsters its central contention.

Ligeti, Kurt G, and Hungarian Music During the Cold War

Ligeti, Kurt G, and Hungarian Music During the Cold War

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Beckles Willson, Rachel, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Drawing on key elements from musical thought in inter-war Hungary, this book provides a unique perspective on the nation's musical heritage both inside and outside Hungary's borders during the Cold War. Although Ligeti became part of the Western avant-garde after he left Hungary in , archival sources illuminate his ongoing contact with Hungarian musicians, and their shifting perspective on his work. Kurt g's music was more obviously involved with Hungarian traditions, was entangled with the Soviet occupation, and was a contributing part of the city's diverse musical culture. However, from the mid-s onwards, critics identified his music as an artistic and moral 'truth' distinct from the broader musical life of Budapest: it was an idealized symbol of life beyond the everyday in Hungary. Grounding her interpretations of works in these complex political circumstances, Beckles Willson is nonetheless sympathetic to arguments by Ligeti, Kurt g and Budapest music critics that their music might have a life beyond nationalist and Cold War ideology.

Roots of North Indian Shi'ism in Iran and Iraq: Religion and

Roots of North Indian Shi'ism in Iran and Iraq: Religion and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cole, Juan / Cole, J. R. I., PUBLISHER: University of California Press, In this pioneering study of the Twelver Shi'i branch of Islam prevalent in Iraq and Iran, J. R. I. Cole traces the influence of Shi'i rule on the development of religious communalism and conflict in the North Indian State of Awadh (Oudh). He also examines the relationship of the Shi'i clergy to the state and the clerical reaction to British imperialism and capitalism. Based on research in rare manuscripts and in archives, the book reveals that the Shi'i clergy advocated policies that caused resentment among Sunnis and Hindus, thereby promoting religious communalism and setting the stage for modern communal conflict. The Shi'i learned men took government posts in support of Awadh's Shi'i nawabs and shahs; Awadh state support, in turn, helped transform Shi'ism from a persecuted "sect" to a dominant, if still minority, religious establishment. Sociologically, the book draws attention to the specific role of the state in defining "sect" and "church." It also argues the importance of class divisions within the Shi'i community, showing that the dominant clerical ideology was often not accepted by the laboring strata. Cole's study supports the view that Muslim communalism in Northern India had genuine historical roots and was not simply an elite strategy of modern Muslim politicians. Contrary to the arguments of some writers and to the image projected by Iran's current ayatullahs, he claims that most Shi'i clergy did not play a role of opposition to the state.

Arguing the Just War in Islam

Arguing the Just War in Islam

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kelsay, John, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, Jihad, with its many terrifying associations, is a term widely used today, though its meaning is poorly grasped. Few people understand the circumstances requiring a jihad, or "holy" war, or how Islamic militants justify their violent actions within the framework of the religious tradition of Islam. How Islam, with more than one billion followers, interprets jihad and establishes its precepts has become a critical issue for both the Muslim and the non-Muslim world. John Kelsay's timely and important work focuses on jihad of the sword in Islamic thought, history, and culture. Making use of original sources, Kelsay delves into the tradition of shari'a--Islamic jurisprudence and reasoning--and shows how it defines jihad as the Islamic analogue of the Western "just" war. He traces the arguments of thinkers over the centuries who have debated the legitimacy of war through appeals to shari'a reasoning. He brings us up to the present and demonstrates how contemporary Muslims across the political spectrum continue this quest for a realistic ethics of war within the Islamic tradition. "Arguing the Just War in Islam" provides a systematic account of how Islam's central texts interpret jihad, guiding us through the historical precedents and Qur'anic sources upon which today's claims to doctrinal truth and legitimate authority are made. In illuminating the broad spectrum of Islam's moral considerations of the just war, Kelsay helps Muslims and non-Muslims alike make sense of the possibilities for future war and peace. Acquista Ora

Wings of Judgment: American Bombing in World War II

Wings of Judgment: American Bombing in World War II

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Schaffer, Ronald, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, World War II--"the good war"--is here viewed from a new angle of vision, one that sheds fresh light on how major decisions were reached. More than just a book on the strategy and outcome of American bombing in World War II, Wings of Judgment tells about choices in war, decisions that determined whether hundreds of thousands of people lived or died and whether famous cities and great monuments of civilization survived or were destroyed. It is about the bombing of Dresden and Berlin and of dozens of cities and towns all over Germany and about the preservation of Rome and Florence. It is about the incineration of Tokyo, the bombing of Hiroshima, and the sparing of one of Japan's most beautiful and holy places, the city of Kyoto. Describing U.S. air raids that terrified inhabitants of enemy nations and citizens of enemy-occupied countries, it raises serious questions about the military and moral effects of American bombing. It also tells of American efforts to avoid killing civilians needlessly. Taking us behind the scenes at military headquarters, Schaffer shows that even the toughest warriors occasionally found themselves offering moral arguments for their actions, arguing that they were made right by enemy atrocities, by the justness of the Allied cause, and by the numbers of lives of American servicemen that Allied bombing might save.
